The research is there. Read this if you are serious about this:

Clearer thinking / Reduced 'brain fog' - Normalized acetylcholine levels

Pornography viewing has been shown to lower acetylcholine levels, a neurotransmitter vital for cognitive functioning. When cholinergic signaling is reduced, a subjective sense of 'brain fog' results.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4600144/

Reduced sexual dysfunction - Dopamine receptor upregulation

The mesolimbic pathway of the central nervous system receives excitatory inputs from dopaminergic neurons throughout various other brain regions. Reduced dopaminergic signaling, resulting from pornography viewing, is thought to be the primary cause of pornography-induced erectile dysfunction.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5039517/

Alleviation of depressive symptoms - Regulation of multiple neurological pathways

Alterations in the functionality of many brain regions, particularly those related to the dopaminergic system, have been shown to induce hypersexual behaviour. Many of these same brain regions are thought to malfunction in the case of depressive disorders. Abstinence from pornography viewing regulates these malfunctioning pathways.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/scienc...7477421630068X

Increased confidence - Spike in testosterone levels

According to researchers from Zhejiang University, abstinence from ejaculation caused a 146 percent increase in testosterone levels on the seventh day, while testosterone levels were not significantly influenced for 6 days prior.

I believe the whole movement needs to be redirected, fapping is not bad for you, certainly not a few times a week. What IS bad is PORN. It leads to addiction and exploitation of people and we'd be better off without it. What did we do before hardcore porn? look at pictures of women? We fapped regardless, and you'd be all the better for it not looking up gaping pissing double fisting bbc porn. Look at who is making and profiting from porn, then you'll think twice before watching it.

You have some points, but what about porn negatively programming your brain so that even when you fap without porn it is having negative psychological effects because your imagination is still hard wired to be into that psycologically/soul degrading stuff? Also probably maybe feelings of guilt, lack of self worth or lack of control if you fap even though it's probably less harmful than fapping to porn. Best to just not fap at all.. For at least 90 days, give yourself time to recover/reset and to see for yourself. If you go 90 days without a fap and see nothing has improved so what? Not like you need to fap to survive or be happy or sleep, that's all psychological addiction speaking. For me, I gotta know myself if it works or not and the only way to do that is by doing it. If I don't at least try this I'll be thinking my entire life "What if?".

Somewhat agree, but there is a correlation between fapping and porn. Meaning fapping will lead to porn for most people who have grown up watching porn

One big problem to no fap, is that no fap long term negatively effects test levels, based on research I've seen.

At least once every 7 days is good for you.

(Too lazy right now to pull up the research.)

I do agree though that a big problem is that the brain can become wired to basically porn style fantasies when it comes to fapping.

When I've gone of long runs of no porn, my fantasies began to revolve around women's bodies and me having sex with them. Instead of replaying porn films in my mind.

So I do think that a "90 day reset" is probably a good idea, especially for the guys who grew up with unlimited streaming porn.

Good point, but nofap positively effects test levels:

Increased confidence - Spike in testosterone levels

This is 100% correct, these people are doing damage to themselves following some bullshyt fad that has been debunked time and time again.

"Hey all,

So I have a fairly extensive knowledge of biology and the endocrine system. I've done an enormous amount of research on my own, and I'm also in the process of getting my EMT Advanced (one level below paramedic) certification.

I want to debunk the study that a lot of PMO addicts throw around to argue against nofap. I know you've all seen it.

The study that shows testosterone peaks on day 7 and then returns to normal afterwards.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1...?dopt=Abstract

Yeah, so I'm here to say that it's only partially correct.

You see, the way that your body works is like this: certain hormones float around in your bloodstream until they find a receptor to bind to. Your body doesn't use the hormones/chemicals until they actually bind to a receptor. Until they bind to a receptor, they just float around in your blood stream waiting to be used.

When you're PMOing every day, your blood stream is loaded with an excess of dopamine and estrogen, so what happens after a while? Dopamine and estrogen bind to what are called "androgen receptors," in your body. This is why when you constantly PMO you're fatigued, emotionally numb, and have brain fog.

Now, as the study shows - your testosterone peaks on day 7 and goes way down on day 8.

So what's the catch?

Well, the study measured SERUM TESTOSTERONE, which is the testosterone that's floating around in your bloodstream.

In other words, your body isn't using it...yet.

On day 8, however, the testosterone in your bloodstream plummets.

Why? Basically, your body notices an excess of testosterone that it hasn't been using yet. So what does it do? It kicks out the dopamine and estrogen, so that testosterone can BIND TO THE ANDROGEN RECEPTORS that dopamine and estrogen were previously occupying.

In other words, the reason that serum testosterone drops on day 8 is because your body actually uses it. That's when it binds to your androgen receptors.

That's why most of the effects like a deeper voice, more energy, etc. come after the 7 day mark - it's because your body's finally starting to get rid of the estrogen and dopamine, so that your testosterone can bind to androgen receptors.

tl;dr - Nofap increases testosterone. The study is just presented in such a way that people without biological knowledge thinks it's only temporary."

Response 1:

"More thoughts on OP's claims:
When you're PMOing every day, your blood stream is loaded with an excess of dopamine and estrogen, so what happens after a while?
There no studies that have found either. Moreover, the dopamine in the serum arises from primarily the adrenal glands, and does not cross the blood brain barrier. Blood dopamine has nothing to do with dopamine released in the reward system or hypothalamus (where erections are controlled).
On day 8, however, the testosterone in your bloodstream plummets.
Studies on ejaculation say otherwise.

