Do you, uh, have any idea how a nuclear bomb works? Hate to break it to you, but they do not require any oxygen to explode. They are nuclear. Not chemical. You are aware they were doing nuclear tests in the vacuum of space, right?

NK is having a good time and a celebration right now apparently. Song playing after the broadcast is the rousing "If Korea decides to do something, it does it".

At the time I posted. no one knew what caused the explosion. It could have been Navy Seals for all we knew.

not sure if srs

nukes don't explode on impact and they're not fire lmao

it's a chain reaction that releases massive amounts of energy and it has to be started aka detonated.

also what we call a "nuke" is actually a missile carrying 10 warheads, aka 10 nuclear bombs that will drop to earth with a speed of 8km/s aka 23 times the speed of sound. pretty much impossible to shoot all of them out of the sky

But it mostly consists of fire right? Is there anything that could put that fire out?

What's the usual altitude these nukes are destroyed? I consider it weird seeing how powerful they are yet not effecting anything on the ground after blowing up in the air

Why do people call them balls of fire then?

But I get what you're saying in away. So before it's detonated, it's destroyed in mid air. Why is it that the initial explosion doesn't detonate the actual warhead? Almost sounds like shooting a grenade

the LGM 30 Minuteman III has a speed of 15,000 mph at burnout and the warhead will hit speeds similar to orbital velocity aka 18,000 mph while falling back to Earth

https://fas.org/nuke/guide/usa/icbm/lgm-30_3.htm

the Chinese DF-41 has a reported speed of 20,000 mph at burnout

which is phucking nuts if you think about it

If there's a fire in a room you use a fire extinguisher to put it out.The same thing can be used to put out enemy warheads. Most of you claimed U.S. can't shoot down warheads, I was just theoretically thinking on how to counter those warheads.
Why not just build a huge flyswatter and swat the nuke out of the sky.

Which is why interception is usually done immediately after the launch or right before reentry when they're at their slowest phase.

I'm sure intercepting ICBMs terminally won't have much success rate, factoring into the amount of MIRV, but that also means nuclear capable ICBM is indeed the best war deterrence

enriched uranium atoms are kept in 2 separate sub critical masses at opposite ends of the bomb.

once the explosion is desired one of the masses is fired into the other using a small amount of conventional explosive

when the 2 masses meet they form a critical mass and causes a fission chain reaction, splitting the atoms and converting matter into energy

bombing a nuke like you suggested will have the same effect as detonating a dirty bomb

it will spread radioactive material across a large area

there were incidents in the past where nukes were dropped from high altitude and failed to detonate, smashing into the ground. the result was that they disintegrated and spread radioactive material everywhere

I thought the nukes went off when intercepted. The process is very strict, so strict that even an outside source wouldn't set it off? Though I see where my theory is flawed, you wouldn't want a warhead going off in the atmosphere

If there is no oxygen, then there can be no fire, you are correct about that, however, based on how nuclear weapons are operated, there are far simpler solutions than "just suck away the atmosphere around it."

I think you are confusing "the nuke gets destroyed" with "the nuke goes off". You could go to town on a nuke with a tank or a flamethrower or a good old hammer, or you could drop it from the air, and it still won't go off. Yes, there will be radiation, but no, there won't be any chain reaction, mushroom cloud etc. Modern nukes are VERY stable constructs, with strict arming sequences. They are far more complicated than a ball of uranium with some C4 attached to it.

They have to be. You start banging on an old WW2 bomb/mine with a hammmer and you, and maybe your nearby buddies can go boom. Or the regular bombs/missiles on an airplane carrying them gets hit or just crashes. The ppl on the plane and at the crash site go boom, not much else. If nukes worked the same way, then in the case of a plane crash you could say goodbye to whole cities.

Long story short, you can shoot down nuclear missiles with regular missiles and they still won't activate.

Pretty sure NK will not nuke SK under any circumstance.

1. NK wants to unify the country, by nuking they'll make SK inhabitable.
2. Radiation will affect NK and probably China & Russia too.

NK might nuke Japan (or the US) tho.
