Found out two of my coworkers are racist and homophobic

Today, when me and two other co workers were alone, away from supervision, one of them started to play some rap music as we were doing some reorganizing of supplies. One of them, who has made racist comments in the past, said he doesn't like "black people music". He's made lots of comments about black people in a joking way, but it's gotten to the point where it's pretty obvious he's racist to some extent towards black people. He has diffused this before by saying his wife is half black, which she is, but it's obvious he has some dislike towards black people.

They then started going on about how they're so glad Trump banned transgendered people from the military. They then followed that up with how much they hate gay people, how gay and trans people are mentally ill and we shouldn't accept them because they can't accept themselves, and finally they started saying they should all be offed.

When they asked me what my thoughts were because I remained quiet the entire time, I said I don't think transgendered people should be in the military right now because implementing that into the military would be too much work at this time but I'm not homophobic or transphobic. They were shocked with my response.

While I don't have any major issues with either of these guys, I think people who are so outwardly open about being racist or homophobic are pretty odd. Honestly even a little disgusting.

People (typically) act that way in certain environments if they feel they won't be challenged about it. If everyone else just nods along with their comments, why would they change what they are saying...?

P.S. You are posting this on the Misc. Lol.

I was suspicious about a coworker being racist one time. He didn't want to work with any black customers and then one day he started making comments about our manager who was black in front of other coworkers. I called him on it by just saying, "Well that was racist." He then made some comment about me being Hispanic and that I'm lucky I'm not lazy and walked away.

I brushed it off but he never said anything racist in front of me again. I would just pick your battles. If something is extremely out of line maybe say something. Other than that, brush off the small stuff and let them live in their ignorance. It's kinda of inappropriate for them to be bringing those topics up at work imo.

Reminds me of something I read once. From a religious leader in Nazi Germany. Think about it.

"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak"
"Johan tells me that your luggage, is the luggage of the poor."

"The will to survive is not as important as the will to prevail... the answer to criminal aggression is retaliation." - Col. Jeff Cooper USMC Ret.

In to say this. In to see epic thread backfire as OP complains about racism & homophobia he did nothing to stop to a site he frequently posts on that's teeming with racists & homophobes. Leaving satisfied.

Strong understanding of the military. I legitimately don't think there is anything wrong with people being racist/sexist. It's a stupid opinion but as long as you're not acting on it then I don't really care. The idea that it's grounds for social exile is pretty stupid, IMO.

And are you one of those people who "pretend to be nice and accepting"? lol @ calling me a liberal. If my post angered you, that speaks more about you than it does about me.

I have more respect for people who admit to themselves they're racists and homophobic rather than people who make all kinds of comments hinting they are and then when you call them out for it, they shut down or get angry because it makes them self reflect.

Same lol. I did vote for Trump but I was in FL so...swing state. Wasn't proud of it though. Not being left and not being racist shouldn't be mutually exclusive.

Discussing black or gay political issues is fine. You don't have to be in agreeance of any particular type of people or belief. There is a difference between that and something that borders on hate.

That's funny OP because today, when me and two other co workers were alone, away from supervision, one of them started to play some Radiohead as we were doing some reorganizing of supplies. One of them, who has made racist comments in the past, said he doesn't like "white people music". He's made lots of comments about white people in a joking way, but it's gotten to the point where it's pretty obvious he's racist to some extent towards white people. He has diffused this before by saying he's white.

They then started going on about how they're so outraged Trump banned transgendered people from the military. They then followed that up with how much they love and accept gay people, how gay and trans people are not mentally ill and we should accept them because they're so brave.

When they asked me what my thoughts were because I remained quiet the entire time, I said I don't think transgendered people should be in the military. They were shocked with my response and I got fired shortly afterwards, all my social media was suspended by the time I got home and I found a $500 fine for hate speech in my mailbox.

While I don't have any major issues with either of these guys, I think people who are so outwardly open about being racist are pretty odd. Honestly even a little disgusting.

LOL of course not.

First we have to define "acting on it" because I do think there's a problem.

The problem is whoever their racism is directed at is in the very least starting out at some sort of disadvantage with them for being themselves.

Of course this might not lead to being hung from a tree, but it still gets annoying just picking up on the subtleties of their disdain.

Hell how many guys here have that same complaint regarding women, simply cause they're men, apply that same logic except instead of gender use race.
