Unless you live in a slave state or are totally broke, you should buy an AR15. Shotguns typically get purchased, put in a closet, and then never used. ARs are fun to take out, you can shoot them relatively cheaply, and just about every indoor & outdoor range in the country will let you shoot an AR there.

On top of that it's much easier to shoot an AR accurately in a home Defense situation, with much better incapacitation than a pistol.

To summarize:
-Easier to shoot
-More accurate (less likely to put a bullet in something other than who you're aiming at)
-More likely to actually be practiced with, allowing shooter to be competent.

That assumes that it's a burglary and not something worse.

Plenty of people in Tornado alley have Tornado shelters. Plenty of people in the Coastal SE have generators for hurricane season. Plenty of people in the Northern states have generators for when a blizzard comes and knocks the power out.

Having an alarm system, door locks, and a gun are basic elements of having a residence.

Otherwise you're just trusting the goodwill of other people for your personal safety.

If you live in a suburb I woouldn't recommend an Ar15. Those bullets can go through 3 house if you misplace a shot.

1. Wrong. A 5.56 round will penetrate the same number of interior and exterior walls as a shotgun or handgun due to bullet construction.

2. The AR15 is less likely to go into anything other than your target.

It's degrading, but not worth losing your life over. This guy will spend the rest of his life getting ass-raped in the prison showers and sucking his fair share of dinks because of his decisions. The couple will hopefully be able to put this behind them, be thankful they're alive, and move forward.

I once got 'mugged' when I was younger and it was completely random. I used to make fires in the forests and go camping with my gf and some friends. One night, I was with my buddy and my girlfriend, and 4 guys with bats just came up to us, started shoving me around an demanded we 'empty our pockets.' I was drunk and giving the douche a lot of lip so he kept shoving me in the chest with the bat and yelling for money. In the end, he got 20$ and I had some bruises on my collarbones. I spent a lot of time afterwards contemplating how else it could have worked out. It's a degrading, shameful feeling. I kept having thoughts that I should have fought back, but no matter how I thought of it, the way it played out was the best way. What If I had tried to fight back, he knocked me out, and took it out on my girl?

Terrible situation. Glad that POS is going to rot in a cell.

That's the next step, I keep the safe with the G19 under my night stand next to my bed. Next I'll buy a larger safe for my closet with an AR pistol with a 6" or 9" barrel.
