I know a few with expensive cars, they simply are loaded. If you can easily afford a 100k$ car, why not?

How many people do you think post stupid chit for validation from other people?

...and seriously, once you've driven even a moderately nice car for a while (BMW, MB, Audi, etc) it's tough to go back to a Nissan Maxima or something. It's like flying 1st Class for the first time... tough to go back to coach.

Some people truly do have "money to burn" levels of money. Most everyone else has debts up to their eyeballs and a $100k car is a stupid financial decision but one that's too hard to resist for people who care a lot about their "image" and what people think of them.

Because regardless of how much money you have, there's a ton of better uses for $100k than a money pit $100k car.

The worst are people that in no way financially should be owning a luxury vehicle. A lot of people that work at our plant have pretty nice cars. Keep in mind, they are making anywhere from 9-$18.00/hr and feed off perceived validation and trying to make others believe they've "made it", tet constantly complain about money issues. Then you have myself and 3 other engineers that drive 8-10+ year old vehicles. We make good money, but would rather invest the money in ourselves first (stocks, properties, education, other investments) before spending it on depreciating, consumer goods for the temporary validation high it brings. Will I have a nice car someday, sure, but I'd rather build up a solid net worth and invest in my future first.

Most financially successful people invest in themselves before they pay others. That $500 monthly payment can easily turn into a million dollars by the time you retire.

Jay Leno had a Rambo Lambo on his show a few years back. One of those luxury 4x4 Lambo off road things built in the 80s for oil sheikhs and the like. The appraiser told him each tire was $2000. When Jay commented on that, the appraiser replied: "If Sir is concerned about the price of the tires this is not the car for Sir to own".

For me and probably you $100k is way too much for a car... tho my wife's last car came close. For other people who are enthusiasts it might be worthwhile... and there ARE people for whom $100k is pocket change.

Will I have a nice car someday, sure, but I'd rather build up a solid net worth and invest in my future first.

...and the people who have already done that? Should they wait for you to catch up before buying THEIR cars?

Yeah but I thought we were talking on a general population basis, of whom 99% have no business spending $100k on a personal vehicle.

On a general basis, for most people, spending a lot of money on cars is about trying to show status above all else. When I was younger I worked at a factory where most of the production workers were making $14-$17 at the time. The amount of drama that would ensue when one of them went out and bought a $20k-$30k vehicle that was beyond their budget was just crazy. The women there (most of whom knew NOTHING about cars) would gossip about that crap all day long.

Humans will forever seek validation.

Seeking confirmation from others is how we evolve and grow collectively, but when you do it too much it's a problem. If you have the money for a car, you're usually going to buy a nice one based on your own decision but you will always seek validation from others to confirm you made a correct decision - whether it's a car, girlfriend, clothes, muscles, etc. if you can't admit that then you're just lying to yourself or a psychopath.

But... but he ENJOYS it!!! There's no way he bought that lifted truck in hopes of getting attention from others!! You can't just expect him to go from first class like that back to coach now, so now he NEEDS that lifted truck regardless of what he uses it for!

Buying super cars / other high performance vehicles and never stretching their legs on the track is pretty silly IMO and maybe is for attention. At least luxury cars are enjoyable on a few different levels and have a range of features that cheaper and older cars won’t have


Attention would just get annoying tho and you can hear as much from people who own Lambos, Ferrari’s, etc. It wouldn’t be fun having a bunch of slack jawed miscers gawking when you drive and bugging you when you stop for gas

I was legit driving an astro van from like 2010-2013. It was actually a good way to meet fun people because they all assumed I was a funny guy and the people that thought it was funny were fun to be around.

i like having both

i had a 1997 chitbox subaru impreza that i would drive to work the majority of the time while my audi sat in the garage to be taken out on days i felt like it. i'm a car enthusiast though


i think if you have the money to afford a luxury car then i see no issue. some people enjoy comfort. you'd want a comfortable bed, and a nice living arrangement too, wouldn't you?

but to op's point, I lol when people buy a brand new accord or something and talk about its "features", or how "advanced" it is

Not sure what you are talking about.

I drove 2002 Honda Accord Coupe v6 for 6 years and now have been driving 2015 Mustang GT for about 3.5 years and its night and day difference as far as performance and how fun it is to drive. To be fair the first one automatic and the Mustang is a manual so that may have alot to do with it.

Also just because someone doesnt work on their cars or doesnt take it to track doesnt mean they dont love cars. I watch car youtube channels all the time literally watched every salomondrin and stradman video for past 4 years and would rather watch their content then most movies that come out.

I cringe every time, extra cringe if the thing is fwd or some tonka-toy 4x4. The misc is the worst for this with their german repmobiles, not sure I should be surprised given the status anxiety among people here is even more of an epidemic than the general population.

I admire legitimate badass machinery, as in, oh cool, it can do that, such engineering, etc. But it doesn't impress me if you own one.
