My socialogy professor in my lower division GE classes told me something that stuck with me.

"It's never a good time to have a kid"

What she meant is you can spend your entire life putting it off for various reasons. I told myself I wanted to have my first before 30. I could easily do plenty of things before I have a kid but that quote sticks with me.

On the other hand I'm in the 28% tax bracket and my gf will be in the 33% when she finishes her phd (job lined up through practicum already).

you way smarter than me. my wife keeps trickin me into busting raw. i have to drink busch light now, which will likely only exacerbate the busting raw issue.

i remember reading somewhere that a kid costs on average 250 large before college, and i thought no fkn way. my 3 year old has easily racked up 30 large already.

Here OP I got some tips on affording kids:



1. Quit your job, then get diagnosed with some type of mental issue that prevents you from working.

2. Live on gov benefits. Disability/Free food/reduced cost utilities/reduced cost rent/cash on a card every month for doing nothing.

3. File your taxes every Feb 1 get 5k per kid around the 10th of Feb and blow it on some stupid sh*t so you are dead broke before april.

4. Whine about being broke all year despite having no bills/expenses and getting free money.

No doubt it's expensive and you'd have to make sacrifices. It might be worth it to have someone stay home for a couple of years, or maybe a grandparent would be willing to help to reduce daycare costs. I feel it's best to reduce expenses and look for non-taxable value--home economics. Making more money helps but 1/4 or more is lost to taxes.

Whatever you do, planning and preparation helps tremendously

Newborns aren’t that expensive ...they don’t need much ..breastfeed, hand me down clothes, 2nd hand buggy

You can do childcare to earn some more

It’s just about budgeting for a few years until the youngest is in school

If you panic about everything you will make no changes

Sometimes you just jump and it works out

Hey OP, not sure where you live. Could you please elaborate on the area and the cost of an entry level 3 bedroom home there?

Honestly, if you're in the 25% bracket, you guys should be fine. A LOT of the entertainment expenses are cut when the kid is young. You're not going to be going out to fancy dinners, running up bar tabs, movies, ect like you probably do now. Beyond that, most of the big-ticket stuff you need initially will come from family (hopefully) and from friends at the baby shower. We're about to have our first and we have the entire nursery prepared without having purchased a thing ourselves yet. That just leaves the cost of food, diapers, and health insurance as the big things.

Do you guys have any friends with simliar aged kids? Splitting a nanny with a friend, or swapping days of babysitting can help offset the cost of child care.

Move to Canada and get on dat baby bonus time. My brother and his wife are considered "middle class" and have two children. Gov sends $1200 a month for their baby bonus. They get that until the kids turn 18. Pays for their mortgage + utilities. Wut.

(and no, its not welfare, everyone is entitled to baby bonus, how much you get depends on your income. Lower income=higher baby bonus. Gov supplements lower incomes for those with children)
