Girlfriend gets pissed because I don't tip at restaurants, what do?

I believe the tipping culture in this country is retarded (like most other things in this country) and think it's ridiculous someone gets 20% for dropping off a plate of food, filing my water one time, then texting on their cell phone in the corner the rest of the time. This is what happened tonight, and I didn't leave any tip. My girlfriend was embarrassed and ended up leaving cash on the table.

Where the hell did this automatic 20% come from? If you dont make enough money, get a real job.

If the person did not deserve the tip then I agree, but if they provided an excellent service then of course tip.

Not tipping is BS unless the service is really poor. If I were your date I would have left cash too.

Sometimes the kitchen is slow/in the weeds, but a good server will keep checking in with you.

OTOH if your food takes forever and then arrives cold? Then I tend to think my server left it sitting.

If you don't want to tip then don't eat at places where a tip is expected.

Me and my boys would go to a TGIF for Monday Night Football last season for an endless apps happy hour. Our waitress was very attentive, never charged us for drinks, hooked us with free soda, salad or soup, and had our table set aside for us right when we walked in. The app was like $10 and I would give her a $10 tip. I wasn't attracted to her at all but great service should be rewarded. Waiters hourly wage nationally is $5. I understand not wanting to reward someone providing poverty service. But to shaft all waiters regardless of performance is a super douche move.

I have no data and am not interested in searching for it, but I would assume that American restaurant prices are comparatively lower than those of countries that don't have a "retarded tipping culture." Tips allow the owners to pay their wait staff less, which keeps their overhead cost down. I assume that gets passed on to the customer. Can anyone confirm?
