There's no preparation necessary, just needs to be in it's packaging to be safe.

Food has to be prepared safely, and in this instance also held safely = many more variables/potential hazards.

Whether it is packaged or not is irrelevant to my point. Permits don't do chit to protect you and they're completely unnecessary in most cases.

The real point is you have no idea what you're talking about, which is why you were comparing prepackaged food to food that has to be prepared and held within certain guidelines.

Those guidelines aren't there just because, they literally exist to keep people safe by minimizing the likelihood of foodborne illness.

The permit doesn't protect you, the guidelines being followed, which govern whether or not you get the permit are there to protect you.

Kinda like a kid wanting to learn to drive has to have a permit to demonstrate a basic understanding of the rules of the road.

If not for that let's just let anybody drive a car, BRB "Hey you're blind? **** it, here go the keys to a car, just don't hurt anybody".

This. Restaurants have permits and how often do they see the inspector? Yes, they're going to keep it mostly clean and tidy, to avoid possible fines, but it's all just paper and revenue to be had for the city. More revenue, and more government jobs. And more jobs for lawyers. A terrible cycle of plunder.

Yup... you are brainwashed to the nanny state. I've worked in quite a few heavily regulated industries. Someone being licensed or having a permit means jack chit. That stuff usually only comes into question when someone is trying to be a dick, someone didn't get paid off, or after an incident (the most common). Have you even sat through a food/health/handling course ... it's a joke. No different that driving courses, chemical, heavy equipment, etc... all jokes.

It's also not fair for one kid to be able to afford school clothing, and another kid not.

My wife and I had our honeymoon in Peru, and it's a relatively poor country so they can't afford unemployment benefits and the like - but anyone can get a burner, a pot and some corn, set themselves up on a corner and sell boiled corn on the cob. It occurred to us:

In Australia, government helps but it doesn't get out of the way. Peru's not got the money to pay people to do nothing; their government can't help, so it gets out of the way.

Honestly, either one works. If government requires endless permits and sht but just throws money at you, that works. If government won't give you a cent but lets you do whatever you like so long as it doesn't directly hurt someone else, that works, too. Whatdoesn'twork is when government will neither help nor get out of the way.

So, for this kid:

Permits required PLUS free school clothes ---> that works
No permits PLUS no free school clothes ---> that works
BUT
Permits required PLUS no free school clothes ---> STUPID

You can say that government must look after the welfare of society and so permits and health inspections are required, but then, since you care about the welfare of society, a kid needs clothes for school, so pay up; OR you can say that people have to take care of themselves, and so there's no free clothes for school, but you have no permits and inspections, either.

But you can't claim to be all caring about the welfare of society so OMG inspections because what about safe food handling and all that?! and then when a kid has no clothes for school say, "fck him." That doesn't work.

Either be a nanny state or be all libertarian about things. Either works, but it's one or the other, make up your mind.

In other words: America. LOL.

Uhh wut? Have you looked at your local dept of health website? That chit should be public info. Every restaurant I care about has a public record of when the inspector has visitor (minimum once per year, more for follow ups) and what they got slammed for. A restaurant I enjoy I just learned recently got inspected, the "person in charge" (aka owner or duty supervisor) couldn't explain to the inspector the why hand sanitation was important, the other severe violation was the guy making sushi didn't use gloves and only rinsed his hands with cold water (no soap) after using the restroom. Other restaurants have other violations, typically storing food improperly (it seems almost universal). At least in my state, that chit is 100% not a waste of taxpayer money.

Ranging from 50-150 plus bucks and tons of hours required to for the permit.

In Australia, that's because hairdressers handle poisonous and caustic chemicals. They can literally burn your skin off if they get it wrong. Barbers don't need that permit, but barbers can't colour your hair.

It's like the difference between riding a pushbike and driving a car; the greater the possibility of harming others, the more likely it is someone wants to regulate it, to require that you prove you know WTF you're doing.

There are permits and bullchit for just about anything. In Oregon you need a permit to collect your own rain water. Like i said earlier, most of this stuff is simply meant to limit competition by making entry into the market unattainable.
