If it's a retail job who cares.

If you're looking for a lot of money with no skills get into sales. If you're not autistic and at least a 6/10 you can make a killing selling real estate or cars or anything else.

Quick update. Got a construction gig and start tomorrow night. Thank you to the one that suggested Craigslist, thats where i got the job from. Had some money saved up so I'm not even in a bad spot, matter of fact I went foot-golfing tonight and had a blast (9 hole golf with a soccer ball). Thank you everyone soo much, I'd nominate this thread for a sticky; surely I'm not the only one who's but a high school grad with little job skills that needed advise. Thanks once again.

@3basic5me (srry on mobile and don't feel like typing [QUOTE]). Resetting and merchandising. I've done this on a smaller scale at my old job but I've never had to use tools before. Essentially building displays and shelves for a home improvement store (think Ace Hardware, Hope Depot, etc.).

I dont see why a tradie would hire an apprentice who is unionised.

You're young. If you don't want to go to school get into a trade apprenticeship. In 5 years you'll be making great money. Electrical, hvac, plumbing.

Damn that sucks to hear man but that's life. Chit doesn't always go your way and it takes something like this to drill that into your mindset. I'm sure you're capable of finding another job that's suited to what you're qualified for and then you can keep moving from there. Just seek out the opportunities as they present themselves and do what you can. It's their loss if you know you were an asset to the company mate, don't pay it any mind.

Two suggestions:
Consider night work. Not a lot of people work nights so not as much competition. Pay is usually pretty decent AND you can go to school, which leads to the next suggestion...

Check out your local community colleges. There are usually tons of job certifications offered through them. Trades, medical, dental, fire, police. Tons of forever jobs to choose from.

Types of places to look for work that don't take a lot of experience-warehousing, factory, construction. If you pick warehouse, look up food companies, beer companies, grocer warehouses, etc. Any snack, drink, or thing you see on a shelf landed in a warehouse at some time. The industries I mention pay pretty well. Avoid Walmart, Target, or any of the parcel companies. They either pay chit wages, put you on part time first, or have other issues.

My story, I'm making $27 an hour picking cases at a beverage company warehouse. I go to school days for HVAC/Refrigeration, and am going to transition into either servicing the machines this company has, or get out and find a job with even better pay specializing in refrigeration. Certs are quick to come, but a degree holds value for larger (better paying) corporations. Bonus-side jobs.

Good luck OP!

ETA-
Trades to check out:
HVAC/Refrigeration
Plumbing
Masonry
Electrical

Within these is a variety of specializing jobs as well. You don't have to go to school for many of these, however it doesn't hurt to and can lead you onto higher positions later. Not every trade job is union, there are pros and cons here on both sides. Union more protections, money, bennies, non-union has more flexibility and is easier to get into. Also non-union will often pay more the more you know or deeper you go into your specialization, whereas union has a set track that you follow, pay is determined on what level apprentice you are until you get to journeyman status. Here where I'm at you can be paid above the wage scale however don't count on that.

For your Union local chapters, google the trade, union, and your area. Example-Electrical Union Chicago Illinois. Another way is to find the big union covering the trade. IBEW covers electrical workers, go to their website and they should list the local union chapter somewhere near you.
Virtue is its own reward.

I'm not even mad. Job security is a figment of our imaginations anyhow. Thanks for the considerate words.

My past three jobs including the one I just got, is overnight. And with a tradies' wage and not eating junk food/expensive protein snacks, I should actually be able to save for a local school degreeThis is a very elaborate response. Much appreciated.

Learn how to operate heavy machinery specifically excavators. You can work in Alaska on gold mines, or pretty much anywhere on earth. In Australia you can make a ton if you own an excavator business $1000-3000 a day bascially doing earthworks for residential.

I'm actually irritated now. My current boss, great guy and didnt do anything wrong by doing this, says "oh, the project manager has postponed the project; go find some side work Sam" after only working for one month. This is told to me three weeks after my most recent paycheck. This occured last month. Since then, I dipped into pretty much all my savings and have no money.

