IME, a lot of kids who are obsessed with Rap don't. They don't have a close emotional relationship with their parents or a mentor.

IMO guidance is a human need, people meet that need in the abstract (eg. ideals, religion, philosophy, etc) and/or in persons (mentors, role models, parents).

Gabor Mate speaks about one of the tragedies of modern life, being that kids turn to their peers and media for guidance, rather than members of their community - because our society and economic system promotes physical social disconnection.

Kids turn to social media, and music, for guidance on how to speak, dress, behave, etc.

Imagine a kid growing up in a social environment that mirrors the things spoken about in gangsta rap - then that means that gangster rap is reinforcing the values and norms of that social environment.

I think that TV and movies are less of an influence when it comes to violence, because actors will openly say or show that they are not the characters they portray. Gangsta rappers never admit to be 'actors', and saying things just to make money - so they intentionally blur reality and fantasy, whereas TV and Movie actors don't.

Porn is probably closer to Gangsta rap, than mainstream TV and film. Pornstars always pretend they they love what they are doing, and it's never 'just a job' - in the same way that gangsta rappers always pretend to be a gang member, serial killer and drug dealer.

Hip Hop is more than just rap music, but the mainstream rappers that have dominated the charts and broke through into influencing pop culture have been mostly garbage individuals. The popular rap artists promote a lifestyle that, first of all most of them don't even live, but more importantly is entirely toxic and will destroy lives. The constant glorification of things we cannot discuss on misc are degrading mostly young males into addicts, recidivists and uninspired lost souls who lack the skills to contribute to society.

It wasn't always this way. Hip Hop was initially a movement meant to empower impoverished communities. Hip Hop was comprised of intelligent, creative, socially conscious young men who strived to express themselves in a new way and provide a voice to their voiceless communities. From its inception until the 90s, it was actually a positive influence on society. Then the gangs came in. Then the record executives came in. Then social media put the nail in the coffin. Now our impressionable young generation is subjected to something evil that destroys society.

I will listen to rap music until the day I die and believe in the goodness of the culture, but unfortunately it's been driven underground.

I am a big fan and agree with this. At the same time music is something creative and expressive. Rap music was a result of multiple factors, including their ancestry in music (blues, motown, funk, etc.) and living conditions.

Direct reflection of culture/living conditions. Unfortunately the breed of the original rappers died off. A lot of the more mainstream rap that's played on the radio isn't even the issue. I'm old enough to remember when Boosie was one of the rising stars. He was extremely popular among those with a lower socioeconomic status. He kind of got wrapped up in the legal system and got his wings clipped before social media era though.

But compare this type of music/music video to the original rappers and even the more mainstream rappers today... The videos below are the type of rappers that are influencing the younger crowd from the projects/ghetto. At least in my area. The wanna be rappers are basically a mirror of this. With the exception that starting around 14-16 they are getting violent as hell. They are carrying guns/shooting at each other/doing drive by's for the lulz and for street cred. No sense of consequence. There are little groups of wanna be rappers filming videos like these in my city/nearby cities. They steal/commit burglaries to get the guns.

It doesn’t cause anything. It may enable and encourage low iq people to act accordingly but the same could be said for metal and emo rock.

Basically low iq *******s make chit music for other low iq *******s to celebrate. But it’s never a whole genre.

Maybe there was a time when this was true, but not now. Life imitates art. Little kids see dumb sht in rap and emulate it. A lot of these people base their entire lives around rap music and trying to be like their favorite rappers. You know that to be true, as well as I do. Skimmed through the thread, as a few others have stated I find Rap and Hip Hop to be motivating and uplifting, more so the old school variety than what it has currently devolved into with the exception of a few acts.

My running and lifting playlists are compiled mostly of 2Pac, Eminem, Nas, Notorious B.I.G, Kendrick Lamar, etc and many of my PR's in fitness can be in part credited to the adrenaline surge that accompanies listening to this and other genres of music.

Many rappers do seem to promote the degenerate lifestyle though and people that are easily impressionable and attempt to imitate their actions can quickly find themselves on the wrong path.

Also, using 2Pac as an example, the mainstream media usually portrayed him as a dangerous thug or gangsta spewing hatred and violence but anyone that has really listened to his music knows he has lots of songs that highlight struggles and overcoming them, injustice, inequality and have very positive messages. The song changes posted in this thread is a prime example of this.

The media portrays certain people and groups so as to emphasize the negatives and downplay the positives in an effort to bolster their agendas.

I consider the negative crap spewed in 95% of rap music ever made to be more of a product of chit cultural values than the other way around.

But beyond that, what I can say for sure is, if rap had never existed, we'd have a whole hell of a lot less chitty music on our hands. The vast, vast majority (like 97%) of rap ever made makes garbage tier music acts like Fall Out Boy look talented. I will admit that there are a very select few rappers who were/are genuinely impressive and talented, but the garbage acts far outweigh the quality ones.

Not contradicting myself at alll. Like I said, If parents allow their children to listen to music with parental advisory labels on it, it will fucck them up. hat's not because the music is bad, music is an expression of free speech. The situation occurs because the parenting is bad. This reaction to rap is the classic ''ban vans'' reaction btw and its hilarious.

don't mind of a bit of 80-90's (hell even early 2000's) hip hop, its probably 20% of all music I listen to.

That being said, urban communities degenmaxx with hip hop. We would probably be better off.

The trash of society needs a past time otherwise they will wreak havoc. That should be Rap musics goal. They will sing about popping bitches, hustling drugs etc instead of actually doing it.

However all this chit are pushed to the society as mainstream music which is overly harmful.

There's no 'allow' anymore.

If a child has access to the internet, in any capacity, they have access to adult oriented musisc.

Also, rap is part of Top 40 radio. Even the rap played on Top 40 radio has messages and images that are IMO toxic for kids.

This was a Top 40 rap song, this is the edited version that kids could hear and watch....