In the Chinese study, after the one day spike, testosterone returned to baseline from day 8 through day 16 when the experiment ended. -http://www.zju.edu.cn/jzus/2003/0302/030219.pdf

A 3 week study found no change in baseline T after 3 weeks of abstinence (The abstract wording incorrectly suggests a increase in T, but the full study reveals what the authors really meant: T levels did not drop as much during masturbation to a film.)http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11760788
That's why most of the effects like a deeper voice, more energy, etc. come after the 7 day mark - it's because your body's finally starting to get rid of the estrogen and dopamine, so that your testosterone can bind to androgen receptors.
I think the OP is alluding to various rat studies that find that ejaculation causes a decrease in BRAIN androgen receptors (not the androgen receptors in the tissues). The more the rat ejaculates, the greater the decease in androgen receptors. It takes about 4 days for the androgen receptors to return to baseline, yet it takes 15 days for the rat to full sexual power. Meaning other neurochemical events are in play. One such study -http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12914589#

Not only does ejaculation reduce brain androgen receptors it results in a greater density of brain estrogen receptors. Ejaculation also increases brain opioids that dampen libido.http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20875461

As for dopamine, ejaculation initiates structural changes in the dopamine-producing nerve cells of the reward circuit - specifically the VTA. The nerve cell bodies in the VTA decreased in size, and stay that way for at least 7 days (measurements were taken at 1, 7, and 30 days). The VTA supplies most of the dopamine for other reward circuit structures.http://www.jneurosci.org/content/34/26/8825.long

In addition, ejaculation led to the rats being less responsive to injected morphine, indicating a (temporarily) numbed pleasure response. Keep in mind that dopamine is behind craving and wanting, whereas most of the pleasure of sex arises from opioids released in the reward circuit.

Bottom line: ejaculation led to a decline in reward circuit dopamine, and a numbed pleasure response, which lasted at least 7 days, and probably longer."

Response 2:

Ok, I usually hold myself off commenting, but seeing that OP is claiming this to be "a fact" rahter than his own opinion, makes it all different. I don't mind downvotes because I made this account just to comment this.

Firstly, OP is trying to boost his/her credibility by saying he/she is in the medical field. EMT, a technician! Not even in biology, let alone actual MD. Not to mention, in the true world of science, the title shouldn't even mean anything.

Secondly, no proof whatsoever. none. period. Only thing I can say here is that the article OP is criticising doesn't have a high impact factor (~1, which is very low, compared to, say New England Journal of Medicine's 55) but the article is still published in a peer reviewd journal. However that's another topic. OP provides no references to any of the claims.

Thirdly, although some of the key concepts are correct, some are also wrong. What happens if the prerequisites are incorrect? You get a wrong conclusion. And that's only about the key concepts. In medicine, almost nothing can be explained by a simple key concept, there are just so many factors influencing any outcome that it needs to be verified by actual studies not by just adding up A +B = C on paper.

Some errors: OP claims dopamine binds to androgen receptors and is disabling them (or what?). How, I ask, where's the reference? Especially in healthy men who have no dopamine (or estrogen) producing adenoma or genetic defects. In a physically healthy male, no amount of PMO or any other addictive behaviour can produce enough dopamine or estrogen to cause androgen receptors to become inactive.

While it is true that hormone in the serum is not "active" in a sense that it needs to be bound to its receptor, serum hormone levels are still a reliable source of measuring hormone activity as the more of serum hormone we have (higher concentration) the higher the probability that the hormone molecule finds its receptor on the cell. So if the serum level decreases, chances are that less hormone gets bound to its receptor.

So please, posts like these is why this place is being called pseudo(brah)-science and a cult. Someone just presents a few lines of seemingly logical text and people believe it because it looks smart. If you want to offer your theory, just say "my opinion" and start a friendly discussion.

I believe that No Porn is legit, but the No Fap movement reminds me of veganism.

A lot of Vegans probably become healthier (short term), due to cutting out processed foods and dairy.

Just like a lot of No Fap followers become healthier, due to cutting out Porn.

Nofap is real

There is bot scientific proof that porn is damaging to your brain because of the overstimulation of your dopamine receptors and ancient wisdom about the benefits of semen retention
I got this

Not really, I tried no fap for 8 days, on the 9th day I gave in and pretty much wanked for 30 seconds and finished without any stimuli. What I'm saying is, if you eliminate porn, you'll find yourself fapping less

I’m all the proof you need. Porn/masterbation destroyed my sexy life. Don’t even have one. 40 years old and it doesnt work on a real woman. I get hard af for porn but put a woman in my bed and nothing. Porn has damaged me possibly beyond repair. What more data do you need.

No offence (and I agree that porn is toxic), but 1 person's testimony is not enough evidence

If you abstain from porn for 6 months to a year, you'll likely get your sensitivity to real women back.

It’s been an impossible addiction. But something I know I need to work on. Have yet to go more than 30 days. What makes it so hard is all the triggers I’m around. There many people with the same testimony as mine on other forums.

I feel you brah, at one point I was addicted.

I hope you break the addiction.

You're not damaged beyond repair. Neuroplasticity is reality (as you probably know).

Also, (if you haven't already gotten this advice), I wouldn't advise looking at it as 'making it to 30 days', but more '30 days without porn' (if that makes sense).

Every stretch you have without porn (no matter how big or small) is good for your brain.

This forum probably doesn't help regarding triggers... I hope you stay out of the LTC, HTC, and 'rate this girl' threads.

Do you have an religious or spiritual beliefs?

u can get off this vicious cycle. u need to get rid off triggers. would seriously consider going back to flip phone and use minimal amount of internet.
