You're right.. I appreciate that I've been employable and have maintained employment throughout these years. A lot of people cannot speak to that. The underlying concern of mine is that I'm doing what I'm doing now for the wrong reasons. Retirement funding, checks and insurance are fantastic but if I were receiving all the above in a field I love.. it'd be that much better.

I have all sorts of hobbies.

My job does not have a hindrance on my hobbies.. though it sucks I only get 2 days a week to play. Also, getting time off is hard because there's so much GD work. Take a day off get 4 days behind. There's definitely hesitation to use vacation days.. and there shouldn't be. Maybe the job does have a hindrance after all.

Yes, and the feeling is inevitable unless you own the buisness or are compensated heavily based on performance. I'm about to be 30 and feel like this career chit is for the birds. Only thing i can tell you is to invest heavily and have 0 debt so you can do anything you want and not worry about the man coming in and taking your chit. Financial freedom opens up massive doors. The problem with Western society is that the media has convinced us to consume at a rate greater than our salaries allow, thus turning you into the rat in the wheel who doesn't stop until you're too old to do anything but retire. Gotta bust out of that consumer mindset and live life on your terms to be truly happy.

some people would kill for a consistent 2 day off a week schedule.

if you really enjoy your hobbies you make time for them. so depending on how much you enjoy your hobbies you may need to find a different job with more flexibility, but if your job's income/benefits is what enables to enjoy said hobby, you need to reevaluate your off work time management.

Jobs in general suck. I'm fortunate that I can take on term positions (1-2 years) from time to time to mix things up (as they say a change is as good as a rest) but after the novelty of the new job/challenge wears off it's all basically the same shyt.

I don't know what the answer is, we're debt free and I don't feel any more free than I did when I had a mortgage

I should have been more specific -- the weekends are the only time I get to play. I had more flexibility at my other job because I could telecommute if I had too and I essentially worked whenever I wanted (as long as I got my 40 hours in). This allowed for more playtime, but the work was boring, monotonous and unfulfilling. I was warming a seat for a check basically.

Now.. being an employed where I'm at currently--- we're in at 8:00am out at 430pm. Insane amounts of work, taking time off is chitty because it puts so you far behind. Great pay and benefits though. Hard to find a happy medium in this industry so I truly think my answer would be to shift gears.

another option is move closer too work?

how long is your commute, plenty of what you listed as hobbies can be done at home.

also some of your hobbies sound more leisure...

eating is a now a hobby?

What does IOTW mean? These are my hobbies and outlets for escape. But yes, I'm know where my interests and passions are and it's not stuck behind a desk doing excel data.

My commute time has nothing to do with my unhappiness with the career path I've chosen.. lol. I'm 10 minutes from home if it makes any difference.

Hobby/leisure is all the same to me.

I owned and operated a Bakery so yeah, eating is a hobby of mine.

I work from my office at home for apple doing tech database administration and have a e commerce business worth 6 figures.

I'm winning but it's whatever the only perk is I get food no charge for free delivered to me off my companies dime. So I'm spending at least 150 everyday in jus food alone hahah.

it's truly not the lack of enjoying or not partaking in the hobbies. It's more or less me being emotionally drained with the energy I'm putting forth to make the dough.

If I'm working as hard as I am and getting no sort of reciprocation other than a check, health insurance and retirement savings, what am I even doing? I need to leave at the end of day feeling like I made a difference and did something to better someone or something else, not my own self. This industry does not promote personal growth..other than the fact that it ages you quicker than chit. There are people here that are STUCK and look like they should be in a retirement home. One lady wreaks of alcohol and always talks about her drinking routine: "Ohhhh I can't wait to get home to have my two tallboy ice houses". Pretty sure she leaves on her lunch to drink too.

hobbies shouldn't be emotionally draining brah, you do hobbies because they bring you joy in the process. do you want more free time to pursue hobbies, or just want a different job?

it sounds like you have ample time to enjoy hobbies

Your career should be your passion and if I'm going to expend all this energy for a job or career that I'm not passionate about and that won't have a lasting impact, what am I even doing?

I literally had the WTF moment about this 11 year career stint a few days ago. Hit me pretty hard too. I do have goals and that's why I'm going to be making some changes to meet and exceed what I've set for myself.

I've always had a passion for the human services field so I'll probably start my M.S. in Psychology and make a pursuit in AAT or something similar. I've had my BS for a long time but never continued on because I got married and wanted to play house. Kinda fuq'D chit up per-say.

What started as a hobby, something fun that I loved learning about and doing ended up turning into a career and I couldn't be happier at this point. At the end of June I will be at my current company (started as desktop support but have been IT manager for the last 6 years) for 15 years. It can be pretty dull sometimes but we get to work on a lot of cool stuff that I still enjoy.

If your current path doesn't satisfy you then there's nothing wrong with working towards changing it even if it's completely opposite.

That's exactly what I'm trying to convey here. I fell into the career I have now while working towards something which would have put me in a completely different realm. Made myself stuck because I got comfortable. I had great benefits, flexibility and pay.. but that was it. 11 years later, kind of raging at myself for being so deluded

By the time I’d been working for 11 years I’d had three careers (public relations, lawyer, economist). Later on I changed again to auditing (external then internal).

Life’s too short to work st a job that a) you don’t enjoy and b) isn’t what you’re best at

If you have a passion for something then job you have should be more enjoyable,tolerable and more fulfilling. For some reason there's this underlying notion that JOBS suck and they aren't supposed to be enjoyable. Hell, there are truck drivers who LOVE driving, love traveling, love the isolation etc... and they wholeheartedly enjoy their jobs. There's even a guy on this thread who loves being an IT manager because he's passionate about what he does. I can't speak to his level of his enjoyment but he sounded rather pleased and satisfied.

I'd work for free if I didn't need the money. But since that isn't possible at this time, I want to enjoy what I'm doing while earning that dough.
