Hey OP, not sure where you live. Could you please elaborate on the area and the cost of an entry level 3 bedroom home there?

Honestly, if you're in the 25% bracket, you guys should be fine. A LOT of the entertainment expenses are cut when the kid is young. You're not going to be going out to fancy dinners, running up bar tabs, movies, ect like you probably do now. Beyond that, most of the big-ticket stuff you need initially will come from family (hopefully) and from friends at the baby shower. We're about to have our first and we have the entire nursery prepared without having purchased a thing ourselves yet. That just leaves the cost of food, diapers, and health insurance as the big things.

Do you guys have any friends with simliar aged kids? Splitting a nanny with a friend, or swapping days of babysitting can help offset the cost of child care.

If you really want kids, downsize somewhere else. Move to a cheaper area. Buy used cars, etc. My wife and I are raising 2 kids on a middle class income and doing just fine (saving for retirement, own a house, go on vacation, etc). I work in the suburbs south of Pittsburgh but we live in a small town 30 miles south of where I work. Our house cost 1/3 of what a house costs near my work. If you want kids and you're not a $10k/day CEO, you'll have to make sacrifices elsewhere.

How does child care neutralize your wife's paycheck.I had a nanny when my kids were young, it's like 12-15 per hour for them to watch 2 kids, and you can take a 6K deduction on your taxes for child care.

Does your wife make 12-15 per hour?

Anyway, it gets easier when they go to school, child care expenses go way down.
