This. I've still got my collection in a box somewhere from when I was a kid. Ain't worth Jack now, the bottom fell out.

When I was a kid, my uncle literally paid for college through sports cards as it was much bigger then. Hed buy thousand count boxes wholesale. He would go through each one with a Becketts card value magazine and find the ones worth any money, usually about 100-200 out of every box. He would take those to a sports shop and make about 5x what he paid for the box. He did this multiple times a month and never had to work a job while he was in school. Those cards paid for his entire education through his master's and he made enough for some spending money on the side.

Bonus for my brother and I was that he would always give us first dibs on the remaining cards before he would get rid of them. I had a collection that was the envy of my friends and never had to spend any money buying cards.

yeah, you know its a bubble when the same cards are ranging from $5 to $100,000. if it was real value, all shadowless charizards would be at least $5k right now.

ima say some rich dude just threw money out to get the #1 card and paid 100k for it.

A card that rare could sell for 3-4x that in auction. There are enough rich as fuk nerds who would pay ridiculous amounts of money for a holy grail of the nerd world like that

im just saying you can get a shadowless original for like $5. regardless of grading, you know the chit is a bubble when the same card is changing from $5 to $100k cuz the grading. once it gets to that point you know its just 1 dude who threw money out to get the best one. the value is not legitimate.

yeah someone gets paid good money, but that value is subjective big time and big bubble.

The first Illustrator card sold in 2000 for ~$20,000 and one sold last year in 2016 for ~$54,000. The value of these cards is not something that is "new".

Here's a Honus Wagner baseball card, the best condition one in the world, and it is only a 5, which is obviously no where near a gem mint 10. Yet this one sold for $3 million. This card has only increased in value since 1933, I wonder when this bubble is going to burst? You can say the value and condition are meaningless but as long as people are willing to pay money based on rarity and condition, there will always be a market and they can be solid investments.

Again, you are talking out of your ass. The value of this card is not going from "$5 to $100,000"; its peak value right now is $20,000. Your point about it being "regardless of grading" doesn't disprove its value as collecting ANYTHING is almost entirely dependent on its condition. People collect old things for the condition they are in, and this is what drives the value of specimens that are in "pristine condition". I don't know anything about old cars, but just because your grandpa has some beat-to-**** model of an super rare old Mustang, it doesn't mean that the same car in pristine condition isn't worth millions.

There's no way it's worth that much. I have that exact same Charizard card. I've owned it since it came out and it's the only one I've ever owned.

Is it PSA rated a 10? Is it a 1st edition? Is it the english version?

If yes to all 3, chuck it on ebay for 20k and see how you go.

If No to any, it is not the exact same card.

Yours is the Unlimited version (ie: not 1st Edition and therefore not ultra rare) which makes it worth only a handful of dollars. PSA is a card grading service which authenticates the validity and grades cards based on condition. Obviously, the better condition a card is in, the higher its value will sit. Only a PSA 10 1st Edition Shadowless Base Set Charizard is worth thousands.

Means you sent the card in to PSA to be professionally graded based on condition. Your card could be anyway from 5-8, hard to tell. But highly unlikely it's a 9 and even less likely it's in perfect 10 condition.

On top of that, it is unlimited, meaning it's not 1st edition, which makes its value at somewhere from 30-100$.

Here's a 1st edition example. Notice the "1st edition" stamp, and the shadowless border around the frame of the picture. It's also been rated by PSA. This one sells for around 20k.

The sports card market crashed so hard that it's not even funny. I'm just glad I collected mtg and Pokémon as well which made me feel better about my sports card collection.

That's how collectibles work brah. The high price is due to rarity. If there are many of a certain item in circulation but very few in good condition then obviously the ones in good condition will be valued much higher. Even if the legitimacy of the grading is hokey at the higher levels it's still not much different than sports cards or stamps. Same chit goes on in those markets, just to a lesser degree since they are well established.

I do agree that the first thing that comes into my mind is that unlike coins, guns, cars, etc. pokemon cards have no intrinsic value. At least with something like coins you can collect pieces with low premium relative to their overall value and maintain much of what you invested in the collection should premium values drop for whatever reason.

I still have the original 150 + mew. The case is old as hell and a few fell out but I assume I can get replacements pretty easily. Would all 150 in pretty good condition be worth anything?

Why you brahs think Pokemon hasn't lost its value since we were kids? I still have a lot in the attic, I liked to collect first editions and PROMOS, spent thousands on eBay when it first came out, as an investment. lol.

Pokemon go might have made it popular again, but I doubt I can sell most of these cards for more then $20-30 at most and a lot of time auction it off.

The most valuable Pokemon card is the rare promotional Pokemon Illustrator card of which only 39 were produced with an unknown number still actually in tact in the marketplace. I might be talking out of my ass, but I think one of those sold for $50,000.

Cannot believe this guy spent 20k on a phucking piece of paper I get it, it's rare. That's cool. I lol'd when he said it was an asset. That made me question his intelligence claims he is a lawyer but is dumb enough to spend 20k on this chit and think that it's an asset.

Could've used that 20k as downpayment on a plot of land or a rental property could've used 20k to start a business, Nope. Used 20k to buy what he referees to as an "asset" about as autistic as it gets

These ARE assets. There are only ~100 PSA 10 copies of this card in existence, and since you are looking at something that has been out of print for ~20 years now, its not like there is a reserve of these things sitting around somewhere. Most of these cards were played with by kids, so even if you did have a 1st Edition Charizard sitting around somewhere in your basement, it isn't likely to be in Gem Mint condition. Factors like the iconic nature of this card, the artwork, and the general popularity of the Pokemon itself will keep this specific card in high demand forever (ie: its not likely that all of a sudden the base set Charizard becomes an unpopular card).

The value of this card has been steadily increasing for ~10 years now. That doesn't mean that it is guaranteed to become worth hundreds of thousands one day, but it doesn't disprove its status as something worth holding onto either. The collectible nature of Pokemon cards is only increasing, and as cards start selling for these prices more regularly (tens of thousands) you will see increase in involvement from higher end collectors who aren't just "Pokemon fans" but people who dabble in sports cards, etc. as a serious hobby. Regular people get too caught up on what THEY think these things are worth when really this is irrelevant. All you need to know is that ~5-10 years from now the person who goes and purchases this card (PSA 10 1st Edition Charizard) will be some dealer or uber collector with millions of dollars, which is why these things are "assets".

Old sports cards have value the new age ones will never have real value.
