Currently using Assimil's Japanese books + audio lessons. I'm planning on joining a conversational Japanese group through meetup but don't want to embarrass myself being a total newbie.

i think if i were to learn a different language like with english characters i would learn so fast. spanish i could probably do in a year easily because i'm filipino and so many words are the same even though i don't know tagalog.

i mean i don't know a lot but the ones that i know sticks in my head. i think the more i come across though it might get harder.
i basically learn words that go with the kanji. for me it registers with my favorite words like chuu-sei-shin loyalty 忠 誠 心. these three kanji i can never forget because loyalty is one of my favorite words lol.
i can't write for **** though. i'm not sure why. it just doesn't register for me. even with so many writing exercises. i spent like weeks trying to memorize writing, after those weeks i couldn't remember them anymore. but i can read and memorize what it looks like.
i think i do pretty well, though i imagine i'm really slow compared to other people, because i've never known any characters aside from english characters and don't know any language except english
yeah but vocally i'm pretty confident, really easy to understand and pronounce, except for the ****in R sound for me lmao. sometimes i get it right, sometimes it's like wtf. "kore" that ****in word man. i feel awkward saying it all the time. even arigatou gozaimasu, but when i say arigatou gozaimasu slowly it sounds just right. fast i **** it up. but japanese people understand me when i use words that don't have that "r" sound.
my brother self-taught himself japanese playing japanese video games (imported, non-english versions) and i think a few light novels. i think it was a mix of playing and learning at the same time as he went on. he's 100% fluent in conversating with japanese people online or through text. he can also understand vocally fluent. i might try that as a test or something.
he learned really fast, like a year i think. he did take japanese in highschool but just for one year. but that was years before he tried teaching himself.

strangely though, some of the most random information just sticks in your head no matter how long you have stayed away from it.

I used to bring a notepad and the book posted above ^ and work on it during my break times. I would look at 1 page of Kanji, and write it down and speak the pronunciation, then close the book and write down the characters by memory. I managed to master about 60 kanji in a short time. One thing that has hampered me is, I got on a new shift at work and have lots of friends I work with now, and we all sit together at break times so I just stopped doing it.
I can ready hiragana no problem (but obviously don't know what im reading most of the time) Katakana is kind of a pain in the ass lol, really need to practice on it.
I also use the Anki app on my phone and downloaded a deck that has 2000 flash cards. it starts out with easy stuff and gets progressively harder. but again, it is something I have not done in 4-5 months.
I lack discipline with it, although, I do feel great when I sit down and really try and then finally understand something. or when I can read a sentence that has Kanji + Hiragana + Katakana, and I know what it says. but then when I finally get something done and feel good, I just stop for a while.
I always think now, sheit, how good would my Japanese be if I really stayed focused and kept at it every day?
I listen to Japanese music all the time, and watch a few anime and live action drama's. I might also start to watch Japanese boxing as well to help with listening
Bigly problem is, I spend more time looking up ways to effectively study, rather than actually studying. or wasting time on forums like this one, as the internet has shattered my attention span
planning to start studying it again. my goal will be to do 1.5 hours daily focused learning.
Would definitely like to live in Japan one day, hopefully when I am still a young lad. have always found Japanese culture very interesting and very appealing. I have always thought about trying to become an english teacher in Japan, and then branch out to other areas of work after getting settled in / more fluent in the language.

I have this book as well, and I have also heard it's like a godsend for learning Kanji, but I don't understand how, as it doesn't tell you the pronunciation of the characters

Many Japanese people often use ambiguous and inconclusive expressions until the very end of the conversations. It's frustrating even to a fellow Japanese like myself. You could say it's kind of national affliction.

About Kanji, because we can instantly convert inputted romanized hiragana into kanji with PCs or any mobile terminals, whether it's business or personal most of the communications are done by text messages and handwriting. As a result, people nowadays including me cannot write Kanji as many as we can read.
So IMO concentrating your effort on learning conversational Japanese and hiragana especially romanized typing is more faster and efficient way to study Japanese communications.
But still reading Kanji is essential if you actually plan to visit Japan. Although many railroad station uses signs both in Nihongo and English, still many signs are written in Kanji.
But don't worry, 2020 Tokyo Olympics will change and improve this situation.
If I could be of any help to you, please don't hesitate. Just drop by my journal at over 35 section, Post your questions there, I usually check it a few times a day.

Having a year of classroom and then personal study efforts is definitely possible. That's actually where I'm at in French. I'm a strong B1 intro B2. So a lot of my study of the language is watching "7 jour sur la planets" news videos in French and also finding things on Netflix. That said, I still like to follow the Pimsleur 3 course because it's something I can measure.

