Food for thought.
The fact I'm even in a universe raises the possibility of a creator. There are two possibilities either there is a creator or something comes out of being from nothing.

And if there is a creator it does not automatically follow that said creator wants our worship.

In bold. I don't think science and religion are in conflict with one another.

You said you studied this quite a bit. What's your take on it? I'm interested in your opinion.

My opinion is that science is the study of the creation and the application of what was made by God. Science is about the natural world. God is supernatural.

Just as the law of lift superceeds the law of gravity, so does the supernatural superceed the natural. Just as the law of lift doesn't negate the law of gravity, studying God does not negate the study of science.

For others, its more about the questions - science and religion ask different questions.

A study:

"The study's results challenge longstanding assumptions about the science-faith interface. While it is commonly assumed that most scientists are atheists, the global perspective resulting from the study shows that this is simply not the case."

Unless this god of yours is a colossal bell-end then I see no reason to fear it.

But, does it make sense that all this order - the biomechanics of your hand, the symmetry of flowers, the mathematical precision of the natural laws of physics - that all of that is mere happenstance?

I don’t think it’s “all crap,” I just approach religion and the things it requires people to believe with skepticism. What do I have to fear in regards to what? I’m not worried about eternal damnation, that’s for sure.

In bold was actually my precise stance up until recently. The only reason I started to move even more towards center (I think the bolded is a defense for creationism) was because in debating this issue, separating God from science was unacceptable for atheists, as they abide by the fundamental rule that all beings must have a beginning or a birth. Well religion says that God has no beginning, he always was. Even the universe had a beginning - so when you reach that layer; the debate turns into a stalemate or self-proclaimed victory.

Now I kind of bench myself but sometimes point out immature assumptions or fallacies. I use a term I heard from a TV personality - I'd describe myself as "cheerfully agnostic".

I don't know what it is to be omnipotent. It just seems like a waste to ever correct the things you created. When your on that level wouldn't you want to see the challenge which is Humanity.

If we don't address it here... It had to be addressed with God's evolution or you are just choosing not to question how that all powerful being came into existence.

There is a lot we as humans don't know. So ask questions and try to figure out a way to test it. Do research.

Just going "it looks Complex therefor god" but not any god. One of the 7 or so Gods that happen to be in flavor at the time of your existence.

You think doing good out of fear of retribution or to please an external being is more worthwhile than doing good because you believe intrinsically it is the right thing to do.

The fact you can’t even contemplate the concept is worrying in the extreme

Yah, Christians are the best at judging people and then saying they're not judging. Pretty comical stuff.

I think you know that isn't how Christianity works. Heck most Christians don't even believe good works are necessary for salvation so whatever good they do is out of their own motivations. Yes, Christians also believe that purity of motive is preferable to doing something out of fear or because you are told too.

What we question about most atheists is their ability to be moral solely by their own made up morality. It is awful convenient to be able to make up your own rules and judge your actions by your own standard. Of course you are going to feel pretty great by the low bar you have set for yourself. Everyone need to look externally whether it is God or the collective wisdom of mankind by looking at history.

Most religious believe going to their church and being seen is enough
Some believe in evangelicalism ...I personally find that disrespectful

You act as though atheists grow up in a vacuum that there is no understanding of religious tenets nor morality ..that there are no philosophers or science or literary greats ..that there aren’t abundant sources to learn what it means to be human

It is not lacking to be guided by your own moral centre.

Christians are the same way.

The Old Testament has a whole bunch of laws that modern day Christians try to say something like "O those laws only applied to the ancient Hebrews" As if an all knowing eternal God would arbitrarily set different sets of rules for different sets of people.

I will grant you that religious based morals are harder to change, but it still happens. Some religions change more readily than others. Which I would argue isn't necessarily a bad thing. If they didn't I would hate Christianity as much as I hate Islam.

Your Christians-are-holier-than-thou attitude is unbecoming. Your bias is showing. The simple fact is that modern society dictates the morals by which its people should live. Said morals may be derived from Christian teachings but Christianity is no longer relevant in determining the morals of a modern society.

I think you have been brainwashed into thinking atheists can't possibly have as good a set of morals as Christians do. The atheists I know do not simply come up with their own set of morals, they base their morals on those of the society in which we live.

Yes there are a lot of fake religious people

But I’ve also dealt with Christian parents who believed that beating their children with a stick was appropriate in the eyes of their Lord (eldest 13, reported by 6 year old)

And encountered people who believed in witchcraft and demonic possession

And encountered people who believed in witchcraft and demonic possession
Not sure if that is because they are religious or culture in which they were raised. How bad was the beating? I was hit in face, back, hand and butt. What the difference between the people who believe in witchcraft and the atheists I know who believe in Aura and Chakra reading.

sawoobley, do not forget that atheists are simply people like everyone else. I've been Christian and know very well the attitudes and stereotypes on non believers. You are to believe that we are all immoral, and would have no qualms with murdering, stealing, etc. because there is no eternal consequence. The thing is, we have feeling like everyone else. Most humans prefer not to be azzholes to others just because they can. We have a society, we have law, and we have our culture. Our society (and all others) are fine with killing if it is an enemy that opposed us, but killing within our own society is looked down upon. That isn't based on religion, it's universal tribalism.

We aren't unknowable anomalies that refuse to see the truth right in front of us. We are as normal and well adjusted as you are, and you would understand us if you just take the time to get to know us as your fellow man, and not come to us with a preconceived opinion on who we are.
I'm back, bitches!