I've turned in 22 applications so far, walked door-to-door, had three interviews, and made 5 phone conversations with store managers in the past week alone. I understand that almost no one wants to hire an apprentice level tradie, and that these applications don't turnover overnight.

Misc, do you have any further advice to offer? Kinda hard to feel like a man/responsible adult when you aren't making or saving any money. I've been without a paycheck for two months, this is scaring me.

Temp agency office work is the answer to your woes. With a little bit of luck, you might land an actual position.

Learn Microsoft Excel. It's not very hard to get the basics. SUMIF, SUMIFS, VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, Index & Match, maybe some SUMPRODUCT. Concactenate text, manipulate dates, make PIVOT tables... you can easily do some low level office work in a way that is impressive to people who don't know technology. Small family operations etc.

Or, if that isn't your speed, maybe try to land something in sales. Sales allows some types of people to earn well beyond their potential in other spheres. Last thing in the world I'd want to do, but some car salesmen do pretty good.

Step 1: apply for unemployment
Step 2: ????
Step 3: profit

But srsly. From what you stated, you could be able to draw unemployment. That will help tide you over while you search for new job. But make sure you look. Unemployment is thin.

Look into the trades. Look up unions and see when their apprenticeships start. You’ll make good money in a few years.

Try getting a warehouse job like at amazon. For all the sh*t people talk about amazon jobs the warehouse in my area is starting at 15 per hour and jumps to 18 in a few months. They also have health insurance/dental/vision from day one.

There is another warehouse place near where I live that a friend of mine got on at a couple years ago and he started at 18 and after three months jumped to 21. Then he moved into security and now makes 23 just to sit in a chair and watch monitors to make sure people don't steal sh*t. Not bad for not having a degree. Hell I know tons of people with 4 year psych or social work degrees that don't even make that money and he has the opportunity for overtime.

Big key is try to get on directly and not through work force or some other job placement company. The guy that works at the second warehouse tells me that they hire directly and also through workforce. If you get hired directly its 18 an hour. If you go through workforce its 12 per hour for the first 6 months. So big difference.

Any advise or insights on the written above misc? Essentially what I can do is any entry-level position since I'm a high school grad. Have cashier, shelf stocking, and labor experience. I have no real preference for any particular job, don't even mind working at a Walmart as long as the store itself is not tilted with inner-store politics, butI want nothing to do with moneyor medicine. Never thought of sales. Every time I talked to my grandfather or mother about this, they'd tell me "civil service Sam, or some sort of trade. You're a laborman, a worker.". I did take some beginner lessons for Excel and LibreOffice Calc, so I might continue that while I'm not actually applying anywhere.

Like when you apply somewhere, you're usually welcome to call and speak with whoever the hiring manager is, usually the store manager at most places.

But srsly. From what you stated, you could be able to draw unemployment. That will help tide you over while you search for new job. But make sure you look. Unemployment is thin.
I've too much pride to consider this as an option, but it might come to that.

I'm applying there too. So far, I've applied to any full-time and temp/contract skilled trad, general labor, and civil service in the area that I'm qualified for. I'll go to waste management next, then I'll try the supermarkets and fast food joints. I'm not better than anything but I'd figure I'd try the skilled trades and the labor places first, since that really is what I excel at.

Nothing posted in my tri-county region at the moment, but I'll keep checking. Fine suggestion here.

Regardless, don't take it personally. Companies do that stuff all the time, it's part of the game. You just keep applying, cold calling and networking in the direction you want to go. Keep a fresh suit and tie ready for interviews and keep rehearsing interview questions that you know will come up. Learn to sell yourself. No question in the interview is too tough, you got this.

Also in the meantime, start a side hustle. Online business. Neighborhood service. Whatever it is you can offer to people as a product or service. You may end up full time running a biz. But again, just keep hustlin' you'll be fine.
Preach it.

Quick question. I was considering the Police department, but my mom and grandpa were like "Do you wanna get shot?". I'm not sure but I figure I;d get a second opinion from someone that's not family.

Bad news Timmy, there's gonna be politics anywhere you go.
The billionaire and the beggar both have 24 hours in a day.

That's why grandma's apple pie rocks and yours sucks.