For example. I use to be really confident in Russian, but only because I took a year of it in college. However, I'm losing a lot of it daily. There are very few Russians that live near me and the few that do already speak english so there's no need to speak to them in Russian. When it comes to learning a language, nothing beats an actual class with an instructor talking to you in the language and where you're forced to do activities and chit or literal immersionby just living in the country. I've tried all sorts of language learning software and I can't retain anything on those. Whats worse is that I was learning some stuff the wrong way. Before I took RussianI spend a couple of months really cramming for Russian with Pimseulrand a lot of what I learned was incorrect grammar or I was speaking using feminine suffixes.
Having "crammed a language with Pimsleur" already myself, I know the limitations of the program. As you said, it doesn't provide the best grammatical foundation, but for me it's good for one of the most important steps in language learning and that's just speaking the language. I took 3 years of classroom Spanish in high school and can barely speak a word of it because we drilled grammar to the point of me hating language learning all together. Pimsleur does a good job of walking a true beginner through the basic phonetics of a language, then you have to jump on Assimil + add an italki tutor to get grammar knowledge and real world use.

FLOTD:
I had a 45minute italki session today. It was my first time speaking French off the top of the head to another French person since August. Humbling to say the least BUT I didn't do as bad as I thought. I scheduled another lesson with her next Wednesday because we vibed well, she kept a good google doc page with the correction of my errors and wasn't too expensive.

On that Memrise and Duolingo time for starting off at the basics in Russian. Got a course done previously to get the Cyrillic alphabet down. I'm familiar with the majority of characters and can recognize which sound each makes. Now with enough repetition the brain will be able to put it together quicker so I'm not reading out the words so slowly, stopping and thinking about each individual character as I go. It's a fun challenge, I must say.
For a long time been thinking about looking into Latin, and if I can get Cyrillic down I'm sure I can get Latin down (way later on of course, maybe in a future year).

I speak French/English (dual French/America citizen), so I technically have two first languages.
I started learning Spanish ~August of last year. I could basically already read it pretty much fluently due to the French.
I started Korean at the end of December.
Hoping to be fluent-ish in Spanish by the end of the year.
Hoping to maybe be able to "get around" in Korean by the end of the year.

First time I became interested in foreign languages when I was early 20s. I was hooked on 70s European Rock music, especially progressive bands. Among them the first passion were Italian bands. (like Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Le Orme, Osanna, New Trolls, Museo Rosenbach and so on....)
Here in Japan, currently NHK (nihon hoso kyokai = Japan Broadcasting Corporation) has 11 language programs for both radio and TV. But unfortunately, when I was early 20s there were only 6 programs (English, French, German, Spanish, Russian and Chinese).
* The current 11 programs (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Korean and Chinese)
Textbook for each program is published monthly and available at book stores, cost only a few bucks. $2 in 40 years ago (I was 20), now cost over $4....
So I started studying 5 of them (English, French, German, Spanish and Russian) by listening and watching those programs both radio and TV. I recorded diligently every program with cassette tape recorder. Although I just learned very basic grammar and pronunciation rule of spelling, what I learned these days, the basic knowledge of foreign language in general, has helped me a great deal with learning English later in my life.
Uh-oh, it's about time for me to stop my blabbering, sorry.

My reading is far, far better than listening and speaking, which is kind of the opposite that I expected when I first started learning chinese!

Knowing how hard/long learning Chinese takes, makes me very hesitant to start Japanese though.

I was tempted to drop the language all together, but I would go on to meet a French girl that would then become my girlfriend. With her, I got more deeply intertwined into the French culture, being invited over to a French family's home for Christmas was a big eye opener. Also discovered smaller towns like Strasbourg and really rekindled my passion for wanting to improve upon the base I had.
Ultimately I realized me being turned off from French due to the attitude of the Parisians, is like someone going to New York City with only an A2 level of English and being upset that people are rude and impatient.

I don't recall seeing Reversocontext mentioned in the thread. I can't post links yet, so just google it if your interested.
It is the best aid I have when trying to write in my target language. At least, the Russian section of it works well; I can't vouch for any other languages. It will put the words you are looking for in their proper context. Its much better than just looking up a word in a dictionary. Particularly I find it useful for learning how to express concepts I haven't yet come across. I.e. to learn how a Russian would express going up the stairs, etc. Hope it helps.
Mosfilm also has a great selection of free Russian films on youtube, most of them subtitled in English. I would encourage you all to check that out too.

Dammit... I think I messed up.
I decided to learn Esperanto, because of it's researched ability to help people learn other languages.
I was under the impression that there was a community of Esperanto speakers beyond forums, in things like live text chats and video chats. I was aware of Discords and ********s, but they are phuckin dead!
Barely any conversations happening, though forums are generally lively.
That wouldn't have bothered me if there was some content that I could enjoy, but the content for Esperanto is dead too...
I thought learning this language for 6 months would help me learn Spanish quicker and more thoroughly (as the research showed)... I'm not sure if it's worth it.
Ah well, if I choose to switch up, it's only 25 days of the year.

