3 years ago, still in my early 30s, my dad died and I had to move mom (early 60s, with Alzheimer's) into a nursing home since she lost her caregiver. Granted dad was 71, but he was one of those old bastards that seemed he'd outlive everyone else just to spite them. A brain tumor took him our after he suffered for years with other breathing issues - go figure. Then my poor mom had the dementia onset in her 50s, to the point where now she's like my toddler at best. Horribly sad.

Lots of things suck and you never know when it's going to hit. Best wishes to ya.

be thankful that at almost 30 years of age you are sitll cutting wood with your father and can generally enjoy outdoor activities with him.

my mom is 63 and dying of ALS. she was diagnosed in january of this year (almost been 1 year) in the span of less than a year she has lost the ability to walk, use her arms for pretty much anything and requires help using the bathroom, eating and bathing. We dont expect her to make it to 2020

I remember hiking with my mother as recently as 4 years ago. every moment is so precious man, your old man might be slowing down today and dead by the end of the year, it can happen in the blink of an eye. I wish I could go back in time and spend so much more time with her prior to this disease.

EDIT: im 24, mom had me at 39 years old. she was always the active , outdoorsy one. my dad is a soyboy, but extremely smart and well read. would rather play scrabble with the family then go outside for a bike ride.

Wish I could see my pops get old in his right state of mind. Lung cancer spread to his brain, tumor was removed but hes basically a child again. Short term memory is shot, goes to the bathroom on himself, and needs to be watched over 24/7.

Cancer sucks.. enjoy the time u get with him and make sure u ask him all the deep life questions u always wanted to while hes still mentally capable of answering.

Sorry about your mom, going through something very similar with my dad. Mans search for meaning is a solid book to help maintain a positive outlook while you deal with horrible circumstances.

Agreed OP. My dad is 86 and has Alzheimer's and he's fading fast, doubt he makes 90. He was pretty sprightly until the Alzheimer's became very apparent a couple of years ago.

I'm cherishing what little time I have left with him when he does eventually die I know I'm going to fall apart and be a mess.

Saw that with my other grandpa this year. Went from healthy as a bull to dead in 6 weeks. cancer sucks.

Same. My dad is late 60s, mum early. Gran was born in 1916. Makes it harder to handle the demographic trends imo.

Must mean we are fertile though.

Dad is 63 , past 3 years his weight has significantly dropped , see his face molding into an old man . I do think about it and then look at him like its the last time ill see him. Just spend as much time as you can well their active and cognitive functoons in tact

I can relate. My parents are only in their early 60s, but neither are exactly healthy. My mother was always a bit fragile. My father has years of heavy drinking under his belt, and 5 years of prison aged him terribly (he got out a few years ago).

My dad was 44 when and my mother was 42 when they had me. It really blows when your parents are elderly by the time you become a man. I'm hoping I can churn out some grandchildren for them before it's too late.

I think for a lot of people seeing their parents "age" faster is also because you most likely don't live with them, and don't see them changing every day.

Once you only see them a handful of times a month/year, it speeds up the process. I know after moving out that it feels that way, but I still get to regularly see my parents.

I'm at that age where my parents are basically "old people" however neither they nor I like to use that word. My Dad still sees "old" as 80+ and despite his age and afew health issues which require daily medication, he does whatever his 70 year-old frame will allow him to do. He even did some discuss and shot-put training last year and occassionaly rides his sports bike. He didn't have my youngest bro til he was 43 and its startling how many people have mistaken then for granddad and grandson.

My mother was diagnosed with MS (mutiple sclerosis) only a few months ago. However its just one of those conditions people have to live with. Better to develop it at late 60s than late 20s. The actresses Selma Blair and Jamie Lynn Sigler have it as well.

Fck ... dementia in her 50s?! That seems much too young.

I had my DNA checked out and apparently I have a genetic marker for Alzheimer's. It said "late onset Alzheimer's" though, so I guess I might get it when I'm in my 80s or some chit. I recently found out that drugs like Benadryl increase your odds of getting Alzheimer's too, so I immediately threw out what Benadryl pills I had left in the house. Hold me, brahs.

yeah, my freedom and happiness trump all other factors. she had job offers for 250-300k while still in her last year of residency. i'm sure she's making 300 right now. i could have used sloot logic and married her and never worked again. just lol @ being trash like that. same goes for the lawyer who wanted to get married.

i've pulled hotter sloots since then and i'll pull even hotter ones in the future. i'm sure i'll date more doctors and lawyers going forward. wood rather never have another GF though. mark my words: my next GF (should i be weak enough to have another one) will look like a god-tier model srs

damn, currently miscing with a lump in my throat. Dad's 77, still plays sports and no health issues, but watching him get slower and slower on the badminton court, and out of breath easily when on hikes with family is brutal!!!

It comes in stages

The first for me was my dad following me down something skiing and having a big crash. I realised that for some time he'd been just following me down things he wasn't happy skiing at his age and just not said anything for some time. I'd just never thought about it.
I think a pivotal time is when you ask your parents advice about something and realise they don't know any more about it than you do. Spun me out a bit.
Recently I asked my dad to help me move some stuff into my new flat and he said he would love to but he just can't carry heavy stuff anymore and not sure how much use he'd be

My mum, the women who drove through Yugoslavia and along a road known as called "the death road" in a small BMW for the lulz has stopped driving long distances and at night. Just bought an automatic.

Fuk just take me back to the times when my parents were superheros and no matter how fuked up I'd managed to make something they always knew what to do and sorted it outDoes make me grow the fuk up though.
