I'm pretty into high-end furniture and the craftsmanship that goes into it, but some of the Hermes stuff is way out there.

A king bed set runs about $1500, depending on the pieces you have in it.

Mattress, an okay mattress, let's say $1200.

Table and four chairs, $350.

Sofa, loveseat, decent....let's say $1200.

That's $4250. Add tax, let's say $4600. All you need is that point is plates, curtains, nick nacks and a few other things and you're good.

Yeah, their purses go for 10k. Just par for the course that a chair would cost the same.

Quality is an aspect of the price, but not everything. Hermes is a status symbol because of the exclusivity that comes along with the name. A branding that they've been doing for 100+ yrs by commanding a high price for consistently high quality.

If conditions are right, luxury goods will even increase in value with age. Making an investment or wealth retainer out of something that you're already going to buy. You won't get that from a locally made piece, however the quality.

No reason you have to buy particleboard. You can find decent real wood furniture that just needs some TLC or is out of style. Equivalent to buying a better quality used car vs. a new lower quality one. My sofa and chair are granny as heck and faded but they are well made from a US company that makes quality custom furniture.

$7800 is crazy for normal people. Normal isn't their market though. I don't have a problem with spending on good quality if you have it to spend. Most of what is sold in the big furniture stores now is poorly made stuff from China bought cheap, sold at a big markup, financed for the long term but only built for temporary use.

FWIW best pickings are usually estate sales and/or nice neighborhoods. My living room set came from an older couple that were selling the big house and downsizing...was a beautiful house.

Mattresses are one big thing I won't shop second hand for. Oh...and shoes/socks/underwear...ick.
