Rise of Skywalker was a sloppy pile of fan service, whereas at least Last Jedi was a cohesive well-made film. My problem with Last Jedi was what they did to everything set up in Force Awakens and how it threw everything into chaos and tried to kill the Star Wars lore, but it was still a cohesive quality movie.
Last Skywalker thoughts:
-Whatever "romance" the trilogy was trying to set up was a complete chit show. What was the thing Finn wanted to say to Rey when they thought they were drowning/dying? What happened after Rose kissed Finn at the end of Last Jedi? Where did the Rey/Kylo kiss come from, was that a romance being set up or more of a brother/sister force bond? They set up several story lines that went nowhere.
-The lineage thing, seems out of nowhere and in desperation after Last Jedi established her parents were "nobody."
-"Rise of Skywalker" - the title/idea that Rey is a Skywalker...sooo...all the actual Skywalkers are dead (Luke, Leia, Ben) and Rey (Palpatine's granddaughter) takes over the lineage? This isn't the rise of Skywalker, it's the death of all Skywalkers lol.
-I was really hopeful for this film as I loved Force Awakens and we got JJ back...but he seemed more concerned with fan service and checking things off his "Star Wars" list that he forgot to make a clean, cohesive movie. There was no "magic" in this film, nothing that gave me chills. It was sloppy, messy, full of holes, and threw everything but the kitchen sink at us in hopes of covering everything, and in doing so, accomplished little.

That Finn is force sensitive.
What happened after Rose kissed Finn at the end of Last Jedi?
The Resistance escaped while Luke's ghost dealt with Kylo.
Where did the Rey/Kylo kiss come from, was that a romance being set up or more of a brother/sister force bond?
Reylo has had so much sexual tension since The Last Jedi one could easily cut it with a butter knife. One has to be autistic to not see it.
They set up several story lines that went nowhere.
Agreed. Darn JJ and his mystery boxes

"The flowers bloom, then wither... The stars shine and one day become extinct. This earth, the sun, the galaxies and even the big universe, someday will be destroyed. Compared with that, the human life is only a blink, just a little time. In that short time - people are born, laugh, cry, fight, are injured, feel joy, sadness, hate someone, love someone. All in just a moment. And then, are embraced by the eternal sleep called death."

Another bit of gold from RLM:

Real talk: James Earl Jones cemented Darth Vader into history, and had it not been for him, the character would have gone down as ajoke.
For comparison's sake, here'sSpace Balls.
Now, between the latest movie and plain, ol' Disney being Disney, they saw through with that regardless:
Spoiler!

Thing about Marvel/DC is that even they know some comic book plotlines and content won't adapt to the big screen. I've pointed out how there's a version of Hulk who can rip dimensions or some chit. Completely ridiculous and something that should never leave an $8.99 comic book. Star Wars started doing this crap where characters were many times more powerful than you saw on the show, and just about every plotline/force power you can think of was written about.
That's why KOTOR is so solid. It wasn't born out of need to make something novel with characters we've known for 40 years. No need to make Leia a jedi or Luke a bounty hunter or whatever.
The other thing with KOTOR is that it is aware that we're talking agalaxyfar, far away - not the interstellar equivalent of the bar from Cheers where everyone is at most five degrees separated from one another. It is an example of a spin-off series that shows how if [x] world/universe is supposedly so unique, then you should be able to create entirely new stories branching away from what has already been told.
For the flaws of the older movies, they told their story - let it rest rather than wheel out the Mickey Mouse bulldozer to desecrate the remains for the sake of exploiting every last person involved with them who could put asses in seats.
When it comes to Disney's moviesnone of themcan stand on their own merits because they're either constantly calling back to the previous movies, or directly related (Death Star plans and shoehorning all of Han Solo's history into a single flick).
On the subject of comics, one of the many Star Wars things I didn't know is that Disney has been giving it a rather extensive comic book treatment throughMarvel.
Now full disclosure - I have never been a fan of "the force" or the whole jedi/sith business when it comes to Star Wars, but the power creep has been unreal for strictly the movies before we even get into the comic bullf*ckery. I like swords, ancient/medieval history, fantasy, and all that, but once guns enter the picture in space... the context doesn't really fit sword usage, so there is a lot of fallback to "the force."

