Before the show came out I posted a few articles here of people upset that a white man is playing a Japanese character (which is just wrong, he's not from Japan, he's not even from Earth).

It was interesting to me that they could be offended, since the book/show have all this interesting stuff to say about what racism/prejudice would look like in a world where you are distinct from your body. In the book he even (briefly) gets put into the body of a teen girl, and there's some cool stuff about gender and identity. But instead it's "why did a white man get a role that could have gone to an asian actor". I imagine the showrunner (who is a woman) is shaking her head like "the fuk?"

It's honestly the first show I've watched recently where I didn't get any kind of SJW undertones at all.

The asian main character does play a big part of the series overall. And he was just as good as the white guy.

The guy's not really even full Japanese as I understand it. He's half white (I think), hence the last name of Kovacs. But I can sort of see where they're coming from. The thing works better in the book, since you're in the guy's head; you know he's the same guy regardless of the body. In the show, you just see a white guy who says a few Japanese words. But yeah, it's a stupid complaint overall.

If anything, from what I've read of the book so far, the show has gone out of its way to include more "grrl power."

Because there isn't much of a point. The double becomes a separate person and isn't really you.

I'm on episode 7.

It's no Expanse, but the show is pretty good. Not great, but good. Main character and the ninja chick are good. Lt. Ortega is annoying af though

^^^holy spoilers brah

I got around to finishing this. It got better as it went on. In the beginning it was typical and hinging highly on it's cinematography (which was exceptional all throughout) but it caught me by episode 4 and actually got me to care about the characters and main mystery enough to actually get invested.

Unfortunately, the plot contrivances were pretty glaring. The center mystery and how it unfolded was done pretty well except for what is IMO one of the biggest aspects of a mystery story; the killers motivation made NO fking sense. The twist as to who it was, why he/she was involved with Bancroft and how he/she went about it was well done since it was set up with clues all throughout, but there's no way to really guess it outside of pure luck because the killer had no real driving motive (well, he/she did have motive, but it makes no sense in any way and felt like it was thrown in to create false drama). The worst part is I hear the book did a better job with this part because the killer was a completely different person with an actually sensible motivation. All they had to do was stick closer to the source material. The side mystery concerning Lizzie was more well done and made sense though, so there's that.

Aside from all that, the main characters arc was kind of strange. He went from not giving a chit about anyone to being stereotypically heroic pretty quickly and for no obvious reason. That was weird.

In the end I liked most of the characters and antagonists (and how they all wrapped up), but they fumbled the biggest part of a mystery story so I can't rate it super high. If that was better done it'd probably be a solid 8-8.5 for me but that combined with the mentioned contrivances knock it down to a 6.5. It's enjoyable, but a bit too mindless at times to be a good mystery.

In other news, they already greenlit the second season. I liked this enough to tune in for that so hopefully they do a better job with the mystery.

Just started watching The Killing because I hear Joel Kinnaman was good in that as well. Show is pretty good if you want to binge a detective crime drama. Kinnaman looking like a bean pole compared to how swole he looked in Altered Carbon. Very good acting and likable character. One of the main reasons I keep watching.

last 3 episodes of this show ruined the entire thing. double sleeving was bad. the entirey of lizzie especially her metamorphosis was so god damned awful that i had to skip parts to avoid gouging my eyes out.

Wished I stopped watching after the first 5-6 episodes which were fairly strong. Last few episodes are just nonsense stacked atop more nonsense.

Think about how stupid the plotting becomes once we get the sister reveal: if he meant so much to her why the hell wouldn't she have just spelled everything out to him personally right when they took him off ice/sleeved him/whatever they did when they revived him. "I've built an empire and we can have unlimited wealth/power/bang endless 10/10s and we're pretty much immortal thanks to re-sleeving/cloning. Sound good?" Instead she goes through these elaborate machinations using henchmen and comes across as a crazy Bond villain.

And agree with brah above, the Lizzie stuff was ridiculous.

AI’s running a hotel was like a fad that got old. You know how things are big for awhile than stop being big?

Also, apparently some AI’s are considered clingy or possessive in this show. They basically read your psychology and fulfill your every whim. Like an overly helpful stalker.

I don’t think I’d mind it but that’s just me.

All done!

The ending was a let down. The changes from the book were the few missteps the series made. The Lizzie story felt unnecessary, rushed and tacked on. I appreciate the story they wanted to tell with her character, but it didn't have any time to breathe.

Making reileen his sister instead of just some random made her motives almost incomprehensible.

The final battle was changed. Saw that coming - the books climax was so violent I wondered how you'd even film it.

Last few episodes were definitly weak.

Main baddie wasnt his sister in the books? The betrayal aspect of it from her was the worst part imo

It's a bit of a let down. Netflix is showing me that they're still not as talented as HBO or certain shows on Showtime.

It's like Hyundai makes an $80,000 car, but you compare it against a new top end Mercedes and realize it still doesn't match up. It's just barely entertaining enough to watch, but way too many logical loopholes and way too much bouncing around. The lack of realism both in the acting and plot/technology involved is killing it for me. This show is just a time passer for me until the good shows start their next season. I like the main actor, I wish he held out for a better writing/higher budget show.

Not sure if I'm correct but it seems that HBO actually produces it's own shows while Netflix just paid someone to produce its. Thus it cedes the control of quality to someone else.

That's a good point. I know Netflix will host shows they didn't create a lot of the time (think Breaking Bad) and I think they'll also occasionally pay others to produce shows, but I also thought the "Netflix Original" shows were purely Netflix creations, or at least thought they had a few pure Netflix creations like House of Cards.

House of Cards is basically the only Netflix show that I think competes with the giants like HBO. There are a few others that get close but not quite as good. I'm rooting for them because intelligent/quality high budget shows are amazing, but Altered Carbon right now is looking a little cheap.

PS - off topic but they did do really good with that one movie Beasts of No Nation. I don't know why they don't just stick to the writers and directors that obviously hit the home runs. They had another Netflix original movie that was a huge failure.
