I'd say there's probably some truth to this.
Ahhhh fuk bye!

I do have self esteem issues from childhood and beyond is the major reason I gym/run 5 days a week.

I'm not talking about the average gym goers who will go on some machines, run on a treadmill and be gone, I'm talking about dedicated gym goers who spend 10 hours+ a week at the gym, meal prep, and basically plan their whole schedule around lifting. First off, very few normal people dedicate so much time doing the same thing over and over again, so you know that most serious lifters are gonna be on the autism spectrum somewhere.

Body dysmorphia seems to be common among both males and females, for instance. It's really not uncommon to meet people who are in the best shape of their life, and complain that they look like chit, even though they look better naked than over 90% of people.

Met this one guy who is so jacked that his arms will stretch out an oversized hoodie, and he can't wear anything but sweatpants or they will rip. Yet, he has the body language and confidence of a 15 year old, 110 lbs boy, it's quite interesting.

A lot of jacked or strong guys in particular don't know how to socialize, or talking with them feels like a challenge. It seems like the stronger a dude is, the poorer his social skills will be. I feel like for a lot of them, they need to be jacked because it covers their lack of social skills.

Two guys I know at my gym have actually been diagnosed with Asperger's, though they are high-functioning.

As for the girls, the dedicated ones without a doubt have serious insecurity issues once you get to know them. One that I know has insane anger problems. Another that I know lives off of Instagram likes and men admiring her in her revealing outfits, and she'll feel ugly if she doesn't get any of those.

Not hating towards anyone who has mental health problems or people who lift seriously, but it's just something I noticed.
A few things. When I first did the heavy gym thing, I did have body dismorphia. I had a very visible four pack and sharp jaw line, visible veins in my chest and I felt fat at a teen size 4.

This time around, I think I can better appreciate my body. I don't have insecurity issues because I am older and wiser and realize I am God's creation and therefore a masterpiece. Self esteem starts with HIM.

I think you make some interesting observations, but think you put the cart before the horse. I think the lifestyle CAUSES the issues, not that people with those issues go to the lifestyle. For example, if you want to have a great body, you go to the gym and work toward it. But then during your quest, you read an article about wider lats and suddenly, that's a thing you think you need to have. Or you feel strong and some dude on tech lifts double what you did and you suddenly feel weak. But certainly, a perfectionistic personality would be more willing than the general population to make the necessary changes to achieve the higher levels of fitness.

Or for us ladies, maybe you look so good you decide to enter a bikini competition. Suddenly you're very lean, toned body seems fat and flat compared to those stage bodies that are teched up and dehydrated to look abnormal.

The key is to stay grounded, appreciate the changes, set your healthy boundaries (no tech, no eating disorders, no figure competitions for me, etc.) and stop comparing yourself to the pros, or those farther along strength-wise.

That's my 2 cents.

So yes, I agree with OP that I'm not right in the head. But I'm using bodybuilding as a healthy release.
After thinking about it some more, I agree. What we do isn't "normal" behavior. I've just been doing it so long it seems as normal as brushing my teeth. Youre right, there's definitely worse paths I could have gone down.

That sort of serious **** tends to run in families. Arnold certainly impulse control issues, when it comes to sex. He was known as a giant douche and massively arrogant when young, and there are all sorts of stories said about him. I know someone who I have no reason to doubt who competed with him and told me how he almost got his head caved in several times for throwing his weight around in gyms in the UK before he moved over to the states. Someone who is like that is covering major insecurities. He fuked that maid, and basically ruined his own image that he had cultivated for years. . And frankly a man in his position can get someone to pull women for him for sex and no one would ever know.Instead he fuked some chubby maid. Those are not the actions of a man who is in complete control. When someone does something and you think WTF in your mind, that is a clear sign someone is a few cans short of a six pack.

