Because panic sells. And it keeps the finance guys in business because now they will help you get the money lost from the stock market back. Ignoring the fact that their panic helped sparked the losses.

Here is how the CDC defines High Risk Individuals:
Older adults
People who have serious chronic medical conditions like:
Heart disease
Diabetes
Lung disease
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019...is-higher-risk

Here is the top section of what they recommend those people do:
Get Ready for COVID-19 Now
-Have supplies on hand
-Contact your healthcare provider to ask about obtaining extra necessary medications to have on hand in case there is an outbreak of COVID-19 in your community and you need to stay home for a prolonged period of time.
-If you cannot get extra medications, consider using mail-order for medications.
-Be sure you have over-the-counter medicines and medical supplies (tissues, etc.) to treat fever and other symptoms. Most people will be able to recover from COVID-19 at home.
-Have enough household items and groceries on hand so that you will be prepared to stay at home for a period of time.
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019...pplies-on-hand

Oh and for people who are wondering how the CDC defines "a period of time" they don't. But this is a quote from that same page.
If a COVID-19 outbreak happens in your community,it could last for a long time.(An outbreak is when a large number of people suddenly get sick.) Depending on how severe the outbreak is, public health officials may recommend community actions to reduce people’s risk of being exposed to COVID-19. These actions can slow the spread and reduce the impact of disease.

If a doctor asks for one, you are now legally eligible to get one. It neither mean that your facility can physically get a test kit nor that your state has capacity to perform the test any time soon.

If you're so completely ignorant of the basic facts of the testing dumpster fire that you have to ask the second question, it just reinforces my point that, like AlexNYC7, you're just choosing to live in denial that there's a serious problem by dismissing all reasonable discussion as irrational fear.

You mean like when the director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases publicly warned that Americans needed to expect it to prepare for it to get "bad" and that she had begun preparing her family for "severe disruptions to everyday life", or like when the Secretary of Health and Human Services called it an "an unprecedented, potentially severe health challenge globally"? That was weeks ago, before things had begun to deteriorate in Western countries.

There's this bizarre fantasy world out there where Trump is telling people everything is fine and that the media is just trying to scare everyone by accurately reporting the warnings coming out of Trump's own experts, then claiming that they'll just wait to listen to the experts.

Literally nobody who matters is saying anything like that, and it's dishonest to claim that they are. Our newly populist society is a pathetic haven for this kind of self-serving idiocy, just like the fools who haven't figured out their mediocre jobs have been obsolete for twenty years and are never coming back. Nobody is telling you to panic, but literally everything is pointing toward taking this seriously.

The new test kits sent out last week (literally 5 days ago) do work.

There is a big difference between the CDC changing their testing guidelines to allow for tests to be administered with doctors order vs having enough tests around for every doctor order.

Most states have enough materials (look up have PCR assays are done, you have blanks, controls, and standards all requiring different media to perform and validate the tests results), for 400-700 people right now.

That said, there are states with only enough equipment (the systems used to run the tests) in their state labs to run 10-15 a day. NYS is currently at capacity for their state labs, but they can’t use private labs bc that’s against current CDC guidelines.
They said she's gone too far this time

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah, don’t panic but let us report on the infections minute by minute. Doesn’t happen with any other thing.

Don’t panic but let’s cancel sporting event because one person 2 towns over is infected.

Nyc is going to go on lockdown soon. We all know it. But don’t panic at this overreaction.

It’s 100% panic.

If you don’t want panic, you don’t report on it and let it run it’s course like any other flu.

That’s all people are talking about.

Of course I personally aren’t. I’m the one that initially said live your life.

My date on Saturday wants to have it outside NYC because she doesn’t want to ride the subway. Yeah she is 100% panicked because her work wants everyone there to start working from home.

Bad laws always follow the mass panic.
Dude what? It isn't the end of us, nobody is saying that. Now it is going to destroy some markets as well as send us into a recession. If/when multiple states go on a lockdown the economy is going to be fukked. Add in the fact Russia is in a oil war with the ME and we are about to be super fukked. Tons of people are going to he laid off in the hospitality/ travel industry and many people are losing their ass on their 401k. This is super deadly to elderly people as well. This isn't about fear your going to die but it indeed is a time to be worried about the economy.