Nevertheless, I'd say the OT is still the most level and reasonable display that allows you to suspend disbelief because the force isn't used as a constant crutch, while the swordplay is not overdone to the extent shown in the latter movies.
OT:
- A New Hope had old Ben and Vader using more measured, slow attacks (as leoslayer1 noted, like Kendo), although much of this is due to how they had to animate the lightsabers.
- Deflecting shots was not something you could just pick up on a whim, and as a result, anyone grabbing a lightsaber was f*cking stupid (e.g. Finn, the Stormtroopers carrying around melee weapons when they hadguns) because all someone has to do is kneecap a novice.
- Empire and Return greatly improved things through the use of improved means of animating the lightsabers, but the fights were overall grounded.
- Yoda struggled to lift an X-wing out of a swamp and Luke later did a big flip + lightsaber pull.
- Palps does some force lightning, but that's about the extent of crazy powers.
Prequels:
- The Prequels went with flashier, unnecessary choreography, but outside of the nothing that I can remember being more dramatic than the lightning. All things considered, if this wastheheight of the jedi, what with the training program and all that, you could at least surmise that there was enough shared knowledge and said training to allow for all of the extra flipping about.
- Maul has that double sided lightsaber because it looked cool. At least that fight soundtrack was good.
- Upon reflection, the one thing that kind of makes up a little bit for all the flipping about is how Anakin gets his limbs cut off for trying to flip over Obi-wan. Arguably the last time Star Wars does anything remotely grounded.
I don't know much about Star Wars, but I do know that numerous, real life incidents like the razing of the Library of Alexandria resulted in massive gaps in human knowledge, so the samecouldexplain the limited range in the originals vs prequels.
So, nobody is reallyaroundafter Return of the Jedi other than Luke, who at that point would have to teach himself everything else. Yet out of nowhere...
Disney:
- Rey... woah boy.Reycan doeverythingimaginable, down to Jedi mind tricking Daniel Craig because she is a strong, independent woman who don't need no men...tor. I mean, that right there: She hasno training.
- Kyle can stop projectiles without even focusing on it (this was before he took off his helmet and we find out he's basically JT from Grandma's Boy)
- He also needs that silly tri-saber... thing. Seriously, probably a really awful idea having useless lightsaber bits shooting out right next to your hand while wearing loose clothing.
- The Last Jedi... I'd have to re-watch Red Letter Media's coverage because there's no f*ckin' way I'd watch this 2girls1cup but with Rian Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy dreck. Off the top of my head, Rey can disappear a dagger that should stab her in the back.
- Rise ofthe Machinesof Cobraof the Planet of the Apesof TajSkywalker lets her defy death, heal like space Jesus, fling lightning, fly, transport matter (?!?), and who knows what else. Girl can probably will herself pregnant and give birth to a bunch of "Skywalkers" for episodes 10-12 since the Force is Female, after all.
What's particularly funny is how JJ inadvertently made the entirety of Star Wars pointless: If Rey could doall of this, with a substantial amount without any training whatsoever, then why didn't Luke just tap into his space eugenics and easy-mode through the OT?
*Edit - Appropriate RLM quote, "It's stupid, but we're talking aboutStar Wars."
It reminds me alot of anime. Just macguffins and deus ex machina galore.
Making rules up on the fly to get characters out of bad situations
Indeed, and cap it off with lame cliffhangers and asinine twists like, "Rey's parents are no one!"
Except -nooooo!- she'sreallyrelated to Grandpalpatine!
Further proving JJ is a rubbish writer, his reasoning comes down to his reveal being that Rian Johnson's "nobody" revealwasn't devastating enough. So, to use that article's comparison, the best JJ could think up was, "You know what's worse than having nobodies for parents? What if Rey's grandad wasspace-Hitler?"
Between those two morons, it's like they couldn't decide whether or not to go with those midichlorians and genetics for how the force works. Critics wholovedhow RJ decided that the force should be for every special snowflake, which in and of itself is another step towards turning Star Wars into another Superhero saga, are now pissed at JJ for re-rolling Rey's family tree. Meanwhile, everyone else with a functioning brain hates JJ and Rise, too.
Speaking of macguffins, apparently for a good portion of this movie is just chasing after them like a video game, so yeah, they even nailed that one. It's something especially egregious given how that specific setup is such a well known hallmark ofbadwriting, but that was thebestJJ et all could come up with? You'd think they were directlycitingTVTropes instead of trying to avoid falling into the most basic trappings of rubbish storytelling.

