You can MOVE up from those job positions. You can work an administrative job for 40K a year, get an MBA and go into finance or marketing etc.

You don't have to stay in that position forever. Also, its better than working retail with only a H.S degree.

I think it's the culture really. Spent a lot of time in Asia, and those guys are pressured to get college degrees without getting kicked out of their parents' house when they turn 18. In fact, some parents would rather keep them in their house even as their kids start pursuing their careers.

In short, Asian parents pay for college tuition, and don't charge for housing expenses like food, utilities, or even rent sometimes.

As opposed to Western standards, which is why more and more people (males specifically) decide to opt out of a college degree to make money.

When was 40k even considered ‘decent’ money?

Lmaooo if I had to go to school for 4 yrs, be in debt and get a job @40k a year, I’d be pissed

You START at 40K.

Its VERY hard to get 40K with only a H.S degree. If you don't believe me, TRY IT. Trade school, you can, but not only with a H.S degree.

“You wasted $150,000 on an education you coulda got for $1.50 in late fees at the public library.”

For real. The people that hate went to college to peruse passion.

IMO college is for a career, passion is during your free time. I wouldn't spend $150k to study journalism .

It's fun, but you have to ask yourself why all but the most elite institutions, including public universities, must be subsidized and funded by the state. There is a very simple economic reason for this. Quite frankly, they wouldn't be able to operate effectively in the free market. Many of these institutions produce shoddy research of limited economic value. The majority of degrees issued by public universities are practically worthless. They do not train people with skills that are in demand by the economy. They relax standards, and pump out more people with degrees every year. It devalues academic achievement. The result is that the vast majority of people with a BS or MS are incompetent and the credential itself is about as relevant as a high school diploma used to be. They also overtrain PhDs. They lie about there being a STEM shortage when there is no such shortage.

This article was written in 1999, but it is even more relevant today.

LOL

Care to pull the median salary for those liberal arts bachelor degrees and compare them to the tradies...

You seem fond of the basic college vs non, but never go beyond the data. The good degrees are the ones that push it up. The liberal arts beyond that you need to adjust all money to present dollars including the student loan payment.

Yes bitter.

Unless you are studying STEM at a top school, getting a degree is just a useless, expensive formality.
How were you "forced"? YOU made the decision to go to college. YOU made the decision to sign up for those loans.

And no it is not a requirement if you have skills in an ACTUAL in demand field. I make over 100K a year. Not a single college degree nor college class to my name.

Deal with it!

That's stupid and not the point.

usually whatever you end up doing youre gonna need specific training for it when you start doing it.

Its rare that you learn in college anything youre actually gonna do unless its a few specific fields.

And the most important thing is to be a well rounded American, not some perfectly trained cog in a rat race where all you ever learned is what youre gonna do.

This isn't communist Europe or something.

we don't NEED all that specialization. That's what mentally non-free people don't get

Its not about learning one topic its about learning how to learn EVERYTHING. Variety is the spice of life.

The jokeswritethemselves.
I think we should be able to talk about those things. The problem is those professors only focus on those issues and are afraid to tackle other issues that don't fit their political agenda, and I think this is where a lot of the anger and resentment comes from. Furthermore, this often spirals into straight up hate speech generally targeted at white men. I would LOVE to be able to discuss things like racism and sexism like adults and in a manner that's solution oriented. Unfortunately, it's easier for folks to oversimplify issues and play the blame game.

Because most people are just following the herd and not going for the love of learning/higher education. It’s just an extension of high school that you pay for but with hotter sloots and better parties. 4 years goes by pretty quick, and you’re kicked to the curb with a piece of paper and no job prospects. It’s easy to become opposed when you feel like you’ve wasted 4 years and thousands of dollars on something you didn’t really want in the first place

I went just to learn, changed majors at will when I felt like it, left, came back, did whatever.

I cant possibly imagine not having gone. I would not feel like I am living life to the fullest by any means.

I cant even express how beautiful and powerful it is to to fall in love with learning and academia.

it was the most critical part of my development and I cant imagine what my alternate self would have been like if I hadn't gone. Life would be nowhere as meaningful and my mind would be nowhere as woke.

Its a springboard for everything for the rest of ones life. Gives an appreciation for the power of truth and the power of humanity and the human mind. Unlocks your full potential.

As sad as it is anyone who didnt go through the process is intellectually and emotionally underdeveloped. which is different than being "dumb" or "smart". Its more like enriched with erudition and scope of all of reality.

Dont be fooled by coping tradies. A college degree is definitely worth having and helps you get your foot in the door for many careers providing you studied a real subject (science, engineering, medicine etc) and graduated with a good degree.

Most employers in the UK wont take on anyone with less than a 2:1

But ultimately, having good connections and networking with employers is arguably just as important as being academically proficient

More people are more aware of the costs, debt, the worthless degrees, and it's not the only option though traditionally advertised as, most successful people I know or met are not because they went to college, even though some say college can be a learning experience. It's an option that some people benefit from depending on the competition and job field, but most would be stupid to rely on it.

i went to college and i think it was a huge waste of time. nothing i learned applied to anything i do at work.

i wish i spent my time learning something useful like welding or wood working or how to fly an airplane. instead i learned about ancient egypt and the social economic status of women in mesopotamia. wtf

Theres a huge social stigma to go to college and that if you don't youre dumb or something.

I attribute the anti-college rise to a few things:

1. The cost. It is ridiculous how much college is nowadays. Unless your parents are paying for it or if you have a set plan (no one really does) to major in something in STEM and are actually good. it is not worth it IMO.

2. Availability of resources. Colleges used to be the gatekeepers of further knowledge. Now we can just go online and learn stuff, buy books, etc.

3. Job requirements. There are a lot of jobs that require experience nowadays and I will expand this on my second point but school alone wont cut it anymore.

4. Different types of jobs. There are now a ton of jobs that do not require a college degree at all and prefer that you have experience instead. Since the online boom there is a greater demand for video making, marketing, growth hacking, coding, etc. stuff you can learn on your own and will be hired based on your personal projects and experience. not school.

5. Outdated knowledge. With how fast the world is changing, a lot of knowledge is outdated in college. I know for a lot of film schools (inb4 that is a waste anyways) that the information is outdated. markeing they dont teach you anything useful either.

6. Actual useful knowledge. colleges dont teach you how to build good credit, how to do your taxes, etc. If I had one class in college where I learned how to do all the useful stuff then I would make college at least 10% more worth it.

7. Time. I find it ridiculous that it takes 4 years to "prep" you for an entry level job. For a lot of jobs out there you could probably learn in training within a few months and be good at it. (yes there should be background checks and other tests or experience checkers but 4 years of school doesnt really prove much IMO)

as you can tell im pretty anti college and this is coming from a guy who graduated from college. i will say this though. I think for the majority of people college is probably yoru best choice. unless youre disciplined, ambitious, and have some idea of your identity which the majority of people do not. just go to college.
