Wrapping up my ten days in Germany. The study I did was incredibly helpful.

On to Spanish when I get back to the US.

just finished 5 weeks of class, only one 2 hour class per week - but this was enough to keep me motivated to do daily study over the 5 weeks which was the biggest factor in making some decent gains.

I wish we had classes like that here for Spanish, it just isn't popular enough. Had to find a 1 on 1 teacher.

Since I left China till I get my bachelors and in nursing school currently, I havent gone back to studying mandarin. I really should for a hobby, however, there are not many mandarin language learners around my area and its lame. I know enough to self-study and converse in it.

Been in Malta the last week. Very unique country. European but a mix of Greek and Turkish influences. Between the locals and vacationers you mostly hear Greek, English, Italian, and French.

Had to have a couple conversations in French and I was very happy with my level of communication. I stumbled a bit when needing to switch tenses and when it came to comprehending everything said to me but it was enough to have some cool conversations.

Currently in Sicily and English does not go far at all outside of a hotel or airport. Went to my trusty Pimsleur and drill the lessons during my down time. Helps a TON in regards to survival Italian. Asking where things, saying what I’d like to order etc. Just getting through the first 12 lessons has helped

I wouldn’t try to have a conversation with a local but for basic maneuvering and ordering purposes pimsleur has been gold.

Next day in Italy. Pimsleur practice has got my pronunciation and speaking level to the point where when I ask for something or say something in Italian, the person assumes I’m fluent and launches an assault of rapid Italian back at me. Flattering but it sucks lol. Need to build my ear up but on the other hand I don’t feel a need because I likely won’t be needing to encounter this language again in the foreseeable future

LOL!

Good job man.

Learning languages I've realized that my memory really isn't that good without massive amounts of repetition (and I'm definitely no 'natural'), so Pimsleur looks like it is a good fit, because I know they drill phrases into your head.

Back from vacay. Went to Malta and Italy. Malta has a really odd history and you can easily find greek, Turkish, English, French, and Italian spoken on the island with little struggle. Was there for maybe 4 or 5 days and used French to talk with people maybe 3 of those days. one of those days was just talking to girls I heard speaking French in a bar. I honestly don't think there is a better ice breaker than saying "What city in XYZCountry are you from?" in your target language to girls that are from the country when you are clearly not from that country. Their eyes seriously light up like "holy chit!"

When I flew to Italy from Malta, flight got delayed and there was this French guy that came up to me and said "sorry I speak very little English but what is problem with plane?" I proceeded to explain that we were delayed due to weather and the guy bought me a drink at the bar.

Went to Catania Sicily and ended up using a hybrid blend of 2 weeks Pimsleur Italian study and my solid French to due just about everything. Chances are if you're not in a hotel, airport, or tourist bar then the people speak a very low level of English so that got me around the region well.

My flight back to the states was from London so I flew there the day before heading home to do one more night out in London. Went out to a club in Soho, some girl spilled her drink on my shoes and my drunk reaction was to say "Putain!" (fuk in French). Then out of nowhere some Russian girl behind me turns me around and says "vous parlez Francais!? J'ai etudié francaise à Paris!" we ended up hitting it off and smashing. Never in a million years did I think theFrenchlanguage would be the linking factor in smashing aRussiangirl inEngland. lol doesn't even make sense.

Anyways, that whole culture mashup was exactly what I needed to rekindle the flame. It's such a cool feeling being in strange lands and interacting with other people in a foreign language. I'll definitely be bringing this thread back up to speed.

Only time I get to speak mandarin is when I see the interpreter at my job and he has 5 mins to spare. Or I drive a hour to flushing queens where it’s the largest Chinatown in America and most speak mandarin. But I have a wife and kids that take priority so I only go there every once and a while lately.

italki is way better than any other language school I've tried. I paid $400 to do a full course at one of the many "L'alliance Française" in the USA. And it was basically subjecting myself to the same pathetic, dry, grammer book drilling that one would experience in highschool and college.

When I was in paris I paid around the same price for a once a week group class at a language school but i found it annoying. Teacher was a bit of an arrogant ****, and there was a fair bit of waiting around to speak.

with italki, the good experiences outweigh the bad. the worst options are americans who become fluent and then want to teach the foreign language. Always go with a native who has had some background of teaching their language to foreigners. They're not terribly expensive either. Can range from $15 to $28 per hour for 1 on 1 instruction. That'd cost $45 at a L'alliance Francaise branch.

Foreign Study of the Day: Pimsleur French III - Unit 6

Easy peasy, but wanted to start with some overlap rather than jumping into Unit 20 or Pimsleur French IV series. Will do Unit 7 either later today or tomorrow.

We back in the game brahs.

Ya was looking at native speakers and for the price it defiantly looks like the right choice.

Although I'm the thread starter, I haven't been updating because honestly my progress is disappointingly slow. However, I realize that posting is good to keep us motivated through trying, even if we have slow progress.

I was focusing on reading the past 2 months (short stories), but now I try to spend 30 mins to 1hr a day using Memrise.com (an audio and text space repetition system). I realized that I need massive amounts of repetition and variety for something to stick in my brain.

Plus I like the competitive side of Memrise, trying to climb up the weekly and monthly leaderboards. (I realize that some people are beasts, who must spend at least 2-3 hours a day learning the same course that I am doing. Srs.)

I also play computer games in the target language.

Good vid that popped on in my youtube vid the other day...

Foreign Language of the day: Pimsleur French III Lesson 9

Took the weekend off but jumped on again today after work just to keep the language fresh in my mind. Honestly though, even the third level of Pimsleur's French is a bit easy for me so I think I'm going to start injecting two, maybe even three lessons into my work day to progress quicker through the system.

The reason why I'm not skipping lessons is because while I'm not learning any new vocabulary, it is introducing some situational phrases that I've fuked up in real world use of the language. So rather then giving hyper focused 1-on-1 attention to these lessons, I'm just going to burn through Stage 3 while I work until I run into complicated material. It's either that or I'm safely at a level where I can pick up Russian again without losing my French. Stlll feeling like a badass confidence-wise from my French use during my euro trip.

Even if you know the vocab the sentence structures are always good and so is the listening practice.

Been working on my textbook and doing the audio and video with it. Also did another chapter of pimsluer
