Schools aren't closed.
Airlines/Travel industries will mostly go bankrupt (only the strongest will survive).

What concerns me the most is that there is no faith/hope in the Governments. Boris Johnsons advice was "dont panic, and wash your hands whilst singing happy birthday twice" - wtf?!

Nobody seems concerned about this at all, because most people are utter thickos who bury their heads in the sand.

Worst case = global recession with HUGE death rates (millions)
Best case = global recession with around 20-100K deaths imo.
Because the virus has been out for over 2 month now and we have only had 1 death which was a 70 year old woman who already was in and out of hospital with health issues even before catching the virus and then died with the virus.

I still believe this virus has been spreading across the globe since December. I do not believe Italy suddenly had 3998 new infections in two weeks. People have been infected, and they have just recently started testing and taking it seriously.

As I said before, you should remove the dangerous misinformation that young, healthy people are unlikely to contract this virus. Young, healthy people are unlikely to become sick enough to end up in the ICU and die, and people with no symptoms are unlikely to spread it, but itis absolutely falseto suggest that otherwise healthy people will not readily incubate the disease, go about their lives with mild symptoms, and spread it to others without realizing what they've done. That is what happened on the Nile cruise, and what has happened in many other cases.

You've also been given multiple links to research - and the CDC's own recommendations to health care workers - debunking the notion that face masks don't help protect healthy people. While I tend to agree that masks are overkill, it's still a provable falsehood, and, outrageously, a self-serving one being promulgated by the NIH which should not be dignified. Masks are so critical that Germany and South Korea have banned exports to preserve their stockpiles, and South Korea has implemented rationing.

More than that, I can't help but notice that you're now blaming "the MSM" in your OP, which is friggin' appalling. While I agree with you in principle, for a thread that is supposed to be about preventing conspiracy theories and disinformation, sewing distrust in the actual news is ridiculous. The WHO's position is that the world isn't moving urgently enough and that governments need to "pull out all the stops" to stop the spread.

But, the issue is it's too early to know how bad it is (or isn't) since people don't showing symptoms for ~3 weeks. I'd say in the next 3-4 weeks we'll truly have an idea of how bad (or not) it is in the US.

Thread needs more real life.

- The VAST majority of deaths are from 70+ year olds (the same god damn people who die the most form the yearly, seasonal flu)
- Although it's not know why, the virus has an EXTREMELY low infection rate for kids and babies. And the few that are infected generally have mild symptoms that they shrug off.
- No racist but Chinese people have **** for hygiene, and many eat **** that makes american's fast food diets seem like the healthiest thing ever. Assuming what US statistics from the virus might look like purely based on Chinese statistics is absolutely stupid.

Seriously unless you're already sick or are 65+ years old youmightbecome infected and get knocked on your ass for a week or two, then you'll go on with your god damn life.

I've said this before, but it seems like a lot of people see no grey area between "this is the end of the world" and "it's all media hype".

The seasonal flu hits nursing homes every year. It doesn't usually kill 8 people in each one when it does. For some reason people aren't willing to grasp that containing it is important because it kills vulnerable people and requires costly supportive care in a very concentrated way where it hits.

This isn't media hype. The media isn't the source of hysterical people acting like it's the end of days. They're just pushing some basic, though uncomfortable, facts. Washing your hands is a must but people really should be thinking about social distancing and skipping crowded, unsanitary situations to do their part to minimize the spread. Places like airports where you're crossing paths with sneeze juices from people who just came back from Milan are places to be more conscientious than you would be otherwise and even avoid. This just might not be the time to take that cruise.

Some girl got the virus from a cruise ship, walked around the city for a week, then went into isolation... Alberta is 2-3 weeks out from our big outbreak

My only major worry about this is the mutated strains & what happens when it mutates into an even more deadly strain
Canada has 2.36 hospital beds per 1000 citizens, our healthcare system can't handle this

There is definitely something to be said for R0 being a function of the host community. But fatality rates have got to be pretty tightly correlated to the virus strain itself vs the host's nationality. Even taking potential difference for R0 into account, it seems like our country isn't taking it all that seriously, so I have my doubts the R0 will be significantly different here in the early stages than it was in China. The lack of testing being a primary issue as it provides a false sense of security/risk level.

ANumber1 has been bringing great content to the OG thread for some time now. Always appreciate their input. It's really unfortunate that we have become such a polarized society where everyone gets binned into some category. You can be on the spectrum. I think there are quite a few of us who lean towards "this virus will have serious impacts on life as we know it" and are speaking in terms of economic impact and the potential that we see some sort of travel restrictions put in place. This is frequently countered with "you have a 0.2% chance of dying" or "it only affects old cells stfu" as if the concepts of serious impact and variable fatality rates are mutually exclusive.

Came to post about this. He returned from a region of Italy with heavy outbreak, has had symptoms, and positive test. He is 'in isolation at home.'

The outbreak strain in Italy has been particularly deadly and so has the one in Washington state and now we've got both here in central NC. Hopefully neither has spread it to others but only time will tell.

On the coach journey to airport i was sat next to a pilot and started talking to him

He was flying to shanghai (air asia)...i asked him if he was going to wear a mask and he said "only if people coughing around me"

On my flight with airasia....none of the cabin crew were wearing masks or gloves

30% of people on flight were wearing masks

One more thing that everyone can do to lessen the spread - health care facilities, nursing homes, businesses/employers, patronized businesses like grocery/shopping/supplies, and individuals at home - is to keep it as warm as possible.

It's known through numerous research that coronaviruses can live a long time outside the body when its cold and dies outside the body much faster the warmer it is.
