“Loneliness Kills. It’s As Powerful As Smoking Or Alcoholism.”

Don't be a lone wolf, chasing after money, status, and one night stands... If you want to be happiest and healthiest you can be as you age.

Invest in creating and maintaining positive relationships (as well as exercise, and clean eating).

“When the study began, nobody cared about empathy or attachment. But the key to healthy aging is relationships, relationships, relationships.”— George Vaillant

"Vaillant wrote that six factors predicted healthy aging for the Harvard men:physical activity, absence of alcohol abuse and smoking, having mature mechanisms to cope with life’s ups and downs, and enjoying both a healthy weight and a stable marriage.For the inner-city men, education was an additional factor. “The more education the inner city men obtained,” wrote Vaillant, “the more likely they were to stop smoking, eat sensibly, and use alcohol in moderation.”"

The study showed that the role of genetics and long-lived ancestors proved less important to longevity than the level of satisfaction with relationships in midlife, now recognized as a good predictor of healthy aging. The research also debunked the idea that people’s personalities “set like plaster” by age 30 and cannot be changed.

“Those who were clearly train wrecks when they were in their 20s or 25s turned out to be wonderful octogenarians,” he said. “On the other hand, alcoholism and major depression could take people who started life as stars and leave them at the end of their lives as train wrecks.”

"Asked what lessons he has learned from the study, Waldinger, who is a Zen priest, said he practices meditation daily and invests time and energy in his relationships, more than before.

“It’s easy to get isolated, to get caught up in work and not remembering, ‘Oh, I haven’t seen these friends in a long time,’ ” Waldinger said. “So I try to pay more attention to my relationships than I used to.”"

Thats true man. Loneliness is a serious issue and can fuk you up mentally. I took some people for granted in the past, never bothered calling them out and talking to them, now most of them are gone and some days it feels lonely and depressing. and i have no one to blame by myself

luckily i still have 2 or 3 really close friends, and thats all you need really, a few good friends. if i lost them i wouldnt know what to do

I agree.

I now have 2 friends who I speak to regularly (they don't live in my city), but there was a period when I had none. It was phuckin hard, and it's very easy to become bitter/jaded by life when you don't have positive relationships.

I don't think we can be health in psychological isolation, we need appreciative and empathetic social connections.

What I used to forget to do, like you, was simply maintaining contact.

I've truly never felt a hint of "loneliness". If you are just the type of person who isn't lonely, is it OK to go about your life mostly alone?

I have a gf but don't want to ever move in together with her. I like being able to go be alone 100% of the time.

It's about having the choice, as long as you have the ability to connect with a close friend whenever you want then preferring to be alone is okay. Most though aren't lonely by choice, it tends to be because of low self-esteem, poor social skills or mental illness. The longer it goes on the more and more difficult it gets to form close relationships.

You can have a million people and be in a relationship and be completely alone too.

And, I have a friend who is an introvert and I don't think he is lonely because he's just one of those that will never be married or live with a woman. But since he has became ill and can't do his normal things I do worry about suicide.

Being truely lonely doesn't kill you, but it makes you wish you were dead... and your body listens when your brain starts to give up and it grants you that wish

Same reason placebo is important in hospitals, and why people with cancer have to 'fight' and stay positive through their treatment. The minute their spirit is broken their body starts to succumb too

The part where they said genetics is less important is total bull****. Genetics are the most important thing bar none. Some people can drink, smoke, be fat as hell and live until 90 and other people can live healthy their whole life and drop dead at 60.

When you are born your genetics have already decided how long you will live (barring a car accident or whatever). If you live healthy you can extand your genetic age by a couple of years max, or lower it a couple of years by living poorly. But 95 % is decided by genetics

I was alone for many years until I found someone to connect with.

It's tough for me to connect to people who are in undated with the mundane and can't see the bigger picture.

I think you can survive alone. In fact, some people can use a healthy dose of solitude to bring them to reality. Long-term loneliness is unfulfilling and miserable if you let it get to you.

I countered loneliness with extreme business. Idle mind will play tricks on you and remind you of what you're lacking socially.
Thus let me live, unseen, unknown;
Thus unlamented let me die;
Steal from the world, and not a stone
Tell where I lie.
