One of these ladies went to the doctor right before the trip, her health was noted as excellent and she died on the trip. A friend on the trip said she drank very moderately on the trip until she got sick..

I've been there about 8 times and never had a problem, is it the safest place in the world probably not but when you go off without a guide and or host trouble is bound to find you just like anywhere else.

Spent last week in a country with same GDP per capita as Dominican Republic. You should be aware that people can be more desperate for cash and lower their ethics to get it, sketchy stuff is more likely to happen, and if chit hits the fan investigation is likely to be sub par, and corruption is not uncommon