Have you lived in China?
Have the Chinese people you've met consistently been horrible to you?
My best friend is Chinese, he's a good dude. Though he tells me that he hates the culture of materialism that is found in many Chinese communities.
You honestly haven't found any decent people who are Chinese?

Now it's simply a habit for me to do language learning. At a minimum I do approx 50Xp of Duolingo a day.

You already understand how a tonal language works, and you already know a language that has strong Latin and Germanic foundation.
I got you...
Stuart Jay Raj is a Polyglot and has a degree in Linguistics.
He recommends the book:
Cracking the Chinese Puzzles (Abridged Version) by Zijie An. It's a story, that creates Mnemonics to learn Chinese Characters.

I say this from a non-flame angle, a supportive one.
You need to pick a language. Pick a method, and do that method to completion.
You know tons of highly recommended books for multiple languages. You know what polyglots frown upon, and you know what are less than optimal study mediums (Rosetta Stone). Now I'm finding outyou're learning a language, so that you can more easily learn a language.Bro...
I was victim of this too for awhile when I was first trying to pick up French but you're spending more time "learning how to learn" a foreign language than actually learning a language. Again, I've done this too, laying up at night watching polyglot youtube videos listening to their tips and tricks. Combing the interwebz for blogs that might show me the secret key.
Mane... all of that ain't it. I'm aware Pimsleur's use case is limited but it sounds like you're in desperate need of a framework that keeps you on the straight and narrow. Even if Pimsleur isn't as complete as Assimil it'll at least bring up your muscle memory for speaking your target language in question. In my opinion you need to throw out all of the youtube videos, all the books, even duolingo and just focus on completing Pimsleur Spanish 1, and Pimsleur Spanish 2. After that pick up Assimil Spanish and an italki teacher and stop looking for some secret sauce that's going to "unlock" the language for you.
Learning a language is nothing more than repetition, repetition, consistency, and more repetition. If you keep jumping from program to program you're going to spend all of 2019 trying to learn Spanish and not even reach A2 when anyone could realistically reach that level in 5 months.

I appreciate the advice, but that doesn't describe me. I did that phase before I began learning.Anything I do related to langauges these days is largely just learning the language.
I can understand why you got the impression that I don't learn, and just spend my time looking into how to learn.
The reason what prompted the previous post, was because I believe I had got to the phase where I want to start speaking with people. Today I was frustrated to find that there is much opportunity to practice. I hope that clears things up.
(Edit: The reason why I was able to recommend a bunch of things to people, is because I gathered that information last year, I didn't do that research after they asked the question. It was from memory.)

First language is Esperanto. I'm not sure about the second language, I will try to make it a language that I can practice locally (we have a big EU immigrant community where I live).
I'm curious why you bolded those parts of what I wrote?

Ok brahs, just started Assimil for German. As I posted 2 days ago, the plan is to dedicate 30-60 minutes per day.
First 3 lessons went nicely. Couldn't tell from the audio how to pronounce Nicht and Auch though, had to youtube their pronunciation.

Spent almost an hour and half doing text chatting in a chatroom.
I was complaining before that the chatrooms were dead, but it seemed like everyone was waiting around for someone to start talking, so I basically carried the conversation and met people from; Spain, Belgium, Brazil, Russia, and France.
Google Translate helped.
Something I'm going to try to do everyday.

Been reviewing early lessons for italian and i've caught on to it quick. This is gonna be fun. Gonna dedicate an hour or so for Italian, even replacing some video game time with learning this language. Want to get that one under my belt and in the future study some Jap, or whatever I feel like learning.

Just want to parrot on what was said about studying. I also spent so much time watching and reading videos about learning how to study and not actually studying. Find something and stick with it. Just keep progressing at the one thing and maybe add in another thing like a flash cards or watching some videos in your spare time.
I tried doing so many different things at first and just learned the same words over and over again

FLOTD: French series translation.
Netflix Series: "Call My Agent" Season 1 Episode 1.
Watched the series with French audio, and French subtitles. I watched the episode with a notebook and wrote down every phrase I didn't understand in the notebook. When the episode was over, I had 35 phrases in my notebook.PROTIP:Plug each phrase in google translate, and click the "star" to the right of the translation. After that erase it, then repeat until you've entered and "starred" each phrase. When you're done click the "Saved" star circle on the bottom.

That'll bring up a history of all your starred/saved phrases. And if you click that black grid icon to the right of the word "Sort", it'll display a google spreadsheet of all your translated phrases. I'm about to skim through them on my phone while I do some evening cardio. #LifeMaxing
