If we're talking GOAT though it has to be frosted chocolate fudge straight out of the toaster with some butter spread on it. BRB going to the store.

Speaking of...think I should do some taste testing?

Manufactured in 2006, I've had that case since sometime in 2007 or 2008, so it hasn't been stored in a garage or anything...most contents should still be as 'good' as they once were

I threw out a 2006 inspection date case or two when we moved last year...moving sucks.

And did you see that mountain house retroactively made all of their pouches dated for 30 year shelf life? TST

Most MRE's will be fine for 5-10 years. I've eaten canned food that was 4 or 5 years past expiration

It really is a shame how many people don't understand that letting supply/demand set prices is actually better. This "price gouging" BS comes up all the time...such as the 2013 banic times.

Laws against "price gouging", price ceilings, and other artificially low prices (causing a shortage at that price) are about a effective as "gun free" zones enforced by signage. Emotional feel good but actually make things worse
Yes, setting a limit of x/person. I'm an econ grad, I understand economic theory. Problem is in the real world, there are way more variables that impact how things work to be be able to just reference a supply/demand curve or economic theory, especially in a non-normal situation, not to mention moral/ethical implications, not only for the business owner personally, but in regards to future business.

The argument in support of allowing large price increases during short term demand spikes is that those who truly need/value an item will be willing to pay the price that pushes many other would-be buyers out of the market, and therefore the supply will be there for them to make the purchase. It's a valid argument in the sense of obviously being able to hold on to supply longer, but it screws a lot of people over in a potentially life and death situation when the limited supply will be replenished within the following handful of days typically. It's obviously the seller's right to do so, at least in states that don't have legislation barring it, but it doesn't mean it wouldn't be a dick move, and potentially face massive consumer backlash that hurts future sales.

A limit per person...BRB round trips to the parking lot for every person in the group to get as many as we can before they are gone...and buying when don't really need where people wouldn't if the price were higher. BRB, insider trading, special friends/family of workers, or those with bribes, are given first dibbs on product as it comes out, held behind the shelf, etc...just read all the problems people said they had with that regarding ammo/.22lr never even making it to the shelf at places like Walmart. So there's a lot of "theory vs reality" to holding price down and rationing, too...nothing is perfect of course.

How does an empty shelf that was bought out, due to the shortage-level pricing, help out those people more than still having product? Because that still happens and would still happen even with a per person (really a per transaction) limit. A "lower price" when out of stock may as well be a $10 million price tag to most of us. Why would so many people rather see nothing available, than something available but at an unusually high price? It just doesn't make sense.

The real world have your cake and eat it too...during the banic, LGS's who were smart would auction pretty much everything they got off using gunbroker, and using a different account name that was not readily identified as them. Put "low price" normal pricing tags on the empty shelf and tell everybody you are out, but really, your inventory is all in the back being auctioned off for big $ online. Get max profits for your stuff AND keep the locals happy because you "aren't price gouging like those *******s over at ___ who want $700 for a Glock".

ETA: ALmost forgot...elevated prices help get those resupplies in more quickly since there is more profit to be made to whomever gets the most stuff rushed to the area quickest/first. Prices of course are great at that...getting stuff that's really needed at whatever location, to that location ASAP

1. These are the same people that say "I have no need for a firearm to protect myself, because it will never happen to me".
2. These people live paycheck to paycheck and NEVER think about survival situations because the government will bail them out.
3. Some people never actually think about these things until the media tells them to.
4. The grocery store will ALWAYS have food.

Last year when Irma hit, I was in rage mode. After the storm 'these people' were given checks up to $500 for 'lost food' due to power being out. The stores were more empty then (up to 2 weeks after) than before the storm. You know for that these people didn't have $500 worth of food that got spoiled. People were spending their 'free money' on 12 gallons of milk, 30 packs of steak, 24 loaves of bread, etc, etc. That 'free money' sealed it in these people heads that someone will be there to bail them out.

I keep 2 weeks of water for each member of my family, batteries to last a decade, rice/beans to last a month, etc and people make fun of me. When storms come, I get to laugh at them posting on ******** about how there's no water anywhere.

TLDR, people are sheep.

The real problem is, that people know you keep that stuff. They will and do laugh...but then there will probably be the jokes about "I know where I'm going if ___"...and you know that if ___ happens, they'll feel entitled to some of what you have since, well, you have it and they don't.

Hence the guns...and just hope the government doesn't agree with their ideas of redistributing...anti "hoarding" laws are right up there with the anti "price gouging" laws.

You'd think they would 'get it' at that point.

And maybe they do, but refer back to your points about somebody being there to bail them out. With that somebody being the .gov bailing them out with either pretend printed fiat that drives inflation and reduces everybody's actual purchasing power, or bailing them out with money taken forcibly from others via taxation.

There is something to be said for buying stuff in person, spread out over time and location, and for having say a PO box or UPS box or what have you, away from your exact area, to receive things...

I have an earthquake kit set up, but no food and water which is obviously critical. I have water filters from backpacking/climbing and a water source nearby but I still want to get an actual supply of water.

A 7 gallon Aquatainer from whatever big box outdoors store, or Walmart, is a really good cheap start to water, esp for just one person, there's a few days.

Yeah, for under $20. I just bought 2 6 gallon water jugs for camping from Wally World for 12 bucks each. My wife said we'd just take a couple cases of water...........She doesn't quite get it, yet

Of course rationing isn't perfect, but it gets needed commodities to people that wouldn't be able to get them otherwise. We're not talking long term scenarios here. Resupply is only an issue if there are barriers to literally getting into the area, you really think coca cola is going to renegotiate their price with a retailer and get down there with more aquafina any sooner than they would otherwise, just because they assume the retailer is a firm believer in free market principles? You're reading out of a text book here.

Interesting. That's what it's made for.............

But I need better options. Both for travel/B.O.B., and for base camp

I thought the entire point of those straws was that you could drink from basically any water source you came across safely?
