Plenty of people on the sales support (sales engineering) side make 300k...I've been in the IT field for 25 years and I have friends that work for Cisco, Google and Amazon that are all clearing between 250-300k a year...

I'm getting ready to retire in 5 to 10 years and Im at the top of my career. I have no aspirations to seek advance for the remainder of my working life.

My advice - Ask yourself why a certain dollar figure matters to you. Every time I've increased my salary 20k-50k I've simply increased my expectations and have wanted more. I went to a financial advisor and he set me up to retire in a manner that will enable me to live a lifestyle I want. I know exactly when I will retire and with a solid idea of how much money I will have. The funny thing is, is that the retirement planning also enabled me to live how I want now. It enabled me to stop constantly wanting to increase my salary and it allowed me to spend the remainder of the money I wasnt saving today. I was making very good money and I was always stressed about money because I had no clear picture of where I would stand when I hit retirement. I'm happier at my current salary range than I would be if you added another 150k to my salary but without the confidence of my financial planning.

I'm not saying you shouldn't hustle and raise your salary. I'm simply saying that you can and will still feel poor if you raise your salary without appropriately planning. You can feel wealthy living on a 100k or you can feel broke living on 300k..

Then you only need to pull in $200K/Year (easy enough from one business) and you're done.

I've been hitting £350-450K for a couple of years, but as of a few months ago have completely taken my foot off the pedal because I feel like im at a stage where I can do a ton more work (read: time) but the earnings wont increase as quickly (in relation) - so im just losing loads of time where I may only be able to increase by say £25-50K a year extra.

Tbh, feel utterly unmotivated with what im doing atm. Its not hard/mentally stimulating/challening and I feel like im getting no satisfaction from it.

When money no longer motivates you / is your motivation, then where do you turn to?

I really miss the digital marketing/social marketing/advertising and initial start up culture. Being passionate and obsessive about something and growing your 'baby' into something impressive.

Would love to consistently hit £500K+ / Year doing something I love, but it seems (not always, but a lot of the time) in order to hit the big bucks, you need to take on a ton more responsibilities (warehouses, staff, then pay your staff each month, pensions for them, healthcare for them, dealing with bull**** dramas, lazy staff members, pulling sickies) and its a ton more stress.

I think thats why im happier hitting the lower figures, when its only my fiancee and I on the payroll and if I dont wanna work one day - then I dont etc. Dont have to answer to anyone or deal with anyone other than clients.

I think for me, the best bet would be to carry on what im doing - but reinvest the profits I make into a new company / startup. That would be the quickest/most straight forward way for me to hit £500K+ / year with minimal effort/time
Sell your business for a chit load as is, then start a new company from scratch.

Why does it matter? Even if he gave you all the details do you think you'd be able to replicate his success? He's making 400k because it's the right business forhim.

Does anything on the misc 'matter' ? No, its a place for lulz.

However, he's claiming $600k plus a year, working when he feels like it, straight out of college. (if he even went to college). Cant tell us anything meaningful about it at all. He's offering no help worth a damn.

Genuinely successful people don't tend to go on online forums and shout about how they made it. They don't need the validation. I doubt anyone wants to replicate what he is claiming. I certainly don't, I'm more than happy and will be financially retired well before 50. And I've never done a hard days work in my life.

People that take the time and effort to fraud deserve to be called out. I called out Welshautist the other day so badly he had to delete the thread. Is Lex frauding? I don't know..but if what he posts here is representative of his communication skills/trustworthiness in business.. you do the maths.

The responses here from people who don't actually make >$300k and never will are fukking hilarious. Sorry to burst your bubbles, brahs, but your dumbass business ideas are almost certainly going to fail. The overwhelming majority of startups fail, and the few that succeed very rarely net over $200k in profits a year. Successfully running your own business also isn't a 2-3 hour a day thing (I don't know what the fukk LexBrah is selling, but his advice is too vague to be meaningful). It's a 12 hour a day thing.

Getting into "sales" also isn't going to make you >$300k. There are very few industries where sales people make anything remotely approaching that number. The only two I can think of that satisfy that criteria are medical device sales and pharma, and only the top sales people earn money like this. To be a good sales person in these industries, you need to be EXCEPTIONALLY charming. About 0% of miscers have the social skills to pull this off.

The overwhelming number of people making >$300k are professionals in the "rat race." The people who make it out of the rat race are very much the exception, and I frankly doubt that anyone ITT is such an exception. So the cold, hard truth is that you're going to have to work chitty hours as a corporate executive, banker, lawyer, or doctor if you want a reliable shot at this sort of money. You can pretend all you want that some fantasy sales job, app, or bitcoin scheme is going to get you there, but it won't.

You underestimate the mental side of it all. Nobody has ever achieved great success by believing it is impossible for them. If you don't think you can achieve at a certain level, you won't. Its a self limiting belief that will keep you from even trying.

