So You Want to Buy a Handgun

Going to give some general guidance, then get into some specific models.

First and foremost, recognize that a pistol is not a magical talisman. It does not "keep you safe". It is a tool for firing bullets, and nothing more. A handgun that you practice with can be used to save your life, and its usefulness is a function of how competent and familiar you are with its use. If you buy a handgun, invest in a quality holster, ammo, and training. The recommendations of this thread are not exhaustive, but they do cover reliable options in each category.

There’s a lot that can go into purchasing a handgun, which basically comes down to a sliding scale of concealability vs capacity/ease of use. Smaller handguns will be easier to hide on your person for concealed carry, but will be more difficult to shoot, and will have a reduced magazine capacity as a result of their smaller size. Larger handguns will have a longer sight radius (distance between front and rear sight) which makes them easier to aim accurately. They will also have a greater capacity (unless you live in a garbage state) which gives you more chances to make a hit on a vital area.

Before getting into some different handgun options that are out there, it’s important to cover storage. Owning a handgun for self-defense is pretty pointless if you can’t access it, but you also don’t want unintended persons to get access to your pistol. Storage, along with holsters and ammunition, will be covered in post 2.

All of the below handguns will be 9mm. Modern expanding hollowpoint ammunition has largely eliminated the advantages of larger cartridges, and the general, widespread availability of inexpensive 9mm target ammo makes it significantly easier to become proficient with.

Fullsize Handguns
These are also commonly referred to as “Duty Pistols”. These handguns will be heavier, larger, and have a higher magazine capacity. They are difficult to carry concealed in most clothing, but make for a good nightstand gun, or a fun range pistol.

Midsize/Compact
These are going to be slightly smaller than a fullsize, making them easier to conceal. They will still have a larger capacity (13+1 or 15+1 is common), and are generally still very easy to shoot.

If it's for concealed carry, the venerable snub nose "J-frame" or similar would be the call. For strictly .38spl there are a lot of S&W 642 and 442 out there, can't go wrong. Also Ruger LCR (light compact revolver) which can even be had in 9mm (yeah really)

An SP101 is kind of a middle ground but to me shoots more like the little j-frame (which is to say, it's not the best to shoot) and is not too hard to conceal.

For a home or woods or car or cold weather clothing concealment gun, a 4" Ruger GP100 or S&W 686.

If you are unsure of caliber it pretty much has to be a .357 mag (can shoot .38slp) or a .38spl, or a 9mm (rare, but there is the LCR I mentioned above). JMO

I've shot all sorts of pistols and glocks were always my number one for many reasons. I have to say though after shooting my buddies CZ .45 I was blown away, if I decide to pick up another pistol its most likely gonna be CZ. From 25 yards out I immediately hit the target my first shot and kept consistently shooting all the way through till mag was empty. Gun is very ergonomic, smooth feeling to it while shooting and the overall quality is there, even going from a .40 cal glock to a .45 CZ I didn't notice much of a difference in recoil. Love that gun.

.45 isn’t as recoil intensive as people think it is. Slow burn, slow push. Just feels different than a 9 or 40. CZ is among the best of the best.

Not at all. Suggesting training isn't an assumption of skill, or your familiarity with firearms. I generally recommend investing time and money into training ahead of arbitrary gun collecting. I'm not into revolvers, but Farley appears to have covered that for you.

No sweat.

Wife and I went to a training event in September, I went to a rifle training in November, and we're going to two more in Spring/Summer this year.

Shooting 1000 yds was fun, but some 9mm handgun instruction (advanced or otherwise) is going to be more practical and significantly less expensive.
