Most people are dumb as bricks and expect you to seek help for yourself when you finally tell them. Yeah, no chance am I gonna go schedule an appointment with some stupid ass therapist or w/e who engaged in the exact type of immoral behavior that makes me want to kill myself while in college getting their degree. I rather die.

Purely hypothetical, don't report me lol

I understand to some extent why people do it. Depression is real, and with complicating factors (divorce, child support, debt, whatever else) it makes life hard. For me it comes in waves, most of the time I'm okay, once in a while I just want to end. For a long while I felt awful every day. It was a struggle. I'm still here because I believe it doesn't end the pain, it just transfers it to someone else-family and friends. I don't keep firearms in my place anymore because it's much more likely I'll make a bad decision in a moment of weakness than defend myself.

Antidepressants are pretty brutal sometimes, they have a "black-box warning" which means it may make you more likely to attempt suicide. I tried several before I found one that didn't make me feel worse, and now I feel almost robotic- not too low, not too high, not too interested in much.

I dunno brahs, life is kinda hard, and suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the USA. So it's definitely a big issue, but almost taboo to discuss openly.

Exercise has been most helpful for me in dealing with it. But the thought of 50 more years of "same chit different day" gets to me sometimes.

Gotta spread some rep, but good message. The best friend I ever had killed himself a year ago. Had a wife, kids, good life, etc. Devastated everyone he knew. I'm still devastated.

That's so tough, man. I'm sorry for your loss. I recently found out a girl I used to see took her life due to postpartum following her second child. Some training partners know her husband well and the damage done was absolutely devastating.

a coupme years ago, a family member that i owe my current life to, took his own in a gruesome manner. he talked to my old man a couple days prior and said there were people after him. schizophrenic most likely, but due to idiotic old school parents they never got him treatment even though they were wealthy.

then had someone on my wifes side take her life as well. also schizophrenic. not sure wtf is going on, but seems odd. unless its common and i never knew about it until it hit close to home.

i know we all pretend to be manly men on here, but get help if you can depressed bros.
i get minor bouts, and being around others or at least being outside helps a lot.

Sorry to hear that man. I know that feeling. Experienced it with a coworker over this past holiday season.

Never saw it coming as well. Us at work, his friends and family.......... He was a happy and fun guy. Only 20 years old

It was tough to deal with. I cried a whole lot for a week or two. Still think about it when I'm feeling down.

Everyone goes through the process differently. I'd say don't try to go through it alone. Share any good time or memory you had of him with others.

It feels like young men today are pretty depressed. I admit that I also feel down a lot of the time, but overall I don't think I it would be fair to say I have depression. I am 100% serious when I am saying that I two male friends that have talked to me about considering suicide. Obviously it wasn't like a complete therapy session, but what I got out of our talks were that their family problems were major factors. Both of them have divorced parents AND both parents remarried (so kind of like 2 set of parents?). This led to feelings of "Was I the reason they divorced?" or "Why do my parents have to be separated everyone else I know is fine?" since they were young. One of them said he felt like killing someone that had annoyed him (he had to go to therapy) and seems to have improved now. The other says he feels emotionless when bad chit happens, like when his aunt or cat died, he didn't cry at all.

So for me, when I ever think the thought: "I'm so depressed", I retract myself and I think that my idea of depression is a slap to the face of people who have actually experienced something traumatizing or terrible. Even if you are feeling down, this doesn't stop you from finding positives in your own life. Like in my case, I'm thankful my parents never fought to an extreme extent and how I have my health and a roof over my head, and so on.

there was a guy from our gym who didnt seem like he'd take his own life but you knew he was struggling with stuff. a friend said he had a nagging shoulder inury & i guess there were other things on his mind. same friend said he saw him the night before he took his own life & he seemed fine. just crazy. seems the only fail-safe way is to ask if there's any hint at all someone is down

adding my name to the list as well

edit: compounding the issue is the military's pi$$ poor job of handling stuff like this. first and only time i ever went to a military psych doc, unauthorized disclosure to someone outside my chain of command that got around to a couple other folks. absolutely fking floored me. never will do again. thats also part of the problem.

we as veterans deal with this at an alarming rate yet the first thing they tell you to do, in the USAF, if someone comes to you with bad thoughts, is to report them. but as someone who has got reported by a fellow sgt once who didnt even bother to ask wtf was going on, i lost all trust in the system.

Principle of my high school took his own life the year after i left. Very upbeat jovial guy, everyone disliked the vice principles but genuinely liked him. Was an accomplished olympic wrestler in his younger days and did a good job at the school. Then one day he was escorted out of the school and 2 weeks later the news broke. Still dont know what happened/what was going on with him

I feel like a lot of people in my generation and the one to come are suffering through depression a lot more than back in the old days with you guys.

I honestly have no idea why. I myself went through a bit of a down/depressed stage for a few couple of months about two years ago and felt like I didn't really have a purpose or anything to set me out apart from everyone else. People talked chit to me, and I was tired of all the "popular" kids taking all the spotlight at school. Nobody ever seemed to respect me as a person and looked down on me condescendingly when they talked for some reason.

Lifting gave me that purpose and a passion and it's since then resolved most of that for me. I might have some nights here or there where I'll lay in bed thinking of all that horrible ****. I guess it's just the feeling of feeling like we're not loved/being neglected most of the time but it is more of an impulse reaction rather than a rational one.

Nice job raising awareness with this thread. PM me if you're a lurking miscer and you need any emotional help with this ****. We can work it out together.

Its always the ones that seem the happiest. Robin Williams being a prime example.

I recall a day back in 9th grade, a girl went missing for a few days and when she was found it turned out she committed suicide. She was always laughing and a generally upbeat girl. Not a member of the popular crowd, but she was well liked by her own group.

