here we go blaming baby boomers again...

You know some of what you say maybe was true for a certain % of the population but not every baby boomer had it as easy as you think they did. You act as if everyone was living in huge houses and living the GOAT life but in reality most baby boomers were poor and got in debt and lived paycheck to paycheck.

I interview a lot of kids coming out of college and about half of them think they should be given a managerial job right away. Most of them don't want to climb the corporate ladder.

But hey lets blame them because we live in a society that needs to blame someone else!!!

but these jobs seem far and few in between. remember an old high school teacher telling me back in the day, you would graduate high school on the Friday and have gainful employment on Monday.
That kind of gig is few and far between, but solid blue collar work is still out there. Look up Mike Rowe's podcast/writings, he talks about it all the time there are employers out there that cannot fill those jobs. There is a shop around the corner from my house - they've had a sign up looking for a welder with 2 years experience (or a tech degree) and are paying $30/hr with benefits. They've been looking for over a year.

It definitely is a different time - the whole graduate and get a job thing was the result of towns being built to support a plant and that doesn't exist as much as we have shifted in society from manufacturing to support. So yea, you may have to move to get a job in the area that you want, but back in the day that was the case for the kids that wanted to a white collar job. Thirty years ago if you wanted to work in finance, you had to move to NYC.

That was the problem my last employer had. Recent grads showed up for entry level jobs and wanted more responsibility, that's something you have to earn. So now instead of hiring recent college grads, they are hiring people 25-29 year olds with high school diplomas and a few years of experience.

You guys can thank Obama.

Entry level jobs got increasingly filled with illegal immigrants and outsourced labor under Hussein's regime.

We're starting to reverse it but it's going to take a long time to undo his mess.

You're both right but purchasing power has gone down while common BS markers of making it 'Houses' and other BS have gone up.

Man you could pay off school in the early 80s with nothing more than a PT job.

i don't blame them for what has become of the economy. but they shouldn't rag on millenials for the difficulties of the current era. sure some of us are definitely fairies and bronies who are delusional

but the fact that the landscape has changed is undeniable.

wages, at least in the US, haven't budged for several decades. inb4 everyone should become an engineer optometrist who moonlights as a space explorer to simply make ends meet.

This. It's a little bit of a two way street. So many professors of these curriculums have zero experience outside of academia.

And like I said previously in the thread, I'd like to see the stats for the, let's say, 27 and under crowd in every decade going back 60 years. I bet the unemployment stats are basically the same for this age group.

Even previously safe professions like Optometry and Pharmacy are now seeing difficulties with job hirings. Heck, Im a newly graduated physical therapist and ive been having trouble getting a job out of school too.

The simple fact is, even with the economy doing good, our productivity is so high for the jobs being done that business doesnt need the entire workforce to meet the demands anymore. Low skilled jobs can be done by immigrants and high schoolers and dont pay enough to support real working adults. High skilled jobs are available to those who either have the networking or experience. It still leaves a large chunk of "skilled" or "educated" individuals working jobs "beneath" them

The womens studies/Race studies scapegoat is a very small minority of college grads. Most people who graduate colllege dont have degrees in those things, and still cant get jobs. Degrees like communications, film, architecture, business mangement, facilities management, etc are the degrees now that are having a hard time.

Im not sure what the solution is, but the economy cannot sustain a large portion of the adult workforce out of work...

"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. Jobs are there we just spent 8 Obama years bringing in cheap labor from south america or outsourced to cheap labor in India so we didn't have to pay our youth to do jobs.

You do realise that a college degree is the new hs diploma? You need one for the majority of entry level jobs

That's because anyone with 2 years welding experience is already doing it somewhere else for that much money or more.

That's a huge issue with the job market now. Every company wants you to be trained, ready to hit the ground running, and they want someone else to have paid for it. Companies should take the initiative to train people or give them apprenticeships with no previous experience and then they could fill the jobs they need, like they used to do.

As many above have said, this is what happens when you pick a crap degree.
I graduated with my second degree (EE) in December 2015 and had a job before I graduated making good money.
Crap choices equal crap life including focusing on partying in college rather than obtaining a desired degree.

BTW the department of labor under Obama changed the way they counted unemployment so that the numbers would look much better, and they now only count people on unemployment benefits and they don't count underemployed or those who gave up looking. It was likely worse than depression era numbers IMO

You are right. No one wants to be a tradie, truck driver, janitor, etc. Immigrants take those, rack up overtime, and buy houses in the suburbs, get their kids thru college, and retire in a mansion with cash in their homeland while lolling at the part time barista with 250k in college debt.
Everyone wants an instagram friendly job that doesnt require work, stress, and waking up early.

I just responded to your other thread OP. Some of you guys are way off. Blaming Millennials for things that they played no part in is ridiculous.

The reality is that poor trade policies and mass immigration has crushed the labor market for Millennials. Absolutely destroyed it.

When my father was a young man with very little education and located in a major city (top five pop. wise) he was able to easily obtain a job that paid for a home, a car, a wife who didn't have to work, and not one but two children. That was easily obtainable for nearly all Americans, certainly much more attainable than it is today.

Today Millennials, even educated and specialized Millennials, do not have and can not afford those things. It isn't because they would rather post on their Instagram or watch television. The reality is that they don't have those things because they can't afford those things and they have been propagandized to not worry about those things. They can't afford those things because the labor market is ****.

The situation that we Millennials are in is a ****ing joke. We got screwed by previous generations.

It's almost like the Government subsidized college loans, which in turn allowed anyone and everyone to get a loan. Qualifications be damned. Then when it turned out they were morons and not smart enough to pass the classes they'd signed up for, the standards were lowered so they wouldn't "feel bad" about themselves (this being the "trophy for everyone generation"). Now you've got morons with useless degrees that they weren't even capable of getting without having the standards dropped, which have been handed out to every Tom, Dick and Harry who wanted one with the frequency of toilet paper. No wonder they're not worth anything more than wiping your ass with.
This is why a degree costs so much now btw, because colleges can charge whatever they want when they know that the taxpayer has to pick up the tab if the student defaults on their loan.

Anything you subsidize, you get more of. When you get more of something, you dilute the market. When the market is diluted, the value of said market is reduced.

BTW the department of labor under Obama changed the way they counted unemployment so that the numbers would look much better, and they now only count people on unemployment benefits and they don't count underemployed or those who gave up looking. It was likely worse than depression era numbers IMO
EE crew checking in. Class of 08. That's right I graduated AS THE ECONOMY MELTED.

Took a job at the first place that was willing to hire me for 20 bucks an hour for a 3 month probationary period. Full hired at 50k after that period and got very large raises after that. Been making six figures for several years.

The moral of the story: it's easy to get stuck in the argument about generations, but at the end of the day the side you pick is irrelevant to your personal success in life. You only have a good 60-70 years on this earth. How long are you going to argue about degrees vs trades? How long will you blame each other? How long will you look for the perfect job because you think the available offers are beneath you?

Think bro, THINK. The sooner you get your foot thru the door the fast you'll rise. I have not been asked about my degree in the past 8 years or so. It's ALL about the experience and professional license / certifications.

Get your head out of your ass, get a legit degree, skill, license and certification. You will reap the benefits. It doesn't matter who is to blame for your failure as long as you're not failing. All you need to succeed is to do it yourself. Go get it bros, you can make it.
