Well, Sansaisthe absolute bloody worst. She didn't even suffer any repercussions for being an oathbreaker, which was especially egregious having taken said oath under the Weirwood tree.

As for Dany, I noticed the same thing during my rewatch before the final season, and once you've taken in a concentrated dosage of Daenerys, her entire arc is very much wavering towards a conqueror - albeit one who began with pure intentions.

We do see subtle hints of her character's shift, such as with your example of Khal Drogo's impassioned speech, Dany evokes this speech first when she recruits the Dothraki as all of her bloodriders, and again once she has destroyed King's Landing. Young, naive Dany might have condoned the gritty details of Khal Drogo's message, but it's difficult to ignore how she was fine channeling the same conceit the first time given her precedent contempt for rape and violence towards innocents.

It's even stranger that she never addresses a need for the Dothraki to change their ways, yet she made Yara swear that an independent Iron Islands would cease their ways of raping and reaving.

Now,devil'sDany's advocate of sorts:

Despite the signs along the way to Dany's turn, the execution was not only poorly handled and terribly rushed, butclearlyexacerbated by the showrunners lack of communication down the line that led to a confused, mixed message until the final hour. Well before Emilia Clarke even knew of her character's fate, she appears to be another victim of the overly secretive direction given to actors for the fear of spoilers that left them grasping at what their true end role was meant to resemble:
"Regardless of the final season’s narrative’s origin, the Thrones writers have planned Dany’s fate for years and have foreshadowed the dark turn in the storyline. In previous seasons, producers would sometimes ask Clarke to play a scene a bit different than what she expected for a seemingly heroic character. “There’s a number of times I’ve been like: ‘Why are you giving me that note?’” Clarke says. “So yes, this has made me look back at all the notes I’ve ever had.”

This is not far fetched when we have main stars like Nicolaj Coster Waldeau now speaking about thisseason's secrecy:
"We got the script - well first you had to download an app because of course, you can't get paper [scripts] anymore - and the scripts came and when you finish them they would magically disappear.
...I dislike it, I like to make notes and stuff and also the weird thing now I have all the other scripts from all the other seasons I don't have the script from season 8 it's a little sad."

While a degree of secrecy is perfectly understandable, when a character'sentire arcrequires depicting a descent into madness rather than a cartoonish freefall, it's self-destructive to the final product to merely give highly vague tugs and nods as to how to perform a role. This would also explain why the incongruous parts of characters' arcs these latter seasons could almost be mistaken for the actors receiving their direction via charades.

It's interesting to imagine how Emilia Clarke might have portrayed Dany throughout the series had she known that her character would require far more nuance to convincingly depict a turn for the worse.

The showrunners' earliest citation of Mad Dany foreshadowing was her apathy towards Drogo murdering her brother, which in the show's depiction I agree.Butthey also chose to ignore the other much more humanizing side of the coin in respect to that incident, as the books also apparently detail Dany immediately exchanging stoicism for agonizing guilt and sadness, blaming herself for her brother's death. And when we analyze the circumstances of that scenario, it really does add up: Viserys crossed a line, writing a check is ass couldn't cash when Dany was finally learning to be empowered in front of Drogo, but once she was not in his presence and the gravity what transpired weighed upon her, Dany was overcome with guilt. Incidentally, it appears that Viserys' death does truly haunt Dany, visions and all, which would have actually been an interesting angle to her later turn.

Throughout most of the series, they clearly wanted their cake and to eat it, too with Dany even throughout the latter seasons when her shades of grey should have been readily apparent for all to see and theorize over. Up until she is literally committing genocide, Dany's "moments" are exclusively shown as triumphant with empowering music swelling behind her.

If we were to pinpoint only one (ha!) glaring omission to Dany's transition from benevolent conqueror, it would be a shift towards disregarding innocent lives. For the mounting evidence that could portend to a far less kindly conqueror through Dany, such as her reliance upon fear to force captured Lannister soldiers to the knees and refusal to take prisoners, there is a distinct absence of her taking out her anger and aggression on the everyday people. Granted, they certainly made sure to insert a sudden misdirection of blame towards the commoners for not overtaking Cersei themselves, but that was both out of the blue in the scheme of her overall character, as well as plain nonsensical when she seems to also agree with Tyrion's stance that they are effectively held hostage.

I can even somewhat buy into the general concept of Dany feeling the need to flex her dragon muscles a bit to instill fear by destroying the Red Keep - a target that she seemingly heads towards at first before veering off to torch civilians - but she has already witnessed the fear that her dragons cause back during the first episode of the season when Northerners, who wereon her side, scattered at the sight of them. But they really turned the "evil" crank to 11 at, well, the eleventh hour, which was far too late for what was already a wanting build up to a darker Dany, let alone the breakneck pace they went with this season.

Anyway, I'm not disagreeing that the foreshadowing was there and unlike the Night King/Arya fan-pandering, I do think that Dany taking a darker turn is a viable enough direction for GRRM to explore, but D&D neglected character building that would require more episodes than Davos has fingers.

D&D: If only we had more time!
HBO: Oh. You can have, like, allthe time. All of it.
D&D: What's that?Lessepisodes?
HBO: Well, fewer, but no. You can hav-
D&D: Okay! You're the boss - Fewer it is, then.

