Assimil Using French - Lesson 8 completed.

I've also had 3 italki Skype tutoring sessions since my last post. I'll be in the Cote d'Azur next month for vacation so will get ALL KINDZ of French input.

Have been finding anki flash cards super helpful when I'm feeling not lazy - constantly looking up conjugations of the verbs on there so i find that takes effort.

Been awhile...

Haven’t been doing as much practice lately because I’ve been so busy with school but I’m kicking it up a notch.

Still practicing on Duolingo, listening to music, and practicing speaking with friends. By the end of the year, I should have a very strong foundation in Spanish if all goes well lol.

Michel Thomas has been pretty good, I just started his lessons and they seem to stick. As for apps I've switched from Duolingo to babbel. Free is hard to beat but I felt like I was getting more out of babbel. $40 for a year subscription once they send you a "discount" code. Also, found this site Yabla that provides you with a good mix of videos with transcripts, might sub for a month and see how much I like it.

Duolingo stories, Yabla and LingQ look like a great combination for people who want simultaneous audio + transcript learning.

Do you have lots of Spanish speakers in San Diego to practice with? Feel like I need more practice speaking, which can be difficult to get up here.

All hard brah.

If you check the OP, I show the US state's ranking of difficulty for English speakers.

Asian tonal languages are the hardest.

Mandarin's grammar is supposed to be very simple, so that is an advantage. Mandarin and Japanese probably have the most resources for learning and tutors, so that's what would probably make them easier than Korean or Cantonese.

Finished lesson 18 of Pimsleur Russian 1 this morning. It's really intuitive considering I knew next to nothing about Russian going into it. It takes next to no effort to listen along and get better every day. I just wish there was a writing aspect to it. I have had to get other resources to learn the alphabet and really haven't made much progress yet. Highly recommend it though. Wish I could chat with some native speakers but my vocabulary would be too limited for a real actual conversation, and pen pals won't work without me knowing the alphabet.

Start playing World of Warcraft and join a spanish server lol.
what's the babbel app like? I'm getting a bit bored of Duolingo...
It It's honestly not all that different from Duolingo, but for some reason I just go automatic mode putting words together instead of actually learning with duolingo. Babbel splits the lessons so you translate for a few words, listen for a few, spelling, etc. Budget Rosetta Stone. If you're hurting for money I wouldn't bother switching. If you're bored I would give Yabla a look.

That's an awesome idea. Don't play video games anymore but ill try to find an online Spanish community somehow.

Will probably give babbel a try when I get bored of memrise - it's keeping me interested atm.

Will check out yabla thanks!!

I'm still here. I've made a lot of progress with Russian, and it was this thread that sort of re-sparked my interest. Shame to see it go so inactive for the past few weeks. I'm currently working my way through a series of Russian podcasts about Warhammer 40k on youtube.
