People go to work to make a living, just like everyone else. We aren't there to hang out and do community service. There is a value to skills and the work being performed. The problem starts with the pay structure. Most places pay flat rate pay, which is a crappy system where you just get paid for what you do but that's it. If you aren't working, you aren't getting paid. So mechanics have to stay busy. Despite what you're paying, most mechanics don't make much money, so they have to really upsell and milk everything to make a living, especially the lower end guys who are limited to what they can do. Unfortunately, it's hard to be honest in the field and make a decent living. Some people exaggerate and even flat out lie to make a buck. The worse are lube guys.

I don't do many services on people's cars. Almost everything I do is warranty. I'm a specialist, which has it's pro's and con's. The guys that know what they are really doing, who the company has put a lot of time and money into to train, they are more or less reserved for doing work for the manufacturer. I've been doing it for 20 years or so now, went to school for it, have all my own tools, (just bought a new toolbox, you don't even want to know how much it was) and I was flown all over the country to learn specialties. I do, sometimes get work directly from the customer, but it won't be fluids, brakes, or anything like that, it will be a drivability issue. I have a strong belief in being honest because what goes around comes around, and if you can't be honest and make a living maybe you need to do something else.

^^ Has a point. Also today there's practically a youtube on how to diagnose, replace, fix practically anything on every car model. There's even youtubes on reverse engineering and fixing Teslas, salvaging batteries from electric cars through breaking them apart and replacing the cells, etc.

It's all about having the time and having the right tools. Most auto maintenance is pretty easy if you have the right tools. There are car computers now that practically do all the troubleshooting for you on the newer cars, then you just swap out the part.

Ever since I started driving foreign cars I haven't had a single mechanical problem or have had to do any unscheduled maintenance of any kind. It's usually the older, cheaper American cars that are constantly breaking down requiring maintenance and repair on a regular basis. Poor design and cheap parts are the root cause of most problems, even with how crazy people drive.

Taking a leap from doing simple auto maintenance to writing code? That's a stretch.