What viewer is going to think THAT is what he wanted to tell her? What was the thing Finn wanted to say to Rey when they thought they were drowning/dying?
That Finn is force sensitive.
What happened after Rose kissed Finn at the end of Last Jedi?
The Resistance escaped while Luke's ghost dealt with Kylo.
Where did the Rey/Kylo kiss come from, was that a romance being set up or more of a brother/sister force bond?
Reylo has had so much sexual tension since The Last Jedi one could easily cut it with a butter knife. One has to be autistic to not see it.
They set up several story lines that went nowhere.
Agreed. Darn JJ and his mystery boxes

And that is a literal and unsatisfactory answer to the Rose/Finn kiss...
I guess the Kylo/Rey thing is up to interpretation...but to me it felt a bit forced...pun intended.
And yes - JJ is known for setting up questions that never get answered...LOST, anyone?

Semi die-hard fan here. Have watched all the movies, animated series, read some comics, and watched tons of fan theory videos on YT.
Finally saw it today. It wasn't a Scorsese or Nolan masterpiece, but for a Disney Star Wars movie it was really good. Yeah there were some silly parts about it (like transporting matter using the force), but overall it had good tension, good character motivations, and finally we had some internal character struggle for Kylo and Rey. It could've been so much better if the abortion of Ep8 had never happened, but there was too much to do and wrap up to make a much better movie than this one. Overall, considering the low expectations I had going in, it was a really enjoyable and entertaining movie.

While I didn't love Last Jedi, this approach made this feel like a standalone movie, like JJ was trying to cram 2 movies into 1, and really messes with the flow of the whole trilogy. Each movie is decent by itself, but when you hold all 3 together, it's a jumbled mess.

fooking epic! the music, choreography and planet... HNGGGHhh rey and kylo move like snails/sloth compared to these guys. You can tell the actors for the new star wars don't work out or train sword fighting like hayden and gregor did. The actor that plays rey probably didn't lift no weights or do cardio at all, that's why all the fights she does is off que and slow.
Sad that we didn't get any new epic light saber battles, everyone watches the new fights to say how bull sht and slow it is and how rey should have lost each duel with how she was fighting. They did the rey character no service in light saber dueling ... my best guess is the actor refused to get fit for the role to perform, cause I have seen many females be able to do perform in combat choregraphy. Throne room scene is a clear indication that rey just physically did not train or commit to the role. Missing que's that they just edit things out rather than re shoot cause she can't keep up. Pulled a brie larson.
I just want to share the knowledge I have obtained throughout my life and hopefully change someone's life.

Never been so confused in my life, I genuinely don’t know if I watched the same film as most people in here.
It was amazingly good, like, probably the best Star Wars out of the entire 6 more recent ones. Didn’t see a single flaw in the entire film, and was very very good from start to finish. And trust me, I have stupidly high standards for films. And I didn’t think the previous 2 Disney films were very good, it felt like they were fillers leading up to this one.

Remember the guy that gave up? Neither does anybody else.

The choreography could have been better though

Now that Lucas no longer owns Star Wars, and the Jews who bought the rights have turned Star Wars into worthless trash that all the fans hate. I loved Star Wars, and watched it all the time growing up, like a lot of people. Now it's just trash. Surprised anyone on the Misc is still invested at this point.