The thing that most successful people have in common is a little bit of hubris. People have this kind of irrational confidence and belief in their abilities and continue to believe that even when people like yourself tell them they can't do it. And there is no better feeling than to look back smugly on comments like yours after hitting those milestones.

Cool. Cool.

Dreaming isn't going to get you >$300k. Putting your nose to the fukking grindstone is the only reliable way to get there.

Also, spare us your smugness. At 180k, you haven't made it to OP's >$300K threshold.

Interesting. Maybe everyone that is successful suffers from some type of delusion, but delusion in itself doesn't make a person successful etc. This also leads to some survivorship biases

You're right about that, I haven't. Doesn't mean I'm not going to keep working towards it though. If I never get there, fine. But I think I'm capable of it which is better than sitting around thinking herp derp thats impossible, I could never do it.

Yes absolutely. I think that an unwavering - and sometimes irrational - confidence in your abilities is key to success at a high level. That alone won't make you successful as you pointed out, but it will keep driving you towards the goal despite setbacks and naysayers, etc. If you think you can, you are going to exhaust every option in trying to make it reality vs getting discouraged and giving up.

Who said it was impossible? It's not impossible at all to get into the top 1%, but people here (including you, frankly) have hopelessly naive ideas about how to get there.

Look here:https://archive.nytimes.com/www.nyti.../index.html?hp

Who are in the top 1%? Physicians, lawyers, and executives. Dentists and people in the financial industry also often meet that threshold. It's a statistical fact that the overhwelming number of people in the top 1% are in these fields. God bless you, child, but you don't see many "mobile phone sales people" in the top 1%.

The question you all have to ask yourselves is whether you're serious about getting into the top 1%, and what price you're willing to pay. If you want to just dream and fukk around, by all means, take the advice ITT or head over to the cryptocurrency subforum. If you want a predictable path to wealth, double down on the rat race. There's no easy way from where you are today to the 1%.

Thats where you're wrong. First off even most doctors, lawyers, etc aren't becoming 1% from their jobs. The 1% is not achieved by working for an employer, even amongst those professional fields you mentioned. The exceptions being high level surgery, dentists who own a very successful practice, the elite lawyers, etc. Exceptions, not norms. 1% is reached almost exclusively through entrepreneurship or investing, with VERY few exceptions.

You can try your hand at stocks but that is the least ideal way to achieve 1%. To get rich you either need to start in real estate and build up your portfolio - the safest and closest to "guaranteed" path to wealth. OR start and sell a business (s) - the more difficult option given there are way more variables that go into the success.

And for someone with a high income it is much easier to get the ball rolling on RE investing, or to start another business. LOL at you thinking you are the only one ITT that possesses some sort of sacred knowledge about the path to wealth.

There are miscers who say they are successful, and I believe them. Can think of 5 or 6. Donblax was itt earlier. Whatever he writes and however he writes it, it adds up. If he's lying, he's incredibly good at it.

What lexbrah writes itt alone, makes me highly suspicious. I have a good nose for bs. If he's telling the truth, he's incredibly bad at it.

You have no fukking idea what you're talking about. The majority of the 1% are in these fields. The statistics are what they are. Can you not be bothered to look at them? Read the infographic I linked.

To be clear, I'm not talking about your community lawyer, general practitioner, or executive at a no name local company. I'm talking about Big Law, surgeons, and blue chip executives. These people constitute the majority of the 1%. You'd be right if you said that they aren't the .01%. That group consists almost entirely of exceptional entrepreneurs, a handful of CEOs, and heirs. But we're talking about >$300k (not quite the 1%) in this thread. If you want to talk about >$10m, that's a different beast, and I doubt that anyone here is qualified to talk about that.

Here is the major finding: Almost ⅔ of the income for one-percenters come from non-labor sources, almost the opposite of the rest of the population.

For the overall population, 64% of income comes from compensation, which is essentially your paycheck. By contrast one percenters only see 39% of their income come from compensation. The bulk of their income comes from non-labor sources, the biggest of which are business and investment.

The richer you are, you more likely your income will come from owning a business or investing your money well.

But a new study from the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center found that the real money for the wealthy is made from investments and business income—not compensation.

I'd be interested to hear their views. But they are truly exceptions. Most people with incomes over $300K took very mundane paths to get there, and those paths were paved with sweat -- not dreams.

With all due respect, you have no idea how to interpret what you're reading.

Partners at law firms receive their income through partnership distributions, which are "business income" (partners own the firm). Successful executives receive most of their income through stock options and other non-salary compensation ("business" or "investment" income). Successful physicians often own their own practice, which means they earn "business income" rather than a salary. Your citations are entirely consistent with my citation earlier ITT.

Edit: If you want another source (other than the one I already sent you), here:https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/...n_1017640.html.
