I was working 40 hours a week, tired as **** because I was working third shift and then taking care of my kids after. I have worked non stop for most of my life and do you know how much it sucks to work that hard and still not make enough money to pay for just the basic necessities. I’ll tell you what happens next- you can try to get help from the state but if you work and make money you’ll get nothing. I did not qualify for **** because in the eyes of the government I make enough money to support a family-it’s simply not true. Financially- id be better off working part time and then collecting all I could from the state. But what would that get me? Probably nothing since that’s still just enough to survive. A degree will open a lot of doors where I can make way more than what I could make now(that’s practically a guarantee, no matter what)
I find it hard to believe that half the miscers replying to threads have any life experience. They’re either pampered and have had it easy or are too young to understand how things really work.

have you considered studying a trade? women tradies are generally treated well and respected on site (from what ive observed). but there needs to be construction booming in your area for this to be a lucrative path.

British perspective, doubt US is much different: a degree of the type you mean, that most people now get, is worthless. You want to stand out from the crowd, a generic business/psychology/admin degree is the opposite of that. It tells me you are a poor decision maker who can’t think through the consequences of their actions.
I didn’t think I was ‘good’ at any one thing, despite being reasonably smart, quite by chance fell into a customer service job and unexpectedly found I was very good at it. Been offered endless promotions since (not taken as don’t need them right now), and that’s against people with generic ‘degrees’ (that I don’t have).
I don’t think you know where your talents/passions are, like me, so your best course might be just to apply for some jobs in areas you had never considered before. Do it for 6 months, see if it’s going somewhere, if not try something else. Whatever you read, employers don’t look down on frequent job switches, it’s expected these days.
It might take you 3 or 4 years, same as college, but you’ll be earning and learning and will eventually fall on your feet

Since you are already doing jobs which you are not fond of and you realized that you will have to struggle whatever you finish means you are already on a good track. My advice is do not major in STEM because you don't have time to learn outside your work which is a necessity in this field. Also I have a feeling this is not where your interest lies in. Business degrees are worthless on their own - I am surrounded by business people and I do not see what the degree brings to the table. The crucial part is that you are intelligent and business driven and I think you might lack one or two, degree just opens the door to get the job. Also, the whole field is saturated with people - anyone who does not know what to study studies that (you as well).
I would recommend you to go into nursing. It is paid well, you don't bring job home, you are a lady so you might enjoy it more than a guy.

I think LPN is only one year. My wife was an LPN before she got her BSN (she's now an RN).

From what it sounds like you have a good work ethic so I would suggest nursing. It is very easy to get a good paying job as a nurse and they are needed everywhere so you would be able to move anywhere you want. I have a finance degree and it worked out for me but it is much less of a "sure thing" than a degree like nursing or education. At your age with your current situation you need to go the route that will guarantee a better life for yourself and children, you don't need to take risks

ok- im not getting a job as a nurse... that's 100% not going to happen.
I'm calling the career center at my school and going to talk to them. I think I am going to change my concentration over to project management. I think I would love to be a project manager on projects. I like the idea of letting companies hire me as a sub-contractor and then pay me a percentage or whatever- I could travel to do this.
I mean this is too early to be so specific but I have ideas and I am very capable of accomplishing whatever I set my mind to..
I will never wipe an elderly ass ok.. maybe someone I love but no.. its not happening, I don't like gruesome ****.. and will never work a job like that. Germs gross me out.. on a list of jobs that michelle should not do nurse is #1

MIT has a project management course. Stanford offers certificates...I did just look this up so yeah wasn’t trolling. If there’s huge projects companies are having done, then normally there’s a project manager managing it so that it goes by smoothly- there’s certain ways to budget for things and whatever else. I took an online course once but it just covered the basics.

Don't look at "the degree" as the goal. Your goal is financial security. The degree is just a step to the goal.
As for which degree - how do you plan to accomplish your goal. What kind of work a)Do you like doing, b)Pays enough that moves you to your goal, and c) Is realistic for you to achieve (based on time constraints, finances, aptitudes, etc.).
Take these into account before listening to a bunch of anonymous people on a message board.

michelle, youre a single mom with two kids
be happy being a medical coder or a CNA
be realistic, you cannot handle the demanding jobs in finance, engineering tech, or math
be realistic
you make bad choices, are a whore, and cannot handle demanding coursework
please dont waste your time
theres a server job somewhere for you where you can make 70k and that's the best your life can achieve

Auditing doesn't pay much because 90% do it for 2 or 3 years out of school and then become a staff accountant somewhere.

Or you can specialize, even doing oral and maxillofacial surgery if you want, which was rated the best surgical subspecialty by every site I looked at.
Medical doctors, well, after medical school they have a MINIMUM 3 year residency before they can independently practice. During that residency, they're working 80 hours a week making $50k a year. Then, after residency is over, they work an average of 60 hours a week, nearly double what the average dentist works. Only to not earn that much more excluding a few extremely competitive specialties. In fact, the average dentist makes more per hour than the average doctor.
Dentistry was rated the number one profession in the world by US News in 2016 for a reason.
And yea, if you're purely focused on finances, I'd agree that computer science and software development are better. Cause that's four fewer years of school compared to dentistry, and a couple hundred grand less debt. I should know, my B.S. is in CS, but I decided to go to dental school because software development bored me.
I still stand with my original answer, dentistry or comp sci or engineering of some kind. You're gonna do fine financially in all of them. Depends on what you want in terms of actual work responsibilities and work/life balance.

2. Most residents, outside of some certain specialties, aren’t working 80 hours per week. I averaged around 55 through most of my residency.
3. Most physicians don’t work 60 hours a week. I would guess the average is closer to 50, with wide variance depending on the specialty and work setting. I just checked my schedule for last week. I saw patients for 20 hours. Week prior, 16 hours. This is at my primary job that pays a pretty good amount. I feel bad being so lazy, so I have a couple other very part-time income streams. Still definitely work less than 32 hours a week.
4. A 3 year head start is nice, but it doesn’t last long when you’re only making $130k. I made over $300k my first year out of residency doing easy, lazy work and will make over $450k this year.
5. Working in people’s mouths all day is gross.
