Do you know your credit score? What are your needs?

Sounds like you are building credit. I do like the credit cards through banks or credit unions. Before I knew anything about credit in my early 20s I had retail credit cards. I don't recommend them. I later got a credit card for car maintenance called CarCarOne which was really good and it helped me build credit. I later got a Chase Freedom with a starting limit of $3500 a few years back. It is currently at a $15000 limit. My Chase Sapphire Preferred is higher.

I'd get something through a credit union / bank or a simple card like Discover IT, Chase Freedom / Unlimited IMO. Something with NO annual fee.

Ah okay thanks man, do banks/credit unions typically need a lot of capital in one's savings for a credit card? or just proof of employment/solid financial history? Needs are really just to build credit. Just have an extra backup for anything if things go down. I don't have chase out in the islands, so doubt I could get a card through them.

Typically income, solid employment. If you're worried you can get a secured credit card or get someone to cosign who has established credit (i.e. a family member).

Great thread boyos. I’ll be in on this continually.

I’m 22 with one CC (Discover IT), but I’ve fallen into debt recently and dropped down to a 710 credit score. Previously, I was at 760 range. Am I going to be able to get it back to that level once I pay off my CC debt? When should I open a line of credit?

one thing that is worth mentioning is that when you guys are done getting new lines of credit/loans etc., i would strongly advise that you lock your credit reports with the 3 bureaus. i think back when i did it, it was 20 bucks or something. well worth it if you want to protect your score and defend against identity theft

So obviously I use this one for everything through Amazon, but also any time I'm dining out or filling up the car. The Quicksilver card was my first rewards card and is 1.5% back on everything, so that's my main card that I use everywhere else and where all my auto pay bills are set up to go through.

I'm thinking of getting the AMEX Platinum. I really leverage my cards for points for travel. I may see if I can change my Chase Freedom to an Unlimited if it yields me more points but I hardly use it TBH.

That annual fee is HUGE but I was willing to pay a similar fee for the Chase Sapphire Reserve but can't now because of the family clause.

I'd check and see what your bank or credit union can do for you, but I'd also run a free credit check on Credit Karma and see what kind of offers they give that are (supposed to be) tailored to your credit history. With little or no credit, you might not be able to get signed up to a rewards card (I have no idea). If that's the case, really any that will give you credit should be fine. If you use it correctly, the interest rate should be almost entirely irrelevant, unless you get into a crazy severe emergency. Get used to putting purchases on your card, but never carrying a balance. At a minimum it should be paid off in full every month. I pay mine off weekly usually. After you've build up some credit see what kind of offers you get or can find for rewards cards and open one of them.

I was thinking of getting the card before I travel/move. I also read that it has no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees, which is a win for me!

Look at this way... I bought a $3700 watch with my platinum. I lost it at a Fair 4 weeks later and AMEX reimbursed me through a check. All they wanted was the receipt.

Ok quick question. I have 3 cards and all of them have subscription services tied to them. One is Amazon Prime, another is Spotify, and the last is Netflix. I pay them ALL as soon as I get the notification that my statement has arrived. Is this a good/smart way to increase my credit score relatively fast or do companies like to see variation and not just the same $4.99 charge over and over again?

Bills and car note are always paid on time as well. I'm not too into churning points/miles since I'm not really making that much money atm.

activity doesn't increase the score really. if everything reports with a balance, even if it's small, it probably decreases your score. if you have a card that gives you a fico, try moving your auto pays all to one card and leave it for a few months to report like that and i bet your score would increase. this stuff is pretty minor compared to age of accounts/large balances/pay history though

the best way to increase your score is to stop fukken around with new accounts and let everything age, let all the inquiries drop off and to keep balances pretty low. they just want you to be an old, stable dude sitting in a leather chair smoking a pipe

I should have very favorable approval odds for both. I was looking at the benefits with Uber and the $200 credit. Pretty awesome.

I have Amex Platinum and it's good for me. I travel a lot. I use almost all the benefits. I book a good amount of full fare first class travel on the amex website and get a chit ton of points (5x points when you book there). Got enough points just this year to book first class for me and the wife to Japan and back for free. That's over $10k worth at least.

Free entry to the lounges, especially the centurion lounges is really nice.
