Let ME be anal retentive and ask you this: How many books are in the old testament, and how many of them deal with law and wisdom. To my knowledge, there's 4 books on wisdom, which are: Psalms, proverbs, Ecclesiastes, song of Solomon and one book that focuses on law - Leviticus. There are the 5 books of moses which are considered 'the law', but these are not focused on just law.

That's ~5 books out of 39. The rest are tales of a people - history.

The metaphors you mention, as being borrowed, I wonder if your thinking/references of the parables primarily from the new testament. The old testament isn't written like that. And just because there are various peoples that witnessed historical happenings, doesn't mean they borrowed anything. 'Borrowed' is a strong oversimplified word that carries more than just a statement but an inference as to your obvious reservations, if not bigotry toward people who believe the Bible to be a dependable source of information. At least that's my observation of your charade of enlightened words.

The Bible stood the test of time, and the overall essence of scripture is still the same, even among most of the denominations. That's pretty miraculous considering any other texts dont have such exhausted verification like the manuscripts of the bible and even still, the exactness doesn't change the overall religious tone (essence over substance). When historical comparisons of the bible are drawn, it holds consistency - so its verifiable outside of just the internal claims its making.

In academia, i reckon anyone that didn't recognize the historical significance of the bible, as being a history book, might just be frowned upon. Does it mean they believe the miraculous things that happened? No it doesn't necessarily mean that. Genesis and some of the earlier accounts may in fact be summaries/allegory of a type, and their exactness isn't the point to dwell on. Really, the take away is that something happened that was significant for humanity.

That's not to say all of genesis can be reduced to being nothing but an allegory. Some Christians take the genesis account as the innerant word of God, whatever that means, and run with it to setup a bad argument, that everything in scriptures must be literally/obviously true because 'verses'. Its a false dichotomy that probably sours some academics taste for viewing scripture. I cant blame them, but they need to realize its just some zealots selling an idea of Christianity rather than Christianity.
