The problem is that even with a diagnosis - which this guy likely had due to his known encounters with the mental health system and a long history of brushes with the law - unless it rises to the level that a court specifically has to address your mental illness, usually by ordering you into care against your will, you're still eligible.

As a society, it's my opinion that we've swung the pendulum on mental illness too far in one direction. Deinstitutionalization, for example, was well-intentioned and, contrary to what the left will tell you, bipartisan. It aligned with Republicans because the mental health system was expensive, but it also addressed a real civil rights issue of people being confined in poor conditions with little recourse. However, it's also created a very serious situation where you're forcing people to integrate into society who often aren't cut out for it, and there are no alternatives for protecting them and others. What we've got in place is completely overwhelmed.

In this case, and in the case of a lot of other mass shooters in recent years, this is somebody who provided all the hooks society needed to grab him at some point and say "nope, not you, you can't pass a background check". Everybody knows he's weird and dangerous, and he's created tangible situations that you can point to and say "it's time to force him to get help", but the tools don't exist. There's nothing to do about it.
Nah, fukk that. I’m not doing that.

need stricter laws to buy guns

no mental illnesses
no virgins
no FA's
references to prove non virgin and FA status

this will prevent 99% of mass shootings and 70% of miscers from buying a gun

The reality is bad guys can still get their hands on guns relatively easy, and it's not like you can call "timeout" and resume the crime once the cops get there.
But the stats don't lie? Most similar countries to the US with strict gun laws such as Australia or UK doesn't have anywhere near as much gun crimes. So obviously this argument of "bad people will still find guns" doesn't show. I mean, even terrorists have had to resort to running people over with vans and stabbing them with knives here in London.

And overall crime has increased substantially in Australia since the gun ban in 1997. But let’s ignore that part.

Luckily in America we have the 2nd amendment. And it protects us from people that want to take our right away to protect ourselves. The real solution is to get rid of gun free zones and institute national reciprocity.

Gun crimes in areas with a lot of guns and CCW holders is much lower than in gun free zones in the US.

Logic over emotion.

Bias stats are bias? I mean, really, you act surprised that where there are more guns, more of the crime is committed with a gun?

I know you will ignore these facts once more, but why don't you take a look at Australia's violent crime rate before and after their sweeping gun bans...and look at the US violent crime rate compared to gun ownership.

Nobody GAF if your little island of subjects has a hard time getting guns

Fun fact gun crimes in UK have increased since 2014 and there are more guns in Aus now than before the gun ban

Does anyone actually disagree with this?

Is there anyone out there that thinks that restricting gun sales to at-risk people (ie. stricter security checks etc.) is a bad idea?

Because it's America. Psychotic fcks are an intrinsic part of your culture, and addressing it would require addressing the severe faultlines running through your culture. Americans do not want to address the true issues any more than Japan wants to talk about Unit 731, or Turks want to talk about the Armenian genocide.

The issue of gun control is in the US a Maltese Falcon; it is not the real story, it is simply a tool used to advance other stories, for example Dem vs Rep.

So he was not a "white nationalist"? Because news sources in Australia are going on about it as if it's unquestionably legitimate.

If it's fake then that is truly phucked that the news are running with it like they are.

I find it mind numbingly idiotic that it's so hard to rent a damn car that you need a freakin license in good standing, you need to be a certain age in most states 25 or over and some places even run freaking credit checks... YET a pimple faced 19 year old punk can walk into a shop pickup a lethal AR-15 and walk out the next day. WTF??? This is insanity to me. I'm all for owning guns be we need to make it a LOT harder to get semi automatics.

Guns are illegal in Mexico and look at all the gun violence they have. Guns are legal in Switzerland and they don't have nearly as much gun crime as the US.

Anyways, one of my co-workers that's an older OG gangster type of guy was telling me yesterday that back when he was in high school all the students brought guns to school and no one ever shot the school up.

My high school was like this in deer country back up until Columbine. Kids would get a truck and the first thing they'd do is install a gun rack in the back window. Zero fuarks given. Everybody carried a pocket knife, too.

There is no legal requirement that you be 25 to rent a car. That is a policy many rental agencies have and most, IME, simply charge you more if you are under 25.

You are surprised some places might run a credit check before they hand you the keys to a car worth tens of thousands of dollars? lol

I think you mean walk out the same day BTW, not the next day.

No, you are not all for owning guns. And, no, we don't need to make semi autos harder to get.

How do you determine who is "at risk"?

What happens to those people?

Do they go to prison?

There are 400 mn guns in the United States. There are an infinite number of other, effective means to kill people.

I think that anyone you wouldn't hand a gun to doesn't belong free in our society. I think that basic gun competence should be taught in schools (How to not shoot yourself, not marksmanship) and that we need to start removing from our society people who are too dangerous to possess arms.

To buy or receive a handgun or an "other" from a federally licensed firearms dealer (all stores or businesses where you can get a gun are one of these) you must be 21. To buy or receive a rifle or shotgun from an FFL you must be 18. This is a federal thing applying to all licensed firearms dealers. On a related note, thevastmajority of violent crimes and murders committed with a firearm are handguns. Very, very few are rifles.

Shooter was 19, ergo, he could legally buy a rifle from an FFL, but not a handgun

(private party transfers vary by state, but there is no federal restriction prohibiting the purchase or acquisition of a handgun by somebody under 21, and in some states you can in fact legally carry a handgun at 18)

My point is a car is harder to rent than buying a damn AR-15 for a kid. That makes no sense to me. I wonder if you would have such a dogmatic stance if you were a parent in a situation like now in FL. And if you have any answer besides no we can't make it harder to get semi automatics.
