When I was a kid, my uncle literally paid for college through sports cards as it was much bigger then. Hed buy thousand count boxes wholesale. He would go through each one with a Becketts card value magazine and find the ones worth any money, usually about 100-200 out of every box. He would take those to a sports shop and make about 5x what he paid for the box. He did this multiple times a month and never had to work a job while he was in school. Those cards paid for his entire education through his master's and he made enough for some spending money on the side.
Bonus for my brother and I was that he would always give us first dibs on the remaining cards before he would get rid of them. I had a collection that was the envy of my friends and never had to spend any money buying cards.

The first Illustrator card sold in 2000 for ~$20,000 and one sold last year in 2016 for ~$54,000. The value of these cards is not something that is "new".

Here's a Honus Wagner baseball card, the best condition one in the world, and it is only a 5, which is obviously no where near a gem mint 10. Yet this one sold for $3 million. This card has only increased in value since 1933, I wonder when this bubble is going to burst? You can say the value and condition are meaningless but as long as people are willing to pay money based on rarity and condition, there will always be a market and they can be solid investments.

There's no way it's worth that much. I have that exact same Charizard card. I've owned it since it came out and it's the only one I've ever owned.

If yes to all 3, chuck it on ebay for 20k and see how you go.
If No to any, it is not the exact same card.

On top of that, it is unlimited, meaning it's not 1st edition, which makes its value at somewhere from 30-100$.

Here's a 1st edition example. Notice the "1st edition" stamp, and the shadowless border around the frame of the picture. It's also been rated by PSA. This one sells for around 20k.

I do agree that the first thing that comes into my mind is that unlike coins, guns, cars, etc. pokemon cards have no intrinsic value. At least with something like coins you can collect pieces with low premium relative to their overall value and maintain much of what you invested in the collection should premium values drop for whatever reason.

I still have the original 150 + mew. The case is old as hell and a few fell out but I assume I can get replacements pretty easily. Would all 150 in pretty good condition be worth anything?
Edit: Took inventory: I'm missing Globat and Venomoth
1st editions: nidoqueen, wigglytuff, jigglypuf, venonat, poliwag/poliworl, machamp, weepinbell, victrebell, seaking eevee, vaporeon

Why you brahs think Pokemon hasn't lost its value since we were kids? I still have a lot in the attic, I liked to collect first editions and PROMOS, spent thousands on eBay when it first came out, as an investment. lol.
Pokemon go might have made it popular again, but I doubt I can sell most of these cards for more then $20-30 at most and a lot of time auction it off.

The most valuable Pokemon card is the rare promotional Pokemon Illustrator card of which only 39 were produced with an unknown number still actually in tact in the marketplace. I might be talking out of my ass, but I think one of those sold for $50,000.

Most of these cards were played with by kids, so even if you did have a 1st Edition Charizard sitting around somewhere in your basement, it isn't likely to be in Gem Mint condition. The value of this card has been steadily increasing for ~10 years now. That doesn't mean that it is guaranteed to become worth hundreds of thousands one day, but it doesn't disprove its status as something worth holding onto either. The collectible nature of Pokemon cards is only increasing, and as cards start selling for these prices more regularly (tens of thousands) you will see increase in involvement from higher end collectors who aren't just "Pokemon fans" but people who dabble in sports cards, etc. as a serious hobby. Regular people get too caught up on what THEY think these things are worth when really this is irrelevant. All you need to know is that ~5-10 years from now the person who goes and purchases this card (PSA 10 1st Edition Charizard) will be some dealer or uber collector with millions of dollars, which is why these things are "assets".
