On topic: It has some positives, as much as I despise ******** I think the general knowledge of some of it's users I know has increased if ever so slightly as they are exposed to news/random facts etc that they would never have been exposed to previously (as they did not use the internet much).
Overall it's a sickening phenomenon but there is no going back imo.

Social media has taken everybody out of the present moment. Lingering in the back of everyone's mind is "where should I eat to get the best instagram photo", "dam should have snap chatted that", "wait let me get this on camera", "hey say that again for my snapchat", etc. Actions in life are dictated by how they will be perceived on social media and how it will in turn affect their status and projected lifestyle image.
Spontaneous social interaction is often frowned upon and met with contempt meaning that socializing has become a thing limited to a very small number of places and occasions. People have a harder time meeting and feeling safe and comfortable talking to people. They will not put themselves out there as much because society has shunned it. Social relationships are glorified transactions (I'll give you my time if you give me entertaining conversation). People only care about what you can provide for them, and if something changes and you can no longer provide that, you'll be discarded in the same way as a broken watch.

Social media is what you want it to be.
Everyone is very quick to point out that things like instagram/snapchat/******** are just a front and that most people fake their lives for the benefit of looking cooler in front of a mass audience.
Well no chit lol.
What happens when you are in a bad mood? Do you just take it out on other people like a fukking lunatic or do you fake happiness until you figure your chit out and you’re legitimately happy?
At the end of the day social media simply reemphasizes what we as humans already are. If youre an insecure bish who only cares about yourself, it shows in your social media. Same goes for genuinely good hearted people. If you hate on people who front on social media, and decide to try starting some accounts on your own.... Guess what? It will show. You can’t fake out 7 billion people. Who you are will start to catch on no matter how big or small your following is. It will grow or shrink depending on who you are as a person. Social media did not change this. It just provided people with more outlets to prove who they are.
For example...Are ig models annoying? To me, not really. This is just how life is. They’re not stealing fame from you. They just reemphasize that you are upset that you havent figured out how to make the game of life work for you. Some people have it easy. Some people don’t. Play your hand. Most people in the 50% can do a whole bunch of things differently and have a life where theyre not raging about whats posted on social media.
Social media shows all the flaws in humans, from how people use social media to how people hate on those who use social media for reasons that are pretty contradicting.
Genuinely happy/good people dont gaf either way. They post or they dont. They dont get their panties all in a wad because a guy w a worse physique than them figured out how to make a proper youtube channel. They are happy and confident to post their life (or not) and genuinely feel happy when they see their friends slaying life ( or appearing to be)
So my answer - its great for society because it literally shoves in your face everything thats right and wrong with the world and gives you insane amounts of information on how to live life in a way thats both as honest as possible and also in a way that will make you genuinely happy. Its free information. If you don’t like that, then wow.

Instant gratification addiction technology is destroying society.
I go for a run a few times a week. Sometimes towards the end on my way back to my apartment the junior high school is letting out and the kids start cluttering the sidewalk. I'd say about 85% of them are glued to their cellphones staggering down the sidewalk completely oblivious to the world around them. It's pretty fricken ridiculous to watch ... i mean literally a line of kids 1/10th of a mile long walking crooked (because they aren't watching where they are going) down the sidewalk with their phone 2 feet from their face. If two kids are walking together they're usually sharing something on their phone.
Oh ya... 3/4ths of them are fat.
IMO... this addiction to tech that people have is a serious... serious problem.

Not think, it is. Especially for young kids who are missing out on real life interpersonal skills or not being told off if they are doing something that isn't acceptable. Social media is a fantasy world for many, no repercussions, too safe, too coddling. It will and does play havoc on a child's social development. It's the over-worn notion of "Use in moderation", which sadly if humans would exercise some discipline then they could enjoy many things like social media, alcohol, fapping, drugs etc without drowning in the deep end. The evidence is everywhere, the awkwardness and lack of verbal/social skills so many people have. I see so many people glued to social media when they are FUKING OUTSIDE, smh. You can just tell they are uncomfortable with confrontation or having someone be blunt with them and you can tell they just want to run home to their safe bubble world.
Technology should supplement your life, not replace it. Go learn how to make a proper fire, build a shelter, go out and chat to a random group @ a bar, play some sports etc. All of this is character building and has run-off benefits.

like with anything it requires control. its great to keep up with family and "true" friends. AND good to find entertainment from mountain bikes,art,photography,bmx,movie/tv groups,etc..Just use it for those things and its ok.

Here is my take: we have all bought the kool-aid and believe we not only have (badly formed) opinions, but also that the entire world needs to know about them. And not just our opinions, but also what we had for dinner and how we scored last night in Overwatch. Because in lieu of actual achievements we trick ourselves in simply elevating crap like that to something newsworthy.
Now, who was able to give his opinion "back in the day"? The ability to read a larger audience was scarce, like TV interviews, news articles and so on, which means, the scarce resource was fought over and only awarded to those who had something substantial to say. Not every dumb kunt got put on a pedestal and not every schmuck was put in front of a mic. So those who talked and had an audience, usually were deserving of that attention.
But we live in a world now where everyone things he is entitled to attention, plus every dumb chit he does warrants to be put on world-wide display. We have mastered the art of maximizing noise, to drown out the signal.
I have deleted all my social media accounts and am doing the one-book-per-month challenge, so I usually pester my friends when we MEET, LIKE IN REAL LIFE, on recommendations, both for books as well as places to eat and bars and so on. Maybe that seems archaic to some, or old school, but I rather have a friend tell me in vivid detail over this new Greek restaurant that just opened than read a fukin review with a couple of arbitrary stars attached to it. Thats how we bond. The irony of it all is that SOCIAL media makes us anti-social. I hope you guys wake up, and good luck.

Yes but it's not only that, lack of religion is a bigger factor. For the most part only girls take social media seriously. I never got Instagram bc I think social media is dumb, all I have is ******** and SC if you consider that, and some girls look at me now like I'm from Mars when I say I don't. Might get one just to not phuk it up with girls srs. I absolutely hate hanging out with girls and they're looking at Instagram or watching dumb cat videos on FB or some chit.

Life has devolved into trying to make it appear you have 'made it' via social media and competing with peers.
brb go out with a group of people, everyone is constantly on their phone. Check their social media and it looks like they were having a -great- time when it was actually quite boring.
If everyone is going to be glued to their phone I'd rather opt out of 'going out to play on phone', to instead stay at home and play on computer.

No, I don't think social media is ruining our society. It certainly has changed society but not ruined it.
What's more annoying are the judgmental *******s who act as if they're enlightened because they "don't use social media just for attention" or don't use social media at all, and claim that people who do use social media only do it for attention and have forgot how to live in the moment and that type of dumb chit. They're just projecting their own thoughts on social media onto others. Literally everytime there's a discussion on social media, everyone starts to claim that they're different and "don't use social media that way" etc. lmao.

I agree with everything CougarP01 if you are looking at things from a person who is say above the age of 21. If you look at things from a viewpoint of say a teenager though, or even younger - absolutely, I believe it is ruining society and causing all kinds of problems that most of us on here don't even appreciate, as we grew up in a different generation. I can't imagine what it would be like to be a young teenager in the society of today. Young children are going to feel incredibly isolated and alienated if they don't fit in, way more so than in the past. There is no hiding place these days and you just have to hope you are lucky enough to be accepted. Everything will be magnified, the top ranked kids will have it ten times easier than us 80's and 90's kids did, and the lower ranked ones will have it ten times harder. Heaven help the ones who have it hardest of all. I really wouldn't want to bring up a child in the world we now live in.
