No doubt, FEMA is full of crazy survivalists and such:

Me, I'll go with the advice of those who do it for a living, vs derpa derps in full cope mode. You will not find someone who puts a priority on their own survival without at least a basic BOB.

I practice having a few months of food incase of emergency. I try to rotate it out to keep it fresh as possible. Usually canned things and stuff that lasts a long time.

Water is a little harder to store since you can only store so much, it takes a lot of water to survive for long periods of time. I keep a few weeks of it on hand.

As for a bug out bag. It would be hard to just walk from home to wilderness. I trust that my truck would still work in the event of an emergency

And well ammo and guns? I bought enough already hahahaha

Like I said in my earlier post. Earthquakes/MASS Power Outages...yeah that would make sense. But that doesn't happen unless you live in an earthquake prone area or a third world country...

It doesn't mean people are coping. It just means that the BOB most likely wouldn't come in handy.

The argument of "Q is dead simple: what is the cost having X and never needing it, vs needing it and not having it? " is failed because you can apply that saying to literally ANY situation. By that logic everyone who goes to the park with their kids should pack band-aids, a sleeping bag, a gallon of water, a tent, and some MRE's in their stroller just in case a 1/1,000,000 FREAK environmental disaster happens.
Not the brightest crayon in the box are you?

What's stopping a cyber attack on our power grid from a foreign or domestic enemy? What's stopping some sort of EMP device from setting us back 100 years for 2-3 weeks? What's stopping solar flares and other natural disasters from knocking out power? What's stopping natural disasters from knocking out power?

You mean to tell me that these possibilities don't exist and therefore people shouldn't be prepared with some food, water (maybe ammo and a gun) just in case? I'm guessing you aren't very old and never saw what happened in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. I mean jesus christ, these things have happened all through history but because they don't exist in your little blip of time-fame reference, they don't exist in the real world to you. Hard? No, it would suck nads beyond belief. You know what sucks far worse? Doing that with nothing but the clothes you had on. Again, this does not seem a complex topic.

Im sure a bug out bag will be really useful in case the country collapses. How about this, instead of spending the 50 dollars you recommended on these quality emergency preps, I'll just choose to live in an area where that **** doesn't happen.

I don’t know how I feel about agreeing with you... but I do.

All situations are “unlikely” to happen, I don’t walk around living in fear that San Andreas is going to break at the seams and send people into a looting hysteria to survive. But in the event it happens, it’s good to have a plan of what to do.

Take Katrina for example, the looting and survival chaos that happened after. Not every emergency contingency will be the same obviously. People are taking this “bag” too literally. Every location has its potential “I need to get out” scenario. If I were in a flood zone or hurricane prone areas, I’d have inflatable rafts. Here in LA right next to the mountains... I pack hiking shoes and a fishing pole.

It’s just common sense that takes a couple days to put together then you have peace of mind. Anyway there’s no point convincing people. I really hope nothing happen to y’all that are unprepared. Seriously wouldn’t want anyone to learn the hard way to have an escape plan.

HOLLLLYYYYY Fukk you are very amusing. Quality post. Lol I'm plenty old enough to remember Katrina. If I recall properly those people had TONS of notice that a massive hurricane was headed their way. The one's who stayed knew the risks and I highly doubt a bag full of 2-3 days worth of supplies would've done much for them.

On the topic of natural disasters its clear you didn't read my post. If you're in a prone area to disasters it makes sense.

Also, if one of your BEST examples is "an EMP strike settings us back 100 years for 2-3 weeks" bahahaha dude you have some mental issues. Also, even though that's never going to happen, a BOB isn't going to do sh!t since I'll still be in my house...

I've already posted once in this thread, so I won't bring up the points I made there. However, for all of you who believe in the usefulness of this BOB, you do realize that you should keep it in the trunk of your car, right? If this hypothetical emergency is so quick in its onset, then there's a good chance you wouldn't be able to go home and grab the bag since the emergency very likely could occur while you're at the workplace where you spend 40+ hours per week.

Strong logic. Because all areas are safe from some sort of natural disaster. The entire planet isn't even safe from solar flares. What area are you going to live in for that?

Or you know, the bug out bag is meant to get you out of town to where you can hunt/fish if needed OR to a town nearby where you have family or friends who can help you, etc. I keep enough in my bag to sustain me for about 72 hours plus a 22 and ammo in case I need to shoot something small to eat. Only thing missing is a fishing pole but I can make a net and catch if I have to. This isn't a bag to make you live the life of luxury in the case of an emergency, it's to sustain you until you can get out of city centers or locations where looting, rioting and chaos is happening.

If you don't understand the point of it, that's fine. But don't sit here and pretend that Katrina type scenarios don't happen and that EMP attacks on power grids are out of the question. If you want to be the first to die, go for it. I'll do my best to survive and hope for the best.

