Mirin that hustle. But really, that's sad to hear. I was honestly shocked when I found out that one of my friend's sister and boyfriend aren't going to marry each other. They are together and have two kids too. My friend told me that they BOTH thought marriage was just a waste of money and didn't want to marry if they loved each other. They found it pointless. It was surprising to hear since marriage is so common in the US.
All these stories are making me a bit nervous. As a man, I don't really benefit financially unless my wife is loaded. I'll be down for more equality in divorces, but women would fight that endlessly, even when they want muh equality!

In all honesty it's usually the partner that is the homemaker that comes out behind because the one that makes the most money can afford the better lawyer. Rarely ever is it the so called 50/50 assets divided split everybody talks about. Usually it's the spouses with lawyers mediating what assets go to who until they agree.

Now I know, if or whenever I get married, my earned income from my job is the only thing that'll be known to my wife. My 401k or variant will be my second line of disclosed information IF she asks about it, but I will try to play it down or make it intentionally slightly above mediocre.
My self-managed investments through multiple brokerage accounts wont be known to her and I'll fight tooth and nail to hide it. Would rather see it all go red from a down market instead of handing over a single dollar in profit in divorce court.

No idea about the UK, but in the US alimony (what there is of it) has changed a lot. Much of the time there is no alimony paid (spouses with roughly equal salaries or short duration marriages) and when it is paid it is almost always for a limited period of time. It is supposed to give the lower earning spouse or homemaker time to increase their income. A lot of states it is set at something like 1 year of support for every 3 years of marriage so if you divorced after 15 years you would pay/receive alimony for 5 years. In some states you don't get any real consideration of alimony for a marriage under 10 years.