And frankly I could write a book on the strangeness amongst some of the members in my gym, a hardcore bodybuilding gym. Not one of them has not cheated on his wife . Two have tried to kill themselves. one by hanging, actually tried to hang himself at home and the wife found him. I have a personality disorder and ptsd and am on a special register with the police due to violence , another guy has serious anger problems even at 50 years old, and threw a man through a shop window for bumping into him in the street,He is now recieving compulsory court ordered anger management counselling. Someone else is a heroin addict. We all have OCD. Yet ours is a gym where peoplecompete in bodybuildingand powerlifting. One guy competes all over the world in powerlifting meets. Another guy cannot go into a crowded place like a bar, last time he went in one he pulled a mans arm out of it's socket for bumping into him.Another guy everyone else thinks is a serial killer,he has been known to bring prostitutes into the gym to fuk them after work,if a woman even smiles at him,he will stalk her. Been to court over it.

I have been going to the gym atleast 4 times a week for past 4 years straight. My diet sucks and hence my lifts/looks but lifting dedication wise im in there consistently.
I have to agree i have issues. I think very few people grow up having no issues what so ever AND having issues doesnt mean you cant still ACE life in some aspects.

Like i did great in undergrad and am doing masters now with scholarship but yea god knows i have issues. By no means am i normal

Can confirm have a deep seated monster/energy inside on me I have to release. Played rugby and legit had some bad intentions and can run like an animal, never avoid contact . I stick to swimming and reading now, prefer that over lifting seeing as I donโ€™t play for anyone right now.

Have to agree,

That being said, everyone goes to the gym these days, but most look like chit or DYEL. If being on the autism spectrum helps with gains/motivation and the sense of a purpose, then so be it, however meaningless it might all be in the grand scheme of things at least serious lifters enjoy the process.

Actually spending time on something and getting nothing out of it like the general gym population you're referring to, is imo even worse. They could have spent that time on an activity they actually enjoy. Instead they choose to spend some of their free time driving to the gym in order to walk on a treadmill at 3mph or benching 135 into infinity.

They are just low self esteem, narcissistic losers. I'm starting to actually hate the lifting life because of what it has become, and how narcissistic it has made me. Just going to the gym makes me narcissistic because of all the egos in there. It's not the same as when i joined this site back in 2010.

I seriously don't understand the hot females that work out there 4 days a week. You would think they would have enough attention to stay away from the gym. Or at least go with other girls.....or go less.

The gym is basically a place for high functioning autistic people and people who have various mental problems. For me the lifestyle itself just added to my problems.

How do you not become narcissistic when you are bigger and stronger (and probably better looking) than most people though? Most people look horrible compared to anyone who has a couple years of lifting under their belt.

That's not good buddy..

Also normal people look at my dedicated routine and my successful studies and assume that I'm perfectly normal just extra dedicated....Jakes on them because I'm not normal at all and at some point I forced myself to work and gym rather than get sad about my social awkwardness and that in turn made me slightly less awkward.

I'm sure many have self esteem and control issues. and like you said, body dysmorphia for sure.

Because narcissism is a result of thinking youre better than you actually are and when the real world doesnt actually care or see you the way you tell yourself they do you develop a complex and start judging and putting everyone down in your mind to rationalize your own superiority. Most people who actually have a great physique develop a sense of pride in it and keep going and theyre confident and know what they are because their real world response reflects their perception of themself. Youve been lifting for 9 years and look like most people do less than a year in, you are not at that point. You just tell yourself you are.

By being humble and not a douche bag. Everyone starts somewhere with whatever activity, if you laugh and degrade said people you're a dick whether it be lifting or basket weaving. Stop worrying so much about other people and focus on yourself. When you're trying to point out other people's flaws you're really just insecure/let down with something about yourself in that department.

Definitely brah, the gym is really more like a special needs school. All the men are autistic and all the women are ugly and insecure.

What?

My girlfriend is a member of a running club, and those *******s invest a minimum of 10 hours per week, never mind when they drive 2 hours to do some race.

A lot of hobbies whether it be video games, running, lifting, watching tv takes up time... at least lifting gets you out of the house and keeps you fit.

There's non-lifters with aspergers too. Strong myopic focus of peace.
I agree with this. I think there are some people that clearly have issues who lift but I just don't see anything wrong or unhealthy with doing something I enjoy, that makes me feel and look good. It's much better than spending those 5-10 hours a week sitting on my ass in front of the tv eating junk.

This too.
