Had some friends over Saturday night and did a bourbon tasting for them.

I laid out 6 samples for each person, from "harshest" to sweetest in plastic shot glasses, had them sample each one neat then add a couple drops of water and try again. I had them give each one a score out of 100.

The offerings were, in order:

Henry McKenna 10 year
Evan Williams Single Barrel
Elijah Craig Small Batch
IW Harper bourbon
Russels Reserve 10 year
Eagle Rare

One guy picked IW Harper and both ladies picked Eagle Rare. Kind of surprised nobody liked Russells as I find it the most vanilla and sweet of the group.

Exactly. Craft beer is the same way. Styles are much less tied to regions/Nations than in the past

Finally got to try Weller Antique 107 at the local watering hole today.

Not bad, but I got ass raped paying $15 for a 1oz pour when a full bottle is only around $35.

It may have already been mentioned, but I highly recommend Blade and Bow. It's made in the famous Stitzer-Weller distillery where a lot of the Pappy Van Winkles were produced. One of my favorite bourbons I've had personally and you should see it on the shelf for ~$49.99.

It's impossible to find in stores, and today was the first time I've ever seen it behind a bar anywhere. It's a fiery drink for a wheated bourbon, felt like an awful lot of cinnamon.

Caskmates is ok. They don't have that much complexity compared to a scotch or a bourbon - Irish Whiskeys are smooth above all else. I always have one on the shelf for smooth sipping but I don't personally think any of them are super complex.

I love Jamesons and a buddy got me a Jameson's 18 year for Christmas and it was... just ok. Like "ok, this is really, really, really damn smooth, but that's it."

First time trying and finding an airplane bottle of Knob Creek and it isn't bad at all.
Might pick up a fifth sometime.
I can't see it as a cocktail bourbon, more of a sipping.

Couple recent pick ups. Cracked open the Four Roses last night, and really like it. I like it more at home now than I did tasting it at the distillery a couple weeks ago.

Also, for $12 the Heaven Hill is excellent. It amazes me something so cheap can be so good.

Just checked the shelves this weekend and it was gone - along with Blanton's! Blanton's drifted from $50 to $60 over the past few years but you could still get it... evidently it sells out everywhere now, down here at least.



Picked up a bottle of Basil Hayden's this weekend, since I hadn't had before, or at least had no memory of what it's like. I should have googled it first - the stuff is VERY smooth and sippable, but does not have much of the complexity or flavors that I personally like in my whiskey. I wouldn't say it's "bland" or "beginner" but it's... just okay, and at $50 for a bottle there are far better choices.

Still haven't tried the OGD 114, will try and track a bottle down since you all seem to love it and I like 80 proof OGD.

Basil Hayden's is always a safe choice and for some reason is usually stocked in restaurants that don't really keep a lot of bourbons

seems to always be readily available in stores too

you want more complex in that price range I'd give Booker's a try if you haven't before

not a fan of OGD, never had the 114 though

Don't get me wrong, it's not BAD, but it's a $30 bottle not a $60 one. I'd rather have two bottles of eagle rare, know what I mean?

Bookers is my favorite. Love it by itself and imo its the best for cocktails especially old fashioneds because they can be a little sweet sometimes. The high alc content gives the OF a lot of balance.

First post here. Im in the restaurant industry and have been for years so ive tried a ton of this chit. Agree w opinion on Basil Hayden as well.

Love Bookers, Knob, Woodford, Makers 46, Angels Envy, Four Roses, Blantons. Bookers is my go to though.

Trying to break into the petey scotch department. If anyone has any suggestions other than laphroiag lmk

Throw in a cheapie $10 wild card bourbon, this Ancient Age is incredible and super cheap. I bet you'll be surprised how it stacks up against spirits 3-4x the price! Only $10.10 here in Ohio for a 750ml!

It's on the sweet side, so I bet most people enjoy it.
