Was in Liverpool last week and I'll say this.. the square half mile round the docks was ok. I mean, nothing that every single provincial city in England has, and I certainly wouldn't leave my car there, but it was.. ok

However, 500 yards up the road in any direction.. what an absolute pile. It's a bargain booze or charity shop on every corner. Anything else is boarded up. Would not live in/10

This man sees sense. London has the best attractions/restaurants/clubs/landmarks in the UK. And this is only within 4 square miles, I can walk from Buckingham Palace to Hyde Park to Oxford Street to Southbank to London Bridge easily without thought in 1 day.

Can't say Opie is wrong. I went to London several times and I always stayed in Knightsbridge, Picadilly and Kensington.Everytime I stepped a foot out of those I thought I was in a thirld-world country.

Paris is the same to be faire : If you step a foot outside of Montmartre, Champs-Elysées,16ème arrondissement Louvre et Saint-Germain des Prés : Welcome to Africa and by Africa I mean a fukkin african slum and not cities like Casablanca.

People come to London, see the obvious tourist stuff miss the best the city has to offer. It is really big, really varied (due to the way it was formed) and rather eclectic. Most of the nice places and often in zone 2. I grew up 20min fast train from central London and still rely on friends there to show me and take me to cool stuff I'd never have found.

You do have to realise it is a very old european city and therefore grit is part of what it is and it's character. You also have to get your head around fact one road can be a chithole and the next can be a nice area.

Check Peter Ackroyds book, think it's regarded as pretty definitive on London. Was reading another one based on the time Dickens was writing, see if I can find it..
