So You Want to Buy a Handgun

Going to give some general guidance, then get into some specific models.

First and foremost, recognize that a pistol is not a magical talisman. It does not "keep you safe". It is a tool for firing bullets, and nothing more. A handgun that you practice with can be used to save your life, and its usefulness is a function of how competent and familiar you are with its use. If you buy a handgun, invest in a quality holster, ammo, and training. The recommendations of this thread are not exhaustive, but they do cover reliable options in each category.

There’s a lot that can go into purchasing a handgun, which basically comes down to a sliding scale of concealability vs capacity/ease of use. Smaller handguns will be easier to hide on your person for concealed carry, but will be more difficult to shoot, and will have a reduced magazine capacity as a result of their smaller size. Larger handguns will have a longer sight radius (distance between front and rear sight) which makes them easier to aim accurately. They will also have a greater capacity (unless you live in a garbage state) which gives you more chances to make a hit on a vital area.

Before getting into some different handgun options that are out there, it’s important to cover storage. Owning a handgun for self-defense is pretty pointless if you can’t access it, but you also don’t want unintended persons to get access to your pistol. Storage, along with holsters and ammunition, will be covered in post 2.

All of the below handguns will be 9mm. Modern expanding hollowpoint ammunition has largely eliminated the advantages of larger cartridges, and the general, widespread availability of inexpensive 9mm target ammo makes it significantly easier to become proficient with.

Fullsize Handguns
These are also commonly referred to as “Duty Pistols”. These handguns will be heavier, larger, and have a higher magazine capacity. They are difficult to carry concealed in most clothing, but make for a good nightstand gun, or a fun range pistol.

CZ P10 F: Buy $431.15;https://www.gunsmidwest.com/cz-p-10f...-blk-19rd.html
FN 509: Buy $399;https://gunprime.com/products/fn-fn5...3267-851574683
Glock G17 Gen 5 : Buy $539;https://lockedloaded.com/product/glo...rip-black-ndlc
Walther PPQ M2 : Buy $439.99;https://www.cdnnsports.com/walther-p...t#.XhKmVEdKhPb

Smith & Wesson M&P 9 2.0 : Buy $434.86;https://gunprime.com/products/smith-...-rd-mags-3-dot
Sig Sauer P320 : Buy $379.99;https://www.interstateguns.com/firea...ud320f9b1.html

Midsize/Compact
These are going to be slightly smaller than a fullsize, making them easier to conceal. They will still have a larger capacity (13+1 or 15+1 is common), and are generally still very easy to shoot.

CZ P10C: Buy $429;https://www.sportsmansguide.com/prod...9705510a240612
FN 509 Midsize: Buy $389;https://gunprime.com/products/fn-ame...9mm-66-100463/

Sig P320 Compact: Buy $456.99;https://grabagun.com/sig-320c9b-320-...r-blk-15r.html

Subcompact
These make significant sacrifices in size to achieve greater concealability. They are still double stack pistols, and can accept extended magazines for a fuller grip.

Walther PPQ M2 SC: Buy $399;https://www.cheaperthandirt.com/walt...N-2815250.html
Glock G26 Gen5: Buy $539;https://lockedloaded.com/product-sea...text=G26+Gen+5
HK VP9 SK: Buy $510.23;https://dahlonegaarmory.com/product/...rap-grip-black

Single Stack 9mm
These are significantly easier to conceal than the above options, but significant sacrifices in mechanical accuracy and ease of shooting have been made to achieve this. They're also much lower in capacity.

Walther PPS M2 9MM: Buy $289.99;https://www.gunbuyer.com/walther-pps...805961-gb.html
M&P Shield 9mm: Buy $258.99;https://www.mrgundealer.com/shop/smi...88864151-22300
Glock 43: Buy $399.99;https://peakfirearms.com/firearms/ha.../glock-43.html

I have a Glock 19 but really want to throw a revolver into the mix. Unsure of caliber and model. Part of me really wants a Ruger SP101 or Taurus Magnum with a 4” or shorter barrel. Feedback?

If it's for concealed carry, the venerable snub nose "J-frame" or similar would be the call. For strictly .38spl there are a lot of S&W 642 and 442 out there, can't go wrong. Also Ruger LCR (light compact revolver) which can even be had in 9mm (yeah really)

An SP101 is kind of a middle ground but to me shoots more like the little j-frame (which is to say, it's not the best to shoot) and is not too hard to conceal.

For a home or woods or car or cold weather clothing concealment gun, a 4" Ruger GP100 or S&W 686.

If you are unsure of caliber it pretty much has to be a .357 mag (can shoot .38slp) or a .38spl, or a 9mm (rare, but there is the LCR I mentioned above). JMO

Probably nothing. Incels have access to plenty of ways to kill themselves and others already.

Lockedloaded kind of sucks as far as their customer service and shipping time goes

Would recommend Sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore instead (free shipping on firearms and frequently no tax as well), or Grabagun using their grabaquote (have been quoted about $450 for a Gen4 G19,
$513.99 for a Gen5 G19)

I've shot all sorts of pistols and glocks were always my number one for many reasons. I have to say though after shooting my buddies CZ .45 I was blown away, if I decide to pick up another pistol its most likely gonna be CZ. From 25 yards out I immediately hit the target my first shot and kept consistently shooting all the way through till mag was empty. Gun is very ergonomic, smooth feeling to it while shooting and the overall quality is there, even going from a .40 cal glock to a .45 CZ I didn't notice much of a difference in recoil. Love that gun.

.45 isn’t as recoil intensive as people think it is. Slow burn, slow push. Just feels different than a 9 or 40. CZ is among the best of the best.

Not at all. Suggesting training isn't an assumption of skill, or your familiarity with firearms. I generally recommend investing time and money into training ahead of arbitrary gun collecting. I'm not into revolvers, but Farley appears to have covered that for you.

I'm waiting to be sure that Sig is producing units that have strikers that don't break at unpredictable round counts with no indication that it's happened before recommending that pistol.

tfw i can own a handgun in my country but it CANT be for self-defense against other humans...

imagine having a gun in your house and not being legally allowed to use it if an armed attacker breaks in.

That's probably the stupidest thing I've heard all day today...

Oh well, maybe you guys can have gun rights after your next election in 4 years.

.
Can you use a shotgun instead? Not a self defense shotgun, but like a bird hunting shotgun. Like an over/under or a semi auto with nice engraving and wood finish.

No sweat.

Wife and I went to a training event in September, I went to a rifle training in November, and we're going to two more in Spring/Summer this year.

Shooting 1000 yds was fun, but some 9mm handgun instruction (advanced or otherwise) is going to be more practical and significantly less expensive.

It's probably only legal for him to shoot himself with the handgun and then have it enter the criminal.