Even if those fukkers signed on for Star Wars later, they had also announced their new HBO
announced their new HBO "Confederate" in 2017, well before GOT wrapped final production. These doofuses were jerking off over some modern slavery fantasy instead of re-reading their first draft of the GOT season 8 script, and despite the backlash regarding such a full-retard premise, HBO is at the momentplanning to continue the showonce D&D are done with Star Wars.
Good summation. If GRRM decides to go with Mad Dany and actually writes it in a convincing and entertaining way then I will suffer in silence. The problem with the show is that they made you root for her for 8 seasons and then turn her into Hitler overnight, only to then blame the viewer for supporting her. It's pathetic, really.

No. She’s been an entitled kunt since season 1. She would’ve gladly had Drogo rape and pillage all the way to the iron throne for since season 1. They’ve been hinting at her tyranny since season 1, it astounds me that people rooted for her to begin with let alone be surprised she destroyed kings landing.

That feel of Emelia Clarke when the character she's played for 8 years as a freer of slaves and champion of the common folk burns the same common folk in the thousands when Cercie, who's been a complete monster from season 1 gets to die crying in her lovers arms venerable and human.

You have a "would have" based on the theoretical actions of a young girl who was recently just sold like a slave

I have 7+ seasons of show canon actions that say otherwise...

sorry bruh. She literally said in Episode 4 "Mercy is our strength." Verbatim.

Yet the previous seasons she showed no mercy.

Season 7 and 8 were brutal, but Dany’s turn was not out of the blue at all. She was already crazy the last few seasons and she lost all her friends in the previous two episodes, plus paranoia everyone was betraying her, especially with jon as the rightful heir. If she was so “good and caring” she would have been like alright Jon you are the rightful king, I will help counsel you, but instead she maintained her entitlement and broke.

It hurts my head to see people think like this.

She was not crazy. Crazy people don't give others choices to live or die or punish only evil people. Also notice she never threatened Jon despite the fact he was telling people about his claim behind her back (likeactual treason) and begged him to keep the secret so they could still be together.

She CLEARLY felt entitled to rule Westeros, she amassed the largest army, believed she was the last heir until 3 episodes ago, and Jon repeatedly voiced disinterest in ruling (which made sharing his secret completely pointless). DuH.

If anyone was crazy, it’s Arya.

Not sure if already posted, but what do you brahs think about this ending? Worth a watch.

Drogo decided to invade Westeros after Robert attempted to assassinate her. Obviously Dany wasn't going to object.

Also,

Dany has no negative reaction to this and goes right along with it because all she really cared about was sitting on the throne. Fast forward to season 8 she rides west on Drogon ( Drogo) and acquires the throne every bit as brutally as Drogo promised.

Just lol@ at ever thinking Dany was a sweet little princess who cared about anything other than conquoring.
Same. Been watching the entire show on rewatch and currently on season 3. I bought all the boxsets a week ago.

Probably my 4th time watching it, but this rewatch is after a lotta years so it definitely feels quite fresh .... And season 1 hoooooly fuk. I got the 4K version and it looked fukkin bonkers on the OLED tv. Felt like I was watching it for the first time again........ Unfortunately UHD isnt available for the other seasons, so while the blu ray looks prett good ... It still doesnt compare to dat dere 4k HDR.

Alt Shift X is pretty defensive about the season, but he inadvertently made a good point about how crazy politics should be in the wake of Dany's death and Jon's exile:

-Iron Islands didn't get independence
-The monarch who legitimized Gendry is dead (I think the show straight up ignores this, because Gendry appears to still be a lord at the council)
-Dorne was once independent under Targaryen rule and didn't get independence
-The ravens about Jon's claim are unaccounted for
-There may be people who want Gendry as king instead because of Robert
-There may be people who want to kill Gendry because Robert was a usurper

Really it's questionable if Westeros is any better off right now.

I really want to know how the Gendry thing played out. Did he just show up at Storm’s End and say "bow ya chits" and everyone was cool with it despite the fact that we have seen nothing of the stormlands? They’d have absolutely no reason to believe or honor that.

That's exactly how the show assumes it went. Unless there was a hint Gendry went to Storms End before Daenerys died, it's questionable at best.

But D&D forgot how maesters worked, so they must've forgot how lordship works too.

Guess I wasn't smart enough to recognize this interdimensional reverse-underwater foreshadowing

Lol this. Made it about 30 seconds in.

None of it makes sense AS PRESENTED. You can add info, make excuses, cherry pick scenes, but the series is over. After episode 4, there was no turning back.

D&D are being panned as some of the worst creators/directors at their level right now. It takes a complete lack of integrity to chit on all of your fans to this magnitude no matter the reason. They red-wedding'd the show.

No more than any other character. Not when you're allowing mercy to most people before executing them.

I mean think about it, the Tarly's, the slave owners, they basically died choosing the stupid option of clinging to their old values in the face of insurmountable odds. They should be blamed more than the executioner.

That's infinitely more thought than the directors put into the show. I like the idea of Arya trying and failing to kill the NK.

i finally finished the series this past weekend. i have to say i was very very disappointed in the finale. the whole last season was very poor compared to the rest of the show. if you go back and watch bits and pieces of past seasons you will see that everything down to even the dialogue exchanges between characters was so far superior in earlier seasons than it was in even the last 2 seasons.

So many hilarious "WTF" reactions from the actors during the table-read shown during the making of special LMAO.
