When you're scheduled to work 3-11pm, then it's time to go home but they ask you to do another shift. That's 3-11, 11-7am. That's 16 straight hours. Do that back to back days and see if that doesn't wear you down.

Guy probably works a ton of OT, still obviously on the high end. My wife makes $60/hr, but she’s been working there forever and it’s a world renown speciality hospital.

They don't, that's either working 2 jobs (one full time one per diem) or doing a ton of OT at the one job.

Fiance is a BSNRN in Neuro ICU and she does have to clean patients regularly if she has to.

Also, around here community colleges have 2 year programs that fast track you to RN - you need to get your BSN within 10 yrs. Job can not be as difficult as ppl make is seem if they are letting 2 yr community college kids provide care.

My wife has been a nurse for over ten years. She's a Critical Care RN and she made about 110k last year.

She averages about 55 hours per week. She never works less than 4 days a week at 12 hours (except for vacations), and she will often work 5.

Nurses in cali average ~140k.. OP is not pulling numbers out of his as$. And that's not ones in ED or higher paid ones. just blanket average.
float pool nurses in GA make $75/hour here. Just need a bit of experience and they'll let you do float.. Not sure if they can do that full time but that's 141k/year

They don't work that many hours. I work in LE and I've always thought nurses have the GOAT schedule. Here they work three 13's per week. I would gladly take that as a permanent schedule as when I worked nights it wasn't uncommon to hit 16's when I got called into court of if I had a late call.


I work two 12's one week then five 12's the next and pick up about 12h of over-time on my short week and 7h of overtime on my long week. Its a lot because I don't technically need to work OT but its nice to have a large disposable income. Plus anytime I need to take a week or two off its easy and doesn't affect finances.

OP's neighbor lives in Oregon.

Nurses normally don't make that much money. 160k is too high. Probably lying to you. Nurses can make 100k with OT. CRNAs make 160k+ but they don't work in the ED so that does not count. NPs don't get paid that much either.

$95k average base salary in Portland across the board.

high paying unit/place (think plastic surgery clinic, or seniority at a hospital after jumping jobs a few times) and a 4th shift a week = way over 100k.

even general surgeons make $300k minimum,

surgical subspecialties make significantly more than that, ortho avg $500k and neurosurgery $700k+

no one who went to med school makes less than $200k working at least 40 hours/week

A lot of jobs where you "can make" a lot of money, but the devil is in the details. I guess it's possible if he was making $30/hr plus with 80hrs, 40 being overtime. Then that's litterally working to live and living to work just killing himself every day.

I know quite a few who work departments like er and ICU. None make more than 80k. I know a couple NPs and they clear like 100k. I know a travel nurse who makes 150k. Pretty sure all of them would relocate right now at 12:30am for 160k working a regular shift.
It’s not BS. You can make that in local agency work also, during winter needs especially with some OT mixed in. Obviously he isn’t making that at your local hospital as core staff even with seniority.

The field is changing, 4 years ago i was starting my shift at my unit and every RN on duty was male srs.

I made 106k last year, already at 100 this year as of last check. There is a guy at work that makes 150k regularly, he picks up more call on average. I do 7 days of on call per month, I may or may not get called.
