Sometimes that's all you need.

Personally, don't really have a "budget" just make sensible decisions daily, contribute to a 401K, and track all of my accounts. But that tracking keeps me paying attention and constantly thinking "do i need to buy this."

So youre making what 1 to 200 a week?

By 18 labor laws are different and you can work 40 hours a week. Where did you work here?

Even if you go to community college youre looking at 20k a year for a state college for junior and senior year. So, 40k..and you would have used all of what you saved up

So, youre at 0 in the bank and most likely a new job. Or maybe not a new job.. But only way i see that is if you live with your parents. But you still prob dont have enough for a house

Also, lets be real.. Poor homes are very tumultuous. You think poor people are really happy go lucky? Which would affect grades throughout all of that

Not saying your story is not doable but im sensing some padding youre prob not going into
You can believe whatever you want. I had a part time job at 14 and worked that until I went to college. To put myself through college I joined the military for GI bill and also busted my ass and wound up getting a full scholarship. None of that was given to me, nor did I have to "get lucky". It's just a matter of hard work.

Engineering degree + being smart with money and house is paid off.

I'm not going to go into detail of every $$ inflow and outflow I ever had just to prove to you it can be done.

Im just saying. I worked minimum wage at 18 and worked with lots of kids that were 16

Those kids are your idealistic poor people; whom make poor decisions. But its no stretch to assume their parents are dikholes. Which means if theyre working theyre prob spending their money because their parents wont give it to them

Most of the kids at 16 spent every cent of the paycheck they had

A) they were dumb
B) life sucked (chitty job, tumultuous home)
C) they wanted an escape

Pretty sure itโ€™s already established that most people are not bright or financially responsible. That does not mean that itโ€™s right, also doesnโ€™t mean that it should be tolerated and expected. Expectations breed reality.

Lmao you have some affiliation with vox huh?

Like i said, its also a good bet that if your parents are poor theyre prob an alcoholic or on drugs.. Which would compound the poorness + put you in the home around that (away from work)

At least, most of the people i knew whom were working at 16. Which seems to fit the mold

Inadequate parents ----> forcing kids to work

All im saying is there is more to the process

Also, not poor. And family definitely isnt poor. Just went through it

You sound like you love making excuses for people. Parents won't give them money to spend? That's not a necessity to do well in school or creating goals and following through with them. I worked as a busboy at 14 and continued at least part-time 20-30 hours each year after turning 16.

I stare at his pecs every time I see his avi, mad?

In all seriousness, I think the culture of making excuses for your situation and accepting complacency needs to stop. Change can only happen if you reshape your expectations for yourself and for those around you. If you accept the status quo (which is in shambles), we as a society would never improve. Instead, identify problems, determine the appropriate actions to mitigate or prevent, then act.

Guarantee you sitting around making excuses for people wonโ€™t help them get out of their situation.

Im not making excuses. Im just not downplaying the severity

It means you grow up in a tumultuous home. Doing math homework when mom and dad are fighting vs. When everything is fine is different

As i said. I worked minimum wage at 18. Didnt get money from parents. Parents didnt pay taxes so i couldnt get a loan

So i was 18 and looking at paying for college tuition. So, what do you do with low skills and looking at thousands in tuition? Legit, answer that question. What would you do? Youre not considered "independent" until your 24 for financial aid. So thats not an option

At 40 hours a week i made 250 dollars a week. I spent at least 40 in gas a week. So thats 210. 50 in groceries.. Leaving you with 160 as of right now

Phone bills
Utilities
Rent
Car
Car insurance
Clothes??

Luckily, i didnt have to pay rent. I wouldnt have been able to

But i went through that for 2 years. And it was fuken miserable

Luckily i grew up affluent. So i knew i had options. But for people who grew up that way? No chance

I found out just why poor people turn to criminal behavior. Or drugs or alcohol as i said

What you originally said was that I was lying. Now you're changing your premise to "poor people can't get ahead because they're dumb and make bad decisions".

Anyway, my original response was merely to illustrate that you don't have to "be lucky for 20 years" to get ahead if you weren't born into money. Plenty of people have come to this country with nothing and made something of themselves. As have people born into less than perfect circumstances.

Considering most americans believe that owning a mortgage on a home is somehow an "asset", yes I definitely believe the article.

The majority of people in this country aren't educated on basic finance or don't care. There's a reason we have by far the largest consumer market in the world. Our economy relies on dumb consumers who spend endlessly.

This. It just takes a little smarts and good discipline, and that doesn't mean never go on vacation and never spend money. I save a pretty decent amount for your average single guy, even with a roughly $600 a month loss on my house in Virginia I rent out (keeping for long term benefit, don't need the cashflow right now). If i could have that amount back every month for the last 5 years, i'd have a stupid amount of savings. Nowhere near on that ceo 10k/day. I see couples that make what i do, and in a lot of cases more, who seem to be broke constantly.

You don't have to "be lucky for 20 years".

My parents didn't have much money. I've had a job since I was 14, put myself through college and within a couple years of graduating I was financially secure enough that I could go for at least 6 months without employment. I bought my first house at age 25 and fully paid off my current house last year.

If you're not pretty financially secure by 30, you're doing it wrong.
What's your definition of financially secure? Like rich or comfortable or what?

I am not surprised.

My co-workers blow all their money on over-priced sporting tickets and wasteful ****.
