Planet fitness is Genius.
1. advertise to people who hate working out
2. charge insanely low monthly fee
3. all the people who sign up never use the gym (because they hate working out)
4. free money from unused memberships
5. kick out lifting brahs, zero wear and tear on equipment
6. non-lifters who do use planet fitness equipment are rare
7. PROFIT

They intentionally appeal to those who will sign up and never go. Giving out pizza, bagels, etc helps to make sure those who do go, don't see any results. Their business model is actually to continue charging you months after you cancel your membership. They charged me 6 months after I closed mine. I didn't even notice the $20 being skimmed every month. When I tried to correct the issue and get a refund over the phone, they told me I was lying. I posted a 1 star review on the particular gyms ********, then they responded with "Come in and we'll resolve it."

He's also like 50 years old, so you should probably cut him some slack.Fixed for ya. If some amount of $ would allow you to ignore your health, you're an idiot.
Actually if you read the interview, it is kind of cool. He talks about how he started the gym with his brother, and the first time, they bought a Gold's Gym, and their gym failed. They got evicted, but didn't give up, and they tried again, and here they are now. If you guys would be less superficial about chit, you might realize you could learn a thing about business and perseverance from this dude.
Also, while planet fitness is kind of a joke when it comes to weight loss (which let's be honest, is the primary draw to get people into gyms even though exercise really isn't a great strategy for weight loss) or any amount of serious athletic training, it does get people up and moving, even if they are just walking on treadmills. It's a lot better than the couch.

Planet Fitness is a gimmick that's kinda the opposite gimmick of Crossfit.
They are prejudiced against actual lifters and chase them away. That gets people not actually interested in fitness to join, then they will quickly stop going, and still continue to pay the fee. In addition, upgrades and maintenance are minimal because the gym isn't used much.
Crossfit: That appeals to naive people who believe you have to blast everything out and that gym routines, equipment is stupid. So, they PAY to go to an empty place, burn out quickly, then stop going due to fatigue, injury, etc and blame themselves while still paying.

You mentioned the average healthy, active 50 year old, and you're right if you compare him to that. The average 50 year old, however, is neither healthy nor active. I would think you should compare him to the average 50 year old rather than the average healthy, active 50 year old, since that is holding him to the standards of something like 5% of men aged 50.