A lot of people don't realize the chit these junior high/high school teens go through. We think they have it easy when in reality many of them deal with a whole truckload of things. There's bullying, home problems, stress from being busy, etc. I went through a super dark stage pretty much from ages 13-18 where I was depressed often and hated myself. Was fat, short, got bullied a lot, turned down by the girls I liked, shy, all the typical loser chit you hear about. Looking back, none of it was a huge deal but at the time it feels like the weight of the world. Luckily I was able to turn all of those negatives around but it took time. If I didn't have the support of my family who the hell knows where I could've been. Thats why its always smart to ask for help, some of these kids aren't lucky enough to have family like that and they just bottle it all up till it explodes.
Strong mind, strong body.

I'm really sorry to hear that man. Very depressing to hear youth ending it so early in life.

I honestly have been very down. Very depressed more than I have ever been. And to he honest suicidal thoughts have entered my mind. I am not as serious as a case as some that have, I could never go through with it. But I had been questioning my will to live with just looking at all the failures that have added up.

I have never had a social network of friends to rely on. I had a best friend 5 plus years ago but we bumped heads and I cut him out of my life as he was a negative and brought me down for years so I told myself I would eliminate any negative vibes in my life. But he was the only real friend I had. Now I have nobody. My 40th birthday is coming up and I have nobody to celebrate it with. Birthdays have always been a lonely and depressing time for me for as long as I can remember.

Than there are other bad things. Work has been terrible and haven't had anything that pays much. I'm pretty much broke because of bad financial decisions combined with unreliable work. And a few days before christmas I was involved in a collision. My vehicle was written off and still in the process of buying another vehicle however due to bills being behind I already spent some of that settlement money from my insurance. So I cant even get as good as a vehicle right now. Life is really **** right now. Somehow I am trying to remain positive but nothing has gone my way in this life. When I originally was hit in the accident I did have thoughts wishing it was much worse.

It's always so shocking because not everyone even shows an ounce of a sign they might be depressed. I knew a girl in highschool who did this. She was always very social, had friend and was a cheerleader. She also did very well in school. She just kept her demonds to herself and a few months before graduation she committed suicide. 10 years ago mental illnesses were stigmatized but I'm glad times are changing and hopefully people will find it easier to seek help as time goes.

Always used to wonder how people could do it but honestly as I’ve gotten older and experienced sh*t times I kind of get it.

Not saying I condone it or would ever do it myself no matter how rock bottom I got, but life really sucks ass big time.

Not depressed but life has definitely been a bit of a disappointment. I just expected better. Even a best case scenario where you have a good job and don’t have to worry about money you still just work your life away for a few moments each week to enjoy life if you’re lucky. That’s f*cking depressing as f*ck.

Now spin in to the worst case scenario, you’re broke as f*ck slaving away doing all you can to keep your head above water with no friends or family who care about you..... yeah I can see how people might just get fed up with it and check out at pretty much any stage.

But at the end of the day you just have to ask yourself if you’re gonna let life win that easily. I’m a competitive person so f*ck that is rather live miserably if I have to but not going out quitting.

I do understand why more the older I get though.
"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

"Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem"

That quote hits hard
"They'll tell you failure is not an option. That is ridiculous. Failure is always an option. Failure is the most readily available option at all times, but it's a choice. You can choose to fail or you can choose to succeed. But failure is always there, and it's okay to recognize that."- Chael P. Sonnen

Never had to deal with depression/suicide, but I imagine you have to feel pretty ****ing terrible about life to end it. Very sad. What's scary is that an individual can hide it so well.. like you said this guy always had a smile on his face.

Whoa, a lot to take in here.

This part is something I would rethink a bit. I understand on a deep level this feeling and it's something I have battled with so so many times myself. I have tried to change the mindset slightly when looking at failures; they are step forward each time because we learn. When you're in it, it's awful, painful and it sucks but when you have applied what you learned and what you can take from it...pretty powerful IMO.

I'm saying this from the position of someone that is in a positive spot TODAY but tomorrow might be different. I know how many bad days I have left on this earth, I do not know how many good ones I have left so I have to make each one count.

Stay up, man.

It’s a weird topic in that it forces us to attempt to apply rational thinking to an irrational action. The movie The Bridge where people are jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge made a comment that every single person that survives the attempt says the same thing; “it was instant regret”.

I had a patch where I thought about it daily and it consumed me...to the point where I would picture a bullet placing through my brain stem erasing all of what I carried in my divorce in the early stages. I sold my conceal carry because I recognized I couldn’t have it any longer; I had planned to kill the guy my ex messed with to the point where I was days from it and I knew I wasn’t responsible enough to maintain that so it had to go...thankfully I worked through it but I know many don’t.

not a bad point. I was an awful child in middle school, and I'm sure I beat the self esteem down on a lot of other kids. I cringe when I think of how I would roast everyone. I know why I was like that though, so you live & learn.

That quote hits hard
Retarded quote as chemical imbalance could be a permanent problem.. I think there's ways to fix chemicals imbalance through trial in error in diet, exercise or worst case scenario pills.. But people going through that probably don't have patience for that chit..

My cousin committed suicide on Christmas Eve. He had some poor choices in the his life which made my family resent him but I always saw some good in him as I grew up with him and spent most of my teens with him. He thought he had no one left. If anyone is depressed please talk to someone, even if you think you have no one there is always someone willing to help you through this.

Glad you didn’t do it, man...

A comedian recently said “whatever someone that had a death of someone they were close to does for the next 6 months...just give them a pass...they aren’t in the right state”. This is within reason of course but ugh...