Just because governments responded terribly, doesn’t mean anything.

It just means governments are no good when it comes to healthcare or the economy.

We will recover from this like all the other times.

Bad government policy is worse than this flu.

The elderly are always in danger because they are elderly. That has never changed.

If I get to 80, I’ll be susceptible to things that I’m not at 45.

Heat kills the elderly too. Let’s ban summer or sunlight.

Flus and pneumonia kills the elderly too. We don’t panic for that, do we.

It’s amazing the number of fear mongers our there. The social media generation has to put panic and out fear mongers the next person.

Also, hoarders should have to pay more for toilet paper. These anti gouging laws are counterproductive.

Well lets be clear, first and foremost, being prepared does not mean having the worlds supply of TP in your basement. That is just absurd and not productive and no one is advocating for it.

But I think its important to look at the big picture. Right now CDC is only recommending these actions for this section of the populous, but the CDC recommendation isn't the only data point. All of Italy was just locked down, China has been all sorts of jacked up for weeks now, and its becoming apparent that a good portion of the US population is totally apathetic to this threat and probably still not washing their hands after taking a dump. So does it make sense to wait for the CDC to say "EVERYBODY LISTEN UP, NOW is the time to go buy some food and supplies?" To run out with everyone else and queue up and rub elbows to fight over that last bag of rice or that last pack of TP? Personally I'd rather be prepared and not be a part of that panic.

Fairly confident no one in this thread has said "prepare for the end" in this thread. Some people certainly prepare for less likely scenarios than others. But right now the idea of needing to have a few weeks of food and supplies on hand is not a "low probability event".

EDIT:
As far as I can tell, the "low risk population" is not just roses and sunshine. There are certainly reports of some people having very mild SYMPTOMS, but from what I've read, the definition of "Mild" in a clinical sense is more like "did not require hospitalization". You are not irrational for wanting to avoid an illness that is potentially a couple weeks or more of flu like symptoms, even if death is unlikely.
We are all gunna make it

Someone’s nana will eventually die of something else. Why does dying of this have more importance than dying of regular flu, or heart failure? I don’t get it.

It’s not that if this virus didn’t show up, nana will live forever.

People die everyday. Why is dying from corona any worse?

Literally dumbest fuking post ever. And that's coming from someone who absolutely hates the government meddling in things.
It's over 400 and they're experiencing a ~5% death rate. 5 out of every 100 people infected = dead. That's absolutely insane and if they can't put a stop to the spread one way or another, they're going to be in for an extremely bad situation - as if it isn't already bad enough.
Literally locking down the whole damn area is basically he only thing that finally stopped Chinese numbers from STILL going up at a scary rate.

The more local social media comments I read on these coronavirus stories from woodchucks who list themselves as "Self-Employed" and graduates of the "School of Hard Knocks", the less I care if they live or die. Semi-srs. If we can steer the infected into their hospitals and away from the normals, I'm on-board.
Nah, fukk that. I’m not doing that.

People die everyday. Why is dying from corona any worse?
Negged for being too damn dumb to even be participating in this thread.

I didn't realize how right I was when I called it out for being Supreme Gentleman thinking.

"Who cares if I help kill off a bunch of people too soon. I wanna go a ballgame today!"
Nah, fukk that. I’m not doing that.

I’m gonna post what I think, even if it’s unpopular.

I may die of this thing. Our tomorrow’s are not guaranteed. So live for today.

So i shouldn’t participate if I don’t want to take part in the pity party?

Works both ways. I want to go to the ballgame even if someone kills me. I’m consistent.

Also, if course if I get it I will stay home. Won’t knowingly infect others.

But If I don’t get it, I vehemently disagree that I should be told to stay gone or go under lockdown.

Any person that believes is freedom should as well. An able bodied Italian not being allowed to travel is a travesty of the highest degree.

Read some first hand accounts of being intubated in an ICU. It's a slow death drawn out over the course of a month while you lose the ability to breath on your own and end up drowning in your own fluids.
