My general rule of thumb is; the less you say or give away, the better.

Obviously there's exceptions to the rule because you'll never build a network for future opportunities/be happy in your job if you don't speak to anyone but I try keep my cards close and I've found that works for me.

One of my best friend's was my boss at my first job out of college.

That was the only exception to what others are saying on here. The less personal stuff you reveal the better. I always hate when people try and become friends outside of work. I am there just to make money and leave. Why would I want to work hang outside of a job.

Rule # 2: Never work in an office that is mostly women. I am not being sexist but I tried insurance underwriting for a short time and it was the worst thing ever. They acted like they were busy as hell all the time, the gossiped constantly, got catty with each other and I swear every one of them cried at least once in the year I worked there. They would try and get me in trouble for miscing and chit. I would get all my work done within the first 30 minutes to hour on the job. They would drag their work out all day. I remember when my manager confronted me about it, I seriously responded "shouldn't you be asking them why it takes me 30 minutes to get the same amount of work done but it takes them 8 hours?"
