Why Bill Gates Spends One Week A Year Just Reading

“In my whole life, I have known no wise people (over a broad subject matter area) who didn't read all the time -- none, zero. You'd be amazed at how much Warren reads--and at how much I read. My children laugh at me. They think I'm a book with a couple of legs sticking out.”― Charles T. Munger

https://www.inc.com/peter-economy/wh...n-success.html

It is even said that he read the entirety of the Encyclopedia Britannica at age 9, and would read science fiction novels for more than 10 hours a day.

Imagine where we’d be if his lazy ass was in the lab working instead of reading the encyclopedia

There's so much clickbait bull**** about what the extremely successful do.

Here's the real formula: 70% pure luck, 20% natural born talent which could also be considered luck, 10% obsessively grinding on one thing, not being "well rounded" and "well read".

Average millionaire only puts in an hour of self improvement. Average billionaire makes their first million at age 36, assuming they start at age 20, that's 6000 hours of work. Why can't people do an hour of self improvement? Why can't they do 6000 hours of learning? You do double that at school.

Luck isn't a thing, this is just cope from losers, the Kybalion got it right 2000 years ago, there is no luck, it's cause and effect.

Shout out to reading but that's kind of presented in a sensationalist manner. "Spends a week of each year reading" sounds much more impressive than "Bill Gates reads 27.6 minutes a day/aka he reads while he chits"

Most people I've heard talk about reading and suggest different books say they've read most of them multiples times. I ****ing hate doing the same thing more than once feels depressing thinking about having to read a book multiple times.

Clickbait comment is true.

There's another funny meme like this going around that says "Here's Oprah's top 5 tips on how to be stress free" and someone comments mockingly: #1. have a billion dollars.

If you believe Bill Gates, during some of the biggest acquisitions, developments or releases in Microsoft's history, stopped what he was doing middle of the way through those processes and said "I'm going to stop all this and read books for a week", you're a fuccking mo.

Strong attention span of piss, the video is 2 fukken minutes long.

"For decades, Gates has been embarking on biannual seven-day retreats to an isolated two-story cabin in the Pacific Northwest. While there, he disconnects from all technology and cuts himself off from all family, friends and staff, save for a caretaker who provides him two simple daily meals and keeps him stocked with Diet Orange Crush sodas. While in this cocoon of solitude, he reads newspaper articles, books, industry news and Microsoft reports. He also jots down responses to what he’s read and engages in active pondering, letting new ideas flood into the quiet space he’s cleared for them."

If you dedicate your entire life to running the 100 meter race, I doubt you'll break 11 seconds. Meanwhile Usain Bolt runs low 9, is it because he was genetically more lucky or because he works that much harder than you?

That's not what anyone has suggested.

Where does new knowledge come from? Everyone in your domain is reading the same things and talking to the same people.

The only way to stimulate innovation is from cross pollination from other fields.

A purely physical endeavor/=mental endeavor.

One doesn't need to replicate Bill Gates or Warren Buffet's wealth to achieve a good life.

Furthermore, you are not around motivated or top end people if you think they get to the top because of work. It's not work, they just put in an hour a day, the truth is that people are too ****ing lazy to do that even.

Bryant who was the hardest worker of all time in the NBA merely put in an average of 40 hours a week on his craft or 5+ hours a day and that is the number one spot in the number one league. Arnold trained 3-4 hours 6x a week, Warren Buffet reads 4+ hours daily, those are the best people of all time.

Again, in an intellectual field, the bar is lower, the methods are much more unexplored, potential is uncapped and methodologies have evolved so much, you can get what it took people a lifetime in a few hours.

I wonder what else that caretaker does.

Was never into books but forced myself as a new years resolution a two years ago. I really wish I started earlier and feel like I missed out on such a great pastime.

I'm reading the Stephen Kings Dark Tower series about 20-30 mins a night before bed and it's outstanding.

I've heard about that series.

11-22-63 by King is incredible IMO. I wasn't expecting to read a homage to 1950s and 1960s America, under the guise of a time travel novel. The lead character honestly felt like a real person to me.

1923 by King stuck with me for a while, a harrowing short story about a father and son who murder their wife/mother.

This latter day Bill Gates nut hugging is absurd. He was a morally bankrupt businessman. That said, the idea of unplugging for a week or so on the regular is good advice. We have a thing not too far from here called a national radio quiet zone where you can camp or visit for exactly that purpose. Kind of neat