Agree. For some reason people seem to equate being prepared to being a basement dwelling retard as opposed to just being prepared. I'm guessing it's the same type of people who run out of gas on the freeway after failing to realize they should fill up before going on a trip.

I personally know someone who thought he could ride it out in his house as no storm before had been an issue, and when the water got to high, he grabbed his bag and shot gun and hiked his way out of the city. He spent one night on the road, and next day made it to his friends place out of the city. He had what he needed not make an already chit experience a lot worse.

He was able to avoid going anywhere near the bedlam that was the shelters etc, where all the "I can't imagine I'd ever need anything beyond the corner store" types went nuts. He also had some great advice on what had been good to have, and what he'd had i his BOB that he didn't need, and a few few things he's wished he'd had.

Number one thing was "An extra pair socks" he said

I'm a lunatic because you don't understand the point of a bug out bag? Okay.....

The bag isn't supposed to keep you alive forever you mouth breathing *******. It's supposed to get you somewhere to where you can survive until help arrives, the situation ends, etc. Is it really that difficult to understand or are you purposefully trolling? I refuse to believe you're this stupid.

And strong logic on Katrina. Here's a scenario you goddamn *******:

-You have a sick/old family member that can't be evacuated quickly and by the time you get her safely out of town the roads are jam packed with everyone else trying to leave. Now you can run out of gas on the road out of town (lol if you think a run on the gas stations won't happen so good luck finding fuel) or you can hunker down. Either way, some food/water is in order and if you do get caught somewhere that you aren't going to receive help for a few days, a bag of equipment to keep you warm, shelter, etc is going to save your life. IT IS NOT THAT HARD TO FIGURE OUT IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN 3 BRAIN CELLS.

You can keep food/water in the trunk of your car for emergencies too. I always do. Also a snow shovel, a jack/lug wrench, road flares, medical kit, extra ammo, flashlight, seatbelt cutter, knife, headlamp, emergency shelter. Simple things that go in cars in case you get stuck for a day or two.

I never said there was no situation in which I need to leave my home suddenly, I already acknowledged scenarios in prior posts in which I would. I already stated that if it happens, I would hop into my car and leave town for somewhere safe. I don’t know where a survival bag needs to fit into that equation

If this hypothetical emergency is so quick in its onset, then there's a good chance you wouldn't be able to go home and grab the bag since the emergency very likely could occur while you're at the workplace where you spend 40+ hours per week.
That's referred to a "get back home bag" (GBHB) by some. In most cases, best thing you can do is get home and stay there, and in some cases getting home may be a serous challenge, but the BOB and the GBHB are not always the same thing.

Personal opinion aside, good info for people to be prepared for anything OP.
There are tons of reasons you may need to leave. Fires happen, and after natural disasters particularly earthquakes they can be the biggest killer.

Could be something as "simple" as a toxic chemical release from a truck or rail car or factory or plant etc.

lots and lots of additional nonsense
are we moving the goal posts now and not talking about a bug out bag but general preparedness?

I don't worry about solar flares or EMP attacks for the same reason that I don't play the lottery. If you wanna line up to play your numbers or waste money keeping the MREs in your backpack fresh, you do you.

If you want to make an argument that I should subscribe to the mormon preparedness model then I will agree with you and I do but that's not what you doomsday prepper wannabes are talking about, you are just being silly.

It's all good. Jafomofo on the misc has it figured out!
lol I know, right?

How many people have not needed their vehicle's airbagyet?Or really needed their seat belt? Smoke alarm? CO alarm? Fire extinguisher? Yet still have or use said item?

dont be silly, you need 2 rambo knives and at least a 22 so you can hunt rabbit and a pocket fishing pole to pull some fresh trout out of the river and some overpriced MREs, maybe some gum to keep your breath fresh for the zombies, but if you wanna die first, be my guest.

First EMP Blasts and now Solar Flares...you are either a fantastic troll, in which case bravo, or you need to seek medical attention.

You clearly watch to many movies. I'm guessing you've watched The Walking Dead series 8 times.

Also your story example is based off of me living in/around a big city. You're making assumptions that everyone is in the exact same situation. I'm sorry to burst your small minded bubble but that's simply not the case.

A BOB might make sense for someone living in California where a wild fire or earthquake is more likely to happen. It makes sense for someone who lives in Kansas where a tornado can pop up out of no where. It doesn't make sense for someone in the Northern parts of the country where it rains and snows except for that one time every 10 years where a CAT 1 tornado knocks over some street signs.

People like you need to get hobbies.

Thanks for the laughs. Lol @ Solar Flares and EMP's.

Most people don't have the sense of personal responsibility for this, they would rather pretend it won't happen, plan to take from others to get by if it does, or expect big daddy government to do it all for them (which is just another way of taking from others)
